SETC luxury buses to ease long-distance rides

CHENNAI: Long-distance travellers bound for destinations like Nagercoil or Tirunelveli, or cities such as Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram in neighbouring states, will soon be able to travel with enhanced comfort at an affordable price in government-run luxury buses from brands like Volvo, Benz, and Eicher.
For the first time, the State Express Transport Corpoation (SETC) is set to introduce multi-axle luxury buses in its fleet. Till now, such high-end buses were predominantly operated by private omni bus services in Tamil Nadu.
Taking a cue from neighbouring states – where Karnataka offers 'Airavat Club Class' and Andhra Pradesh runs Volvo buses under names like 'Amaravathi', 'Garuda', and 'Garuda Plus' – Tamil Nadu is preparing to roll out a similar premium service.
Official sources from SETC said 20 air-conditioned (AC) multi-axle luxury buses from eligible brands will be purchased.
'Tenders have already been floated for the purchase of these multi-axle buses, which are expected to provide superior travel comfort compared to standard axle models,' said an official.
The initiative is aimed at attracting travellers willing to pay a slightly higher fare for enhanced comfort, especially those who typically opt for private buses due to limited train availability or time constraints. 'A section of travellers that can't get train tickets usually turns to private omni buses despite higher fares, preferring comfort and faster travel. This SETC initiative will provide them with a luxurious alternative for trips to places like Bengaluru and Nagercoil,' an official explained.
To meet the increasing demand during weekends and festival season, SETC has also decided to hire 20 AC private buses which are expected to be introduced from May-end, added the official.
SETC, which serves routes above 300 km, carried around 72,553 passengers a day during the 2024-25 period (up to February). The corporation operates 1,000 scheduled services across 195 routes – 90 interstate and 105 intrastate – using a fleet of 1,080 buses.
Additionally, SETC offers a 50% fare discount to frequent travellers. Those making more than five trips a month are eligible for the discount from their sixth trip onwards. Last year, a total of 4,376 travellers benefited from this concession.
Last week, the transport department issued tender notices for the procurement of 2,144 buses. This includes 110 non-AC sleeper-cum-seater buses and 10 AC seater buses for SETC.
The tenders cover 876 mofussil buses for six TNSTCs, 297 standard floor buses, and 260 ultra-low floor buses for MTC. Additionally, tenders for the purchase of 745 CNG-powered mofussil and town buses were floated on Wednesday. In total, tenders have been issued for 2,909 buses.

UK financial regulator partners with Nvidia in AI 'sandbox'

Financial firms in Britain will be able to test artificial intelligence tools later this year in a regulatory "sandbox" launched on Monday by the country's financial watchdog, part of a broader government strategy to support innovation and economic growth. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has partnered with U.S. chipmaker Nvidia to provide access to advanced computing power and bespoke AI software through what it calls a "Supercharged Sandbox." A sandbox refers to a controlled environment where companies can test new ideas such as products, services or technologies. The programme is intended to help firms in the early stages of exploring AI, offering access to technical expertise, better datasets and regulatory support, the FCA said. It is open to all financial services companies experimenting with AI. "This collaboration will help those that want to test AI ideas but who lack the capabilities to do so," Jessica Rusu, the FCA's chief data, information and intelligence officer, said. "We'll help firms harness AI to benefit our markets and consumers, while supporting economic growth." Finance minister Rachel Reeves has urged Britain's regulators to remove barriers to economic growth, describing it as an "absolute top priority" for the government. In April, she said she was pleased with how the FCA and the Prudential Regulation Authority, part of the Bank of England, were responding to her call to cut red tape. Nvidia said the initiative would allow firms to explore AI-powered innovations in a secure environment, using its accelerated computing platform. "AI is fundamentally reshaping the financial sector," said Jochen Papenbrock, EMEA head of financial technology at Nvidia, citing improvements in data analysis, automation and risk management. He added that the sandbox will provide firms with a "secure environment to explore AI innovations using Nvidia's full-stack accelerated computing platform, supporting industry-wide growth and efficiency." The testing is set to begin in October.

