Aaron-Wooi Yik pick up where they left off in Malaysia Masters opener
Fresh off their Thailand Open triumph, the world No. 3 overcame Taiwan's world No. 17 Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-18, 21-16 in a steady straight-games win to book their place in the second round.
Despite the smooth performance, Aaron admitted concerns over a short recovery period after back-to-back tournaments.
"We just finished a tournament last week, so we haven't had enough rest. But it's not really a problem," said Aaron.
"Our performance today was just okay. There's definitely room for improvement."
Next up for Aaron-Wooi Yik is another Taiwanese combination — world No. 21 Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han — whom they have never played before.
Wooi Yik acknowledged the challenge of taking on unfamiliar opponents.
"It's never easy when you haven't played a pair before," he said.
"Even in Thailand, we had to battle hard against a French pair we'd never faced. You can't afford to take anyone lightly these days."
"The level in men's doubles is incredibly high right now. Every pair brings something unique. There's no such thing as an easy match anymore."
Wooi Yik credited their coach Herry IP for keeping them on track.
"We prepare as best we can and trust the game plan. We're still learning from coach Herry, and that process is ongoing."
He added that they remain a work in progress.
"We know what we want to achieve on court, but we're still far from that level. It's a gradual journey."

Li Peng: Pearly-Thinaah are redefining excitement in women's doubles

PETALING JAYA: Former shuttler Ang Li Peng knows what it takes to stand atop the podium and the senior is thrilled to see Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah climbing that same path to glory. Li Peng etched her name in history alongside Lim Pek Siah when they became the first Malaysian women's doubles pair to strike gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The pair's victory was an important breakthrough and Malaysia then went on to win four women's doubles titles in the next five editions through Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty (2006), Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei (2014), Vivian-Chow Mei Kuan (2018) and Pearly- Thinaah (2022). Since then, Pearly- Thinaah have risen to become one of the most exciting pairs in the world, hitting a career-high No. 2 in the world rankings last month. "It's amazing to see each generation producing standout players. As senior athletes, we are happy to see the players evolving," said Li Peng, who is a lawyer now. "Pearly- Thinaah have a dynamic style of play. They redefine excitement for today's generation. "In my opinion, they are an all-rounded pair – strong in attack, solid in defense and capable of producing thrilling rallies." After seeing Pearly-Thinaah enjoy a fine year so far, Li Peng has backed the pair to end Malaysia's wait for a medal in the women's doubles in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. "Pearly-Thinaah have always been one of the most consistent pairs we ever had. Given their current form, they are at their peak and their chances of winning a medal is very high," said Li Peng. "They have consistently reached semi-finals and finals in their past few tournaments and this doesn't just require skills and good strategies but mental strength as well." Pearly-Thinaah have reached at least the semi-finals in five out of their past six tournaments. Overall this year, the duo have captured the Thailand Open and finished runners-up in the Japan Open, Indonesian Open and Masters. Li Peng also believes that returning to the same venue as the Paris Olympics - the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle - will give Pearly-Thinaah huge motivation in the world meet. In the Olympics last August, the pair created history by becoming the first Malaysians to reach the last four of the women's doubles in the showpiece event. "Psychologically, it will help to play in Paris again after the Olympics. They are familiar with the stadium," said Li Peng. "The moment they step into the stadium, their spirits will be lifted and they will be highly motivated." Pearly-Thinaah have received a bye in the first round and will likely play Hong Kong's Lui Lok Lok-Tsang Hiu Yan in the second round. Meanwhile, Malaysia will also be represented in the women's doubles by world No. 18 Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee. The pair, who have improved steadily since combining last year, have also been given a bye in the first round and could face world No. 19 Bulgarian sisters Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva for a place in the third round.

