Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. will miss the coming season after an MRI confirmed that he ruptured an Achilles tendon. Coach Kevin Stefanski said before Wednesday's practice that Emerson will have surgery, but a date has not been determined. 'It's disappointing. Injuries are the worst part of our game, but he will bounce back, I know what he is made of,' Stefanski said. 'Yesterday was a lot. He is sore today.' Emerson, a third-round draft pick in 2022, got hurt while covering a wide receiver during a 7-on-7 drill Tuesday. He dropped to the ground in pain and screamed before being carted off the field with a towel covering his head. He has 202 tackles, four interceptions, a fumble recovery and sack in three seasons. His loss is another blow to a Cleveland defense looking to rebound from a poor season and already short-handed with linebackers Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (neck injury) and Jordan Hicks (retired) ruled out. With Emerson out, Greg Newsome likely will move into the No. 2 corner spot opposite Pro Bowler Denzel Ward. Both Emerson and Newsome also played some nickel back, covering slot receivers. Cameron Mitchell would be the top candidate for full-time nickel duties. ___ AP NFL:

Buffalo Sabres home arena to remain KeyBank Center after reaching 10-year naming rights extension
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres' home arena will continue being called the KeyBank Center after the two sides announced a 10-year naming rights extension on Wednesday. The new deal will kick in next year and run through 2035-36. The Cleveland-based bank has a large regional presence in Buffalo, and took over the downtown arena's naming rights after acquiring First Niagara Bank in 2016. As part of the extension, the bank's name will be featured on the Sabres' helmets for away games starting this season. The arena is undergoing a series of long-needed renovations since first opening in 1996. Last year, the Sabres replaced the roof and installed a new video scoreboard over center ice. The next series of renovations are expected to address upgrading the seats and fan amenities. The Sabres' control the building, which is also home to the three-time defending National Lacrosse League champion Bandits, and have placed an emphasis on adding more events since Pete Guelli took over as the team's chief operating officer last year. In November, the arena will host one of Paul McCartney's 20 North American tour stops, as well as host a pre-Olympic U.S. vs. Canada women's hockey Rivalry Series game. The Sabres, meanwhile, have been struggling on the ice with the team in the midst of an NHL-record 14-season playoff drought. ___ AP NHL:

Cubs Blockbuster Trade Idea: Chicago Lands Cy Young Winner In 1-for-1 Swap
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs need starting pitching, as the team's schedule after the All-Star break has made abundantly clear. For the first time all season, the Cubs entered Wednesday with a two-game deficit for first place in the National League Central. They trail the Milwaukee Brewers, who have five quality starters in their rotation compared to the Cubs' two. As Thursday's trade deadline approaches, the Cubs' top objective should be to find someone who can start a playoff game. It's easier said than done, but that's how contenders separate themselves from the pack at this time of year. CLEVELAND, OHIO - APRIL 10: Pitcher Shane Bieber #57 of the Cleveland Guardians watches from the dugout prior to the game against the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field on April 10, 2024 in Cleveland,... CLEVELAND, OHIO - APRIL 10: Pitcher Shane Bieber #57 of the Cleveland Guardians watches from the dugout prior to the game against the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field on April 10, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio. MoreBleacher Report's Joel Reuter proposed an intriguing option for the Cubs in that regard on Wednesday: How about Cleveland Guardians starter Shane Bieber, who is almost ready to return after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery? Reuter proposed a one-for-one mock trade in which the Cubs would acquire Bieber for first base/outfield prospect Jonathan Long. "The Guardians signed Bieber to a one-year, $10 million deal during the offseason that includes a 2026 player option worth $16 million and carrying a $4 million buyout. He has yet to pitch at the MLB level this year as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he is on the comeback trail, allowing four hits and one earned run with 14 strikeouts in 7.1 innings over his first three rehab starts," wrote Reuter. "The Guardians were on the other end of a similar trade pickup last year when they acquired a rehabbing Alex Cobb, and he ended up starting two playoff games." Bieber, the 2020 American League Cy Young winner, went four innings and allowed one earned run in his Double-A rehab start Tuesday, punching out seven batters. He may not be fully stretched out yet, but he sure looks ready to retire big-league hitters. Will the Cubs make a strong push for Bieber by Thursday? The answer could help determine the ultimate outcome of their season. More MLB: Yankees Rumors: Pirates Emerging As Likely Pitching Trade Partner?
