Siraj strikes after Jaiswal helps India set England daunting target
Yashasvi Jaiswal made a sparkling hundred and Washington Sundar a blistering fifty before Mohammed Siraj struck with the last ball of Saturday's play to bolster India's hopes of a series-levelling win in the fifth and deciding Test against England at the Oval. India were dismissed for 396 in their second innings on the third day as they set England a target of 374 to win with just over two days' play remaining. Siraj, ever-present in all five matches of a gruelling series, then yorked Zak Crawley for 14 with just two balls left in the day's play to spark joyous celebrations among the tourists. England were 50-1 at stumps, still requiring a further 324 runs to win, with Ben Duckett 34 not out. No side have made more to win in the fourth innings of a Test at the Oval than England's 263 in a one-wicket victory over Australia back in 1902. However, the most England have made to win any Test in the fourth innings was their 378 against India at Edgbaston in 2022, while they also chased down 371 at Headingley in the opening match of this series. Earlier, Jaiswal was out for 118, his second hundred of the series after the talented left-hander's ton at Headingley. The 23-year-old opener received superb support from Akash Deep in a third-wicket partnership of 107, the paceman belying his status as a nightwatchman with an accomplished 66 -- his maiden Test fifty. Ravindra Jadeja and Sundar, both fresh from hundreds in Manchester, each made 53, with Sundar launching a brutal assault after a depleted England took the new ball. A wayward home team, a bowler down after Chris Woakes suffered a shoulder injury diving in the field on Thursday, harmed their own cause by dropping six catches in the innings, with Jaiswal reprieved three times. India resumed Saturday on 75-2. Deep had made 21 when he edged Josh Tongue only for Crawley, diving across to his left from third slip, to floor the two-handed catch. Deep went to fifty when he pulled Gus Atkinson for his ninth four. But with India on the verge of batting through the morning session without losing a wicket, Deep got a leading edge to backward point off Jamie Overton. - Gill falls shy of Gavaskar record - Shubman Gill, who has enjoyed a remarkable first series as India captain, fell to the very first ball after lunch when lbw to Gus Atkinson for 11. His exit left Gill just 20 runs adrift of Sunil Gavaskar's longstanding record for the most runs by an Indian cricketer in a Test series of 774, set against the West Indies in 1971. Gill compiled 754 runs at a superb average of 75, including four hundreds. Jaiswal's quick single off Atkinson saw the elated batsman to a 127-ball century, including 12 fours and two sixes. England dropped a sixth catch when, having set a trap to have Jaiswal taken at leg gully, the batsman duly obliged, only for Duckett to put him down off Overton. Jaiswal was eventually dismissed when he ramped Tongue straight to deep backward point before Jadeja completed his fifth fifty of the series in 71 balls. England took the new ball as soon as possible, with India 342-7 off 80 overs and promptly tried to bounce out Sundar in what proved to be an expensive ploy. The left-hander responded with three superb sixes, including hoisting Tongue, who finished with figures of 5-125, over fine leg and deep midwicket in the space of three balls. Sundar then smashed two fours and a soaring six over midwicket off three successive Atkinson deliveries to complete a brilliant 39-ball fifty before he was last man out. jdg/jc

Luis Diaz's Bayern deal moves €100m transfer closer
Liverpool completed a deal earlier this week which sees Luis Diaz join Bayern Munich for around £65m. The Colombian winger's contract was ticking down - set to expire in 2027 - and so Richard Hughes took the decision to let him go. 🔴 Shop the LFC Store LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Cody Gakpo performs best on the left side of attack and Rio Ngumoha looks set to receive significant minutes in that sector next season. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range from 9am TODAY Don't forget Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike either. Those two former Bundesliga stars are multifaceted attackers - who Liverpool decision-makers see as potential solutions on the left side. Mac Allister upset over Diaz sale You can add the proceeds of Diaz's £65m sale to the Bavarians to the cash pile being readied for a SECOND bid for Alexander Isak too. In short, this transfer has plenty of upsides - even if Liverpool must find 13 Premier League goals from someone else next season. All is rosy in the garden? Not quite. Because now a report comes in from Spain which suggests Alexis Mac Allister is dismayed at the sale of his fellow South American. Mac Allister, 26, posted on social media earlier this week that he was in tears following Diaz's departure. And now Defensa Central claims that the Argentina World Cup winner is considering his future at the club. Real Madrid want Mac Allister 'The Argentine is very upset with the sale of Luis Diaz, whom he considered his brother at Liverpool,' the report states. Now it must be borne in mind that this outlet is very much biased towards Real Madrid. And if they spot an opportunity to send a transfer target towards the Bernabeu then they will take it. It's been reported that Mac Allister is a favourite of Xabi Alonso - and he was just as admired by previous Madrid coaching incumbent Carlo Ancelotti. Madrid are certainly sniffing around and are still in need of a proper successor Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Liverpool goalkeeper suffers nightmare start to loan after controversial penalty in heavy defeat
Liverpool loanee Harvey Davies suffered a nightmare debut at Crawley Town, conceding a penalty within nine minutes of the start of the new League Two season. The goalkeeper joined Crawley on a season-long loan at the end of June, in a summer of major overhaul in Liverpool's goalkeeping ranks. The 21-year-old has trained regularly with Alisson and Co over the last year, but is yet to play a first-team match for the Reds. And his debut for Crawley didn't go to plan with the Red Devils losing 3-0 against Grimsby Town on Saturday. A tentative and nervous start set the tone for the visitors at Blundell Park. Davies misjudged the flight of a long pass downfield in the early stages and, after stalling, came flying off his line to retrieve the ball. READ MORE: Liverpool has signed 'best in world' this summer, claims Anfield expert READ MORE: Liverpool announces new contract for left-back as Championship loan move confirmed While he did claim the ball, Davies also collided with Kieran Green in the box and a slightly controversial penalty was awarded, despite the protests of the Crawley players. The keeper could do nothing as Jaze Kabia steered the ball into the bottom corner from the spot, nor was he able to get anywhere near a bullet Cameron McJannet header after half an hour. But Davies will feel disappointed with his attempts to stop Evan Khouri's strike from distance after the break. Despite getting a hand to it, the on-loan Liverpool man was unable to stop it sliding under his grasp and into the net. It was another moment to forget on a difficult first outing for Crawley. The three-goal loss means Scott Lindsey's side sit bottom of the table on the opening weekend of the season. But there were some positive moments for Davies, who made two smart stops to twice keep out Jayden Sweeney. Oddly, his goalkeeper's jersey didn't feature a Crawley badge and was just a plain blue Adidas shirt with a no.1 located where the club crest usually appears. The stint at Crawley is Davies' second loan of his career, having joined Crewe Alexandra for the 2023/24 season. He is one of three keepers to leave Liverpool this summer, with Caoimhin Kelleher joining Brentford in a permanent switch and Vitezslav signing on loan for Ajax. In their place, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman and Armin Pesci are now playing backup to Alisson at Liverpool. For Davies and Crawley, a home match against Newport County beckons next week. As for Liverpool's other loanee in the EFL, Isaac Mabaya played 20 minutes in Wigan Athletic's 3-1 win over Northampton Town.
