Education expos crucial for enhancing nation's learning ecosystem, says S'wak deputy minister
SIBU (Aug 16): Education expos are an important platform in strengthening the nation's education ecosystem, said State Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
He said the programme provides a space for students and parents to explore the best learning opportunities.
'Through this approach, it has helped the younger generation develop their potential through various skills, including opportunities for further studies and future careers.
'Our young people greatly need support and encouragement from all parties to continue their education and step into the working world.
'The efforts of the District Education Office in organising such expos are very timely for us to provide support, guidance and advice to ensure they do not lose direction after completing secondary school,' he said.
He said this during the opening ceremony of the Sarawak Education Expo 2025 organised by the Sarikei District Education Office at Dewan Central Sarikei here today.
Len Talif said Sarawak showed great potential in new technologies, including hydrogen production and green energy, and these resources needed to be developed.
'To realise this goal, the expertise of Sarawak's younger generation must be nurtured to become catalysts for the government's plans. The Education Expo is suitable for achieving this aspiration for the future of our state and economy.
'Thus, we want Sarawak's youth to seize the opportunities and state government initiatives to further their studies at the seven state-owned universities and the Sarawak International Secondary School owned by Yayasan Sarawak,' Len said.
Also present at the event were Yayasan Sarawak representative Nurul Kartini Abdullah; Sarikei District Education officer Lau Ngie Tung; Sarikei Division Deputy Resident Badjuri Bidin; and Sarikei District Office representative Gerald Grino Apil. education expo Len Talif Sibu

Annual fishing safari hailed as ‘soul' of Tanjung Manis

TANJUNG MANIS (Aug 18): The Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari has become a hallmark community activity that reflects the identity of the area and continues to grow as an event of state significance. This was pointed out by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Len Talif Salleh at the closing of the 18th edition of the event yesterday. First organised by the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) in 2005, the event has since become the 'very soul of Tanjung Manis', according to the Kuala Rajang assemblyman. 'This fishing safari is more than just a sport. 'It showcases the strength of our ecosystem and sustainable environment, while serving as a bridge that unites communities, government agencies, the private sector and society through a shared passion,' said Len Talif in his speech. He added that such activities could catalyse comprehensive, balanced and sustainable community development, while also promoting Tanjung Manis as both an investment hub and an international eco-tourism destination. Offering total prizes worth RM60,000, this year's edition registered 146 participants competing in two categories: the deep sea class with 29 anglers, and the coastal shore class with 117 anglers. The participants were not only from the local villages in Belawai, Rajang, Jerijeh, Bandar Baru Tanjung Manis, Semalau, Stalun, Sebayang and Tusok, but also from Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, Limbang and Sibu. Adding on, Len Talif also reflected on Tanjung Manis' transformation since the early 1980s – from mangrove and 'nipah' (marsh palm) swamps, into a thriving industrial hub. He said that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, then Sarawak's first minister of industrial development in 1987, played a pivotal role in charting its development, followed by the establishment of the Tanjung Manis Timber Processing Zone in 1990 under then-chief minister, the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. 'Today, Tanjung Manis and the Rajang Delta are positioned for growth across multiple sectors including eco-tourism, shipping, aquaculture, rice, coconut, pineapple and mangrove-based carbon trading. 'Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, electricity and basic amenities have been prioritised to support this transformation,' he said. The establishment of the Rajang Delta Development Agency (Radda) in 2022, with RM1.5 billion funding, said Len Talif, further accelerated the development in central Sarawak through a bottom-up approach, encompassing Mukah, Sarikei and parts of Sibu. 'Under PCDS (Post Covid-19 Development Strategy) 2030, the region including Kapit, Sibu, Sarikei and Mukah, has also been designated as a strategic development hub aligned with green and sustainable economic growth.' Len Talif also emphasised the importance of sustainability in development, citing Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC)'s artificial reef projects in Sarawak waters, including off Kuala Rajang, Belawai, Pulau Bruit and Kabong, to preserve marine ecosystems and ensure sustainable fish supply. 'By preserving mangrove forests and promoting carbon trading, we are not only reducing emissions, but also strengthening marine biodiversity. 'This approach ensures that development brings economic benefits, while maintaining ecological balance for future generations,' he stressed. community lead Len Talif Tanjung Manis Fishing Safari

Lee (third left) and other guests participate in the officiation gimmick of the Sarawak Education Expo and Career Day. MIRI (Aug 16): Sarawak is rapidly moving towards becoming a developed state, with growth in emerging sectors such as the digital economy, renewable energy, and high-technology industries, said State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Speaking at the Sarawak Education Expo and Career Day here today, Lee emphasised that education plays a crucial role in preparing the younger generation for these changes. 'All of this requires human capital that is skilled, knowledgeable, and competitive at the global level. Education is the foundation for producing such talent,' he said. Lee noted that the expo provided students with opportunities to explore education pathways, learn about scholarships and financial assistance, and gain early exposure to skills needed in the future job market. He also thanked Yayasan Sarawak for sponsoring the event and for recognising the achievements of outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students from the 2024 cohort. 'This effort serves as an encouragement for students to continue striving for excellence in their examinations, with the hope of receiving similar recognition in the future,' he added. This year's expo brought together 288 students from schools across Miri, including recipients of the SPM and STPM Excellence Awards. 'To all students, do not miss this chance. Observe, listen, ask questions, and record the information you gain today,' Lee advised. He urged students to plan their futures with confidence and determination. 'Remember, success does not come by chance. It demands continuous effort, discipline, and perseverance,' he stressed. The event, supported by the Miri District Education Office, also featured participation from educational institutions, agencies, and industry players. Lee expressed hope that the programme would benefit all participants and inspire students to pursue their goals with commitment and resilience. digital economy high tech Lee Kim Shin renewable energy skills
