This Florida standout is among The Athletic's best-ever college baseball players
A question that frequently comes up in any discussion about sports is, "Who was the best player you ever saw play the game?" It is a subjective question loaded with various biases, but it often produces some very interesting answers.
The Athletic's Mitch Light recently cobbled together the collective takes from five of his sports media colleagues in roundtable fashion, confronting them with the query offered above in regard to college baseball. Four of the representatives hailed from ESPN, while the fifth is a member of the D1Baseball publication.
Chris Burke of ESPN answered the question with a recent member of the Florida Gators baseball program: outfielder Wyatt Langford. In his mind — recency bias also considered — the now-member of the Texas Rangers was the best he had ever seen.
"I'm going to say Wyatt Langford," Burke begins. "I thought the two years (2022-23) he put together at Florida, … he was almost flawless in the outfield. He ran the bases as hard as anybody I ever covered, especially for a superstar. And you felt like he was going to hit an extra-base hit every at-bat. So I'll just go in the era that I've been covering the sport."
Langford's accolades in Gainesville were numerous, including a unanimous First Team All-American honor across five different publications in 2023, as well as being named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team and First Team All-SEC. His 2023 MLB draft selection at No. 4 was the second-highest ever for a UF alumnus behind Mike Zunino, who was selected third in 2012.
The outfielder's career slugging percentage stands at a program-record .746, topping Brad Wilkerson's 25-year record (.714) by a whopping .32 points, while finishing his collegiate career ranking top-10 all-time fielding percentage (tied-second), batting average (fifth), home runs (tied-sixth) and on-base percentage (seventh).

Spartans extend official offer to Pitt commit, 4-star RB prospect from Baltimore
Michigan State football has extended an official offer to a top 20 running back in the 2026 class. Damon Ferguson of Baltimore announced on Monday that he's received his official offer from the Spartans. Ferguson is verbally committed to Pitt, but was once strongly considering the Spartans before announcing his commitment to the Panthers in early June. August 1 was the first day for schools to extend official offers to prospects in the 2026 class. Ferguson is a four-star running back prospect, with a recruiting rating of 91.20 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 17 running back and No. 263 overall prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. Michigan State was previously prioritizing Ferguson but ultimately came up short in the recruiting battle with Pitt. This latest update of him receiving his official offer from the Spartans could suggest Michigan State is still pursuing him as a priority player, or it, of course, could simply be keeping the door open should he elect to reconsider his commitment to Pitt. Either way, this is a big-time player to keep an eye on as we lead up to signing day in December -- especially since Michigan State still has not landed a verbal commitment from a running back prospect in the 2026 class. Indian teen chess champions break records in back-to-back victories
[Source] At 10 years and 3 months old, Bodhana Sivanandan of England became the youngest player to earn a Woman Grandmaster norm after a landmark tournament performance in France on July 27. Just one day later, India's 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh became the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women's World Cup, earning the Grandmaster title and national honors. Sivanandan sets age record Competing at the Trophee Dole – Pasino Grand Aix in Aix-en-Provence, Sivanandan scored a 2401 performance rating by drawing a game against a Grandmaster and defeating multiple International Masters. The result secured her first Woman Grandmaster norm and a second norm toward the Woman International Master title. Sivanandan had previously dominated the World Under-8 Girls Championship in 2022 and made headlines in 2024 as the youngest player selected to represent England at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. Deshmukh makes history Trending on NextShark: In Batumi, Georgia, Deshmukh clinched victory over fellow Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy in the final of the FIDE Women's World Cup after two classical games ended in draws. Her victory automatically granted her the Grandmaster title and a place in the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament. Deshmukh, now India's 88th Grandmaster and the fourth Indian woman to hold the title, was honored with a cash prize of 30 million Indian rupees ($360,000). India's rising generation Sivanandan and Deshmukh are part of a broader wave of Indian talent reshaping the global chess scene. Grandmasters such as Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh Dommaraju and Nihal Sarin have all emerged as serious contenders on the world stage before age 20. Dommaraju, in particular, recently became the youngest player to compete for the World Chess Championship, while Praggnanandhaa has earned wins over multiple world champions. Trending on NextShark: 'Players like superstars' India's chess federation has played a central role in nurturing its young talents through organized training, national competitions and financial support. American Grandmaster Hans Niemann, responding to Deshmukh's win, praised India's approach and criticized the lack of support in the United States. He said India 'treats their players like superstars' with visible backing from both the federation and government, while American players often face institutional neglect. Niemann warned that India's deep investment in player development could shift the global balance of power in chess within a decade.
