Eels youngster's setback opens door for Dylan Brown as Mitchell Moses set for return

Yahoo22-07-2025
The Parramatta Eels have been handed a major blow in the backend of the season with fullback Isaiah Iongi ruled out for up to four weeks, while they can expect chief halfback Mitchell Moses back. Eels fans have been building for the return of Moses who returned to the struggling side and managed to lift their performances dramatically.
The side sitting second-last has lost three games in a row, but 22-year-old Iongi has been a standout star amid the form slump. Although Jason Ryles and the team have been delivered a huge blow with Iongi ruled out for up to four weeks due to a hand injury, according to .
Iongi suffered the broken hand in the defeat to the Canberra Raiders last Saturday, but played close to 60 minutes with the injury. Iongi will now sit out for around a month as he recovers. Iongi was brought into the side with former captain Clint Gutherson moving on after reports he was going to lose his No.1 jersey to the youngster.
In a tough year where Ryles has implemented change throughout the squad, Iongi has been a star with his work ethic a highlight at the back. While the Eels will be welcoming back their chief playmaker in Moses, they will be losing one of their best attacking weapons in the same week.
Mitchell Moses set for Parramatta Eels return
The Eels struggled without Moses in the side for the start of the year, before the halfback returned. He then injured himself ahead of State of Origin Game 2 for NSW and hasn't played since round 14. His expected return this weekend against the Broncos will boost the Eels who have shown promising signs in recent weeks, despite going down to the Dragons, Panthers and Raiders. His combination with Zax Lomax was a real highlight for Eels fans, before Moses' injury and the club will be hoping the duo can link up again on the right side.
Dylan Brown faces potential Eels recall
Iongi's injury paves the way for Dylan Brown to make a return to the XIII. The five-eighth was dropped from the side to play the Raiders with Ryles planning for the future with the side out of finals set to miss out on finals footy. Brown is on his way out the door to join the Knights at the end of the season.
Ryles opted to play Brown at No.9 against the Panthers in week 19, before leaving him out against the Raiders last weekend. Questions were asked if Brown had played his final game for the club. Although Ryles shut down this suggestion last week.
"No, he hasn't, I don't think, but I don't have a crystal ball," Ryles said on Friday. "The option to use him again is certainly there. If that does come up and we get an injury or two and he fits into that picture, then we'll do that, definitely."
And it appears there is a chance he could slot into the halves, alongside Moses, with Joash Papalii the back-up fullback in the squad. Although Ryles could use Lomax in the No.1 jersey if he feels he wants a different line-up.

FC Barcelona Reveals Disciplinary Proceedings And Punishment For Star

FC Barcelona announced that it has launched disciplinary proceedings against last season's captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and also temporarily stripped him of the armband. 'FC Barcelona informs that, following the disciplinary proceedings opened against the player Marc-Andre Stegen, and until this procedure is definitively resolved, the Club, in agreement with the Sports Management [department] and the technical staff, has decided to temporarily remove him from the captaincy of the football first team,' a statement sent out on Thursday afternoon began. 'During this period, the duties of first captain will be assumed by the current second captain, Ronald Araujo,' it then added. The turn of events means that a Radio Catalunya report on the matter published Wednesday evening was accurate. TV3 said that the club had decided to take the armband off Ter Stegen, in response to him refusing to have a medical report sent to Barca. The German has once again fallen to a back injury which it is believed will keep him out for at least four months. Coincidentally, that is the amount of time that the Catalans need him sidelined for in order to register new signings such as Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford. To stay on the right side of Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits, Barca could use up to 80% of Tet Stegen's salary to get Garcia and Rashford the green light for the upcoming La Liga season, which starts on August 17 for Hansi Flick's defending champions. Ter Stegen took the rare step of announcing via social media that his knock will keep him out for three months, and was summoned to the Joan Gamper Training Center on Thursday morning. Spending around an hour and a half there, Barca then announced its disciplinary measures in the afternoon in Catalonia. As Barca mentioned, Araujo will be Flick's captain on the field and the armband could fall to someone like Frenkie de Jong or Pedri if the Uruguayan is benched in favor of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez on the back line. FC Barcelona has cleared up the matter before the Joan Gamper Trophy match For the traditional season opener which will take place against Cesc Fabregas and Sergi Roberto's Como, Araujo is likely to be the captain and give a speech at some point of the proceedings to FC Barcelona's fans.

Maddison set to miss most of Spurs season after knee injury

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison is expected to miss most of the upcoming Premier league season after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament. The England international missed the end of the 2024/25 campaign with a knee injury but featured in pre-season under new boss Thomas Frank. Maddison collapsed in pain during a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in South Korea on Sunday with no one around him and left the pitch on a stretcher late in the game. Spurs' worst fears have now been confirmed, with the player facing surgery. "We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee," said a club statement. "The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. "His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team." The news is also a major blow to Maddison's hopes of forcing his way into England boss Thomas Tuchel's selection for next year's World Cup. Tottenham, who won the Europa League last season, face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Italy on August 13 before launching their Premier League campaign against Burnley three days later. jw/kca/ea
