Bumrah's workload management won't change, we want him available for big games: Agarkar

The Hindu2 days ago
Despite criticism surrounding the workload management plan of Jasprit Bumrah, chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) asserted that the way the pace talisman is handled will not be changed as they want him "available for all the big games."
Bumrah has been included in India's 15-member T20 squad for the Asia Cup starting September 9 in the UAE.
There have been some sharp talks after Bumrah played only three out of the five matches at the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, citing workload management.
'I don't think there is any written plan at the moment. Obviously, there has been a nice break after the England series. The team management or the physios or people concerned are always in touch. It's not just now, and even before his injury, we tried to look after him because we know how valuable he is,' said Agakar during the press meet to announce India's squad for the continental showpiece.
Agarkar was categorical in the expression of this thought that Bumrah needed to be preserved for important games in future.
"Clearly, we want him available for all the big games. I know in international cricket, every game is a big game. But there are World Cups, there is Champion Trophy or big series like England or Australia. We want him available all the time.
"Most fast bowlers are monitored and yes, because he has picked up an injury over the last 2-3 years. It's extra attention on how unique and how special he is and it won't change. It won't change whether it's this series or in the next six months," Agarkar added.
Doubts on availability
There were some doubts on Bumrah's availability for the upcoming continental tournament largely due to the proximity to the home Test series against the West Indies in October.
But the selectors opted to pick him and this will be Bumrah's first T20 tournament since last year's World Cup.
Agarkar said Bumrah's selection for future events will depend on his body condition at that time, and it will be discussed with everyone concerned.
"As we go along, how he is feeling, when we require him as a team, which is probably the most important thing and along with the physios and the trainers, those things are monitored. We hope that he is available more often than not," he added.
On Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill
Shreyas Iyer has last played a T20I in December 2023, when he scored a fine half-century in a win over Australia but he could not a find a place in the shortest format thereafter and a stellar run in the early part of this year, including the IPL 2025, did not change the status quo.
Asked about Iyer's omission, Agarkar said, "With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that we have to pick 15 at the moment, he'll have to wait for his chance."
Test skipper Shubman Gill was appointed as the vice-captain for the tournament in which Suryakumar will lead the team.
Gill's last T20 match was against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2024 and he has now replaced Axar Patel as the deputy of Suryakumar.
"Gill's form in England was something we expected but he exceeded it all. There are more options (for top order) now and Shubman has been in a great form anyway. When they get to Dubai, they can decide on the playing XI according to the opposition and the conditions," Agarkar said.
"Like I said, he (Gill) was (the) vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket. That was after the last World Cup so even at that point, clearly we were thinking along those lines.
"Now that he's available, at least he (Suryakumar) has two options. It's their headache to pick the batting lineup (now); ours was to pick the 15 and so. But we've got some real depth as far as T20 cricket is concerned and we are very active with it," he noted.
Speaking about Yashaswi Jaiswal's failure to make the cut, Agarkar termed it unfortunate.
"It's unfortunate, with regards to Jaiswal, with Abhishek Sharma in the mix and he can bowl a little bit as well. It's unfortunate Jaiswal has had to miss out," he added.

Jasprit Bumrah's critics told to ‘open mouth carefully' amid workload debate: ‘There are no stains on him'

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has lashed out at the critics of Jasprit Bumrah and warned them to be careful before saying anything bad about him. Bumrah has been constantly facing the heat since the England tour, where he missed a couple of Tests as part of his workload management. He has drawn criticism from some former cricketers for being selective about the matches he plays. Adding to that, a parallel narrative emerged during the England tour, suggesting India tend to falter in games featuring him, after the team lost both matches in which he featured. India's Jasprit Bumrah hasn't featured in a T20I since the T20 World Cup final.(HT_PRINT) Kaif emphasised Bumrah's ability to change the match on his own and pointed out how many matches he has won for India in the past. 'Open your mouth carefully because you mentioned that whatever matches we played in England, we lost when he (Jasprit Bumrah) played. You better look at how many matches he has played and India won them, go and find out that as well, regardless of the format. When he plays, how many times does he give match-winning performances? Go and find that stat as well. Bumrah is a promising diamond of India. You don't report him. There are no stains on him," Kaif said on his YouTube channel. 'No problem in bowling 28 overs' Kaif backed Bumrah's role in white-ball cricket, stressing that workload management should not be an issue in the Asia Cup. He argued that the 31-year-old can easily handle 28 overs across the tournament and insisted his match-winning ability makes him indispensable for India in the shortest format. 'I already said that Bumrah might not be seen playing long in Tests, but in white-ball cricket, if India comes in the [Asia Cup] final, then he might play seven games. He will bowl 28 overs, and I am speaking about a two or three-week-long tournament. There is no problem in bowling 28 overs; he will get time to recover. You can rest him in one odd match against Oman or weaker teams. After workload management and a break, he will be used. I think he won't face any issues in bowling four overs. You need Bumrah in T20 because he can change the course of the game with his bowling,' he added.