CEO Sundar Pichai reveals Google's ‘Most Important Metric' and how company is tracking it

Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that AI has boosted software engineering productivity by 10%, a metric the company actively tracks. Google measures this by assessing the increase in engineering capacity, in hours per week, gained through AI tools. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has claimed that artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing the productivity of the company's software engineers. He also noted that the Alphabet-owned tech giant is actively measuring the impact of AI on its engineers. During a recent episode of the "Lex Fridman Podcast,' Pichai explained that Google is closely observing how AI is boosting the output of its software developers. As per Pichai, it is "the most important metric,' and the company 'carefully measures it.' He even mentioned that Google actively measures 'how much has our engineering velocity increased as a company due to AI?" Pichai noted that the company currently estimates a 10% boost in engineering velocity attributed to AI. How Google tracks AI's role in increasing productivity of its engineers According to a report by Business Insider, a Google spokesperson explained that the company tracks AI's role in improving productivity of software developers by measuring the increase in engineering capacity created, in hours per week, through the use of AI-powered tools. To put it simply, it's a way of measuring how much extra time engineers are gaining for using AI tools by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo As for whether Google expects that 10% figure to continue rising, Pichai didn't clarify. However, he noted that agentic capabilities, where AI can take actions and make decisions more autonomously, will unlock the "next big wave." Google has also developed its internal tools to assist engineers with coding. Last year, it launched an internal coding copilot named "Goose," trained on 25 years of Google's technical history, Business Insider previously reported. While AI is playing a growing role, Pichai said during the podcast that Google still plans to hire more engineers next year. 'The opportunity space of what we can do is expanding too,' he said, adding that he hopes AI will reduce some of the grunt work and free up time for more enjoyable aspects of engineering. Meanwhile, the company is also monitoring the volume of code being generated by AI within Google, a figure which is reportedly on the rise. At Alphabet's most recent earnings call, Pichai mentioned that more than 30% of the company's new code is now generated by AI, up from about 25% in October 2024. Apart from Google, Microsoft UK CEO Darren Hardman said its GitHub Copilot coding assistant now writes 40% of the company's code at London Tech Week this week. He noted that this change is 'enabling us to launch more products in the last 12 months than we did in the previous three years.' In April, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted that AI could handle half of Meta's developer work within a year. TruAlt Bioenergy gains OMC status, plans 100+ flex-fuel outlets across India

TruAlt Bioenergy has been authorised as an Oil Marketing Company (OMC), enabling it to market and retail ethanol, Bio-CNG, petrol, diesel, and electric vehicle (EV) services across India. The company will roll out more than 100 flex-fuel retail outlets initially in Karnataka and Maharashtra. The company has become one of the first private biofuel companies in India to receive this authorisation. The approval allows the company to retail both renewable and conventional fuels, expanding its operations into the fuel marketing segment. Retail plans and rural focus The company plans to set up fuel stations offering ethanol (E93), Bio-CNG, petrol, diesel, EV charging, and battery swapping services. TruAlt also aims to establish at least 5% of its outlets in notified remote areas. The retail expansion is expected to generate employment for over 2,000 people. Vijay Nirani, MD, TruAlt Bioenergy, said, 'Securing OMC status marks a defining step in TruAlt Bioenergy's growth journey. This milestone enables us to directly serve India's evolving fuel needs while accelerating the shift toward cleaner energy. While our retail network will support conventional fuels, our greater focus will be on integrating biofuels and expanding rural outreach. 'By setting up outlets across high-demand corridors and remote regions, we aim to drive rural development, generate local employment, and help build a more inclusive and sustainable energy infrastructure for the country." Position in the biofuels sector TruAlt holds a 7% share in India's molasses-based ethanol market and 3.7% of the overall ethanol supply. The company is also expanding in the compressed biogas (CBG) segment and is working on plans to enter the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) space, with a proposed production facility of 10 crore litres annually. India's consumption of petroleum products reached 239.5 million metric tonnes in FY 2024–25. Petrol use grew by 7.5% and aviation turbine fuel by 8.9%. The petrol-to-diesel consumption ratio has shifted from 3.6 to 2.3 over the past decade, with petrol demand rising at a compound annual growth rate of 7.7%. Nirani added: 'With over 2.5 crore cars sold annually, surpassing the population of many countries, India's appetite for mobility is growing at an extraordinary pace. This is our moment to shape a retail network that fuels today's growth while powering the transition to a cleaner, more intelligent, and purpose-driven mobility ecosystem.' India's ethanol blending has reached 18.4% in the current ethanol supply year, with a record 19.7% in February 2025. TruAlt's entry into SAF production aims to position the company as a key player globally in ethanol-based aviation fuel.