PSG begin French title defence as Pogba returns home and Paris FC step up
PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain will be hoping a severely curtailed summer break does not come back to bite them as the Ligue 1 season begins this weekend, headlined by the newly-crowned European champions and featuring the return to France of Paul Pogba. It is just the second time that the French top flight has boasted the Champions League winners among its ranks, with PSG's success against Inter Milan in May following Marseille's triumph in 1993. Luis Enrique's team added the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday as they came from two goals down against Tottenham before winning on penalties. The nature of that success was made all the more remarkable given they had just a week's pre-season training under their belts, and no friendly matches. That is after they went all the way to the Club World Cup final in the United States, their 3-0 defeat against Chelsea on July 13 bringing the curtain down on a marathon 65-game season. That did not take the shine off their achievement in winning the Champions League, but those exertions risk having an impact on Luis Enrique's players further down the line. "What we did last season had been the objective for all PSG supporters, for the whole club, and for everyone who played for the club," PSG's coach said this week. "Now we want to keep on making history, and that means winning consecutive Champions Leagues, so that is our objective. That is the dream." Put another way, continued European success is the priority over winning a 12th domestic title in 14 years. PSG are nevertheless overwhelming favourites to do that as they attack the season having added goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Ukrainian centre-back Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth. French football has been mired in crisis due to difficulties finding a domestic broadcast partner willing to offer the kind of money needed to help teams beyond PSG compete with their European counterparts. At the end of last season, the French league pulled the plug on a cut-price deal with streaming platform DAZN. Instead it has launched its own platform, a bold step which may succeed in the long run but for now means clubs have no guaranteed television income. Seven-time champions Lyon's woes almost led to them being relegated – they were initially demoted to Ligue 2 by French football's financial watchdog before successfully appealing that punishment. However, they were told they would have to cut their wage bill and transfer budget for this campaign and the future still looks uncertain – key players such as Rayan Cherki, Alexandre Lacazette and goalkeeper Lucas Perri have all departed. Marseille and Monaco completed the podium in Ligue 1 last season and surely have the best chance of challenging PSG this time. Monaco have signed Pogba on a two-year deal, giving the 2018 World Cup winner a chance to revive a career that has been stalled by injury and an 18-month doping ban. Pogba is now 32 and has hardly played in three years, but Monaco are hopeful he can help them make a real push at the top of the table. "The next step for us is to have a team that is mentally stronger, that really believes it can go far in the Champions League and challenge Paris," said Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro. Pogba has never previously played in France having left Le Havre for Manchester United as a teenager. Fellow 2018 World Cup winner Olivier Giroud, meanwhile, has returned to Ligue 1 aged 38 to join Lille. It remains to be seen what impact he might have, and whether Paris FC can feature prominently following promotion. They have big ambitions after a takeover last year by the Arnaults, one of the world's wealthiest families. It is the first time since 1990 that two Parisian teams have featured in the top flight, and the rivalry between them will be stoked by the fact Paris FC will play home games at the Stade Jean-Bouin – a stone's throw from PSG's Parc des Princes. Paris FC have already invested significant sums in the transfer market but will probably have to wait before seriously challenging their neighbours.

Ex-KL City coach picks Citizens to win EPL title
KUALA LUMPUR: Manchester City will be the team to beat in the new Premier League season, said former KL City coach Bojan Hodak. Hodak believes defending champions Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, face a bigger challenge this time around as the league kicks off tomorrow with the Reds hosting Bournemouth at Anfield. The Croatian coach feels Manchester City, who had a disappointing campaign last term by finishing third, are primed for redemption this season with a ninth Premier League crown. Hodak said the arrivals of Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and French forward Rayan Cherki have further strengthened Pep Guardiola's side. "City will be the favourites to win the Premier League. They didn't do well last season, but I believe Guardiola will be looking for redemption. They had a good squad last season, but were unlucky with injuries and players losing form. "Guardiola has the full support of the owners, and they can easily spend £100 million (RM570m) on a new player when needed. They still have the best squad, and for me, that will make the difference," said Hodak who led Persib Bandung to their second Indonesia Liga 1 crown in May. On Liverpool, Hodak said while they retain a strong squad, ageing key players and the need to integrate new signings could prove challenging for Slot. "Liverpool have a strong squad that won the title, but the key players are getting older. Slot has the task of blooding new players. "Title defence is always difficult. Last season he continued with (Jurgen) Klopp's blueprint, but now he will have to include new players, and this could affect their performance," he said. As for the rest of the title contenders, Hodak gave Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea only an outside chance of lifting the trophy.