Ajit Agarkar's comment sparks row as Shreyas Iyer left 'confused' by Asia Cup snub: 'Was a nonsensical statement'

Former India captain Kris Srikkanth has called out incumbent chief selector Ajit Agarkar for leaving Shreyas Iyer out of the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup and for making a 'nonsensical' statement to explain his omission. Shreyas Iyer has not been named in the 15-member squad for Asia Cup 2025 Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth — a former chief selector himself — admitted he was utterly baffled by the team management's decision to exclude Iyer from the T20I tournament despite his recent white-ball form, which includes strong performances in the Champions Trophy and the IPL. When asked about the decision to omit the Punjab Kings captain during Tuesday's press conference, Agarkar outlined the challenges of selection. He even countered by asking who Iyer could have replaced in the side, before admitting that there was no fault in the batter's performances. 'With regard to Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor is it ours. At the moment, you can only pick 15,' Agarkar said. Not only was Iyer left out of the 15-member squad, he also failed to find a place in the standby list, further fuelling criticism over his omission. 'On current form, Shreyas Iyer is an automatic choice. Let's be very clear. You need to look at recent matches; there's no point judging a player by form from a year ago. He scored 600 runs in the IPL at a strike rate of 175. Strike rate is the most important factor here,' Srikkanth said. 'He has been brilliant. Yet you have left him out. You've confused him now,' he added. 'For a player who has performed so well, you are saying: 'tell me who he will replace in the side'. I cannot understand this statement. It's a nonsensical statement from Agarkar. Totally nonsensical. I don't agree with him.' 'I cannot understand the logic' Srikkanth also questioned the inclusion of Sanju Samson in the squad, pointing to his IPL 2025 numbers — 285 runs at a strike rate of 140. The former opener argued that Iyer was a better fit compared to the wicketkeeper-batter. 'You can accommodate Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh and Sanju Samson, but there's no place for Shreyas Iyer. What is this statement? I cannot understand the logic behind this. There's no logic at all,' he said.

Now, Gill's a smash hit with brands

Gill MUMBAI: Indian cricket's latest blue-eyed boy, Shubman Gill , is the new favourite with brands. His stellar performance in the India-England Test series, both as captain and batsman, had already bolstered his brand value. Now, Gill's selection for the Asia Cup as vice-captain will only give further impetus to his brand equity. A Gen Z with much of his career ahead of him, Gill has all the chops a brand looks for. "Gill's brand value has appreciated by 30%-40% post the India-England series. His brand fees will increase anywhere in the range of 25%-50% depending on the kind of brand approaching him," Neeraj Jha, senior sports analyst and commentator, told TOI. From automobiles to global luxury brands, queries for Gill have shot up from an average of three to four per month to about 10-15 now, sources aware of discussions said. Gill currently charges endorsement fees in the range of Rs 4-5 crore for one brand per year. That can now easily go up to anywhere between Rs 6-8 crore, said Neerav Tomar, managing director and CEO at IOS Sports. Another analyst said that a few of his earlier deals were in the range of Rs 2-Rs 3.5 crore. "Gill already endorses close to 20 brands, and this number should go up. Youthful brands will seek new faces. Gill is the new Virat Kohli ," Tomar said. Gill's team, however, declined to comment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo The cricketer bagged a few big deals before the Test series. Tyre major MRF and global eyewear brand Oakley (for India) signed Gill as their brand ambassadors. Gill also expanded his associations with Casio and Coca-Cola during the year. From about eight brand associations in 2023, Gill's brand portfolio nearly doubled to 16 in 2025. The cricketer is estimated to have earned about Rs 40 crore in endorsement earnings in 2024. "A lot of MNCs are looking to sign Gill. Small brands can't afford him. His fees will only go up if he keeps on delivering," said Amitesh Shah, founder and CEO at sports, media, and entertainment company Legaxy, who estimates Gill's brand value to see a boost of over 40%. Sources said that Gill is "selective" about his brand partnerships, ensuring alignment with his values and career journey. Going ahead, perenniality (ability to deliver across all cricket formats) will be key for Gill to bag big brand deals, said Sandeep Goyal, chairman at Redifussion. "Perenniality leads to continued visibility, which is key to the endorsement game," said Goyal.
