'I married Ishita, but she was Afreen': UP man alleges forced conversion bid by Chhangur Baba; claims daughters were threatened, ATS probes Balrampur cleric's 'rate list'
According to officials, Jamaluddin—who hails from Balrampur—allegedly targeted individuals from various communities and maintained a 'rate list' for religious conversions. He was arrested earlier this month by the
Uttar Pradesh
Anti-Terrorism Squad.
Jyotirgmay Rai (35) has alleged that he was brainwashed by Chhangur Baba and later threatened with the murder of his two daughters in an attempt to force him to convert to Islam.
Rai's complaint, submitted to Additional Director General of Police Piyush Mordia on Tuesday, has triggered an investigation. Bhadohi superintendent of police Abhimanyu Mangalik confirmed that a probe is underway.
According to Rai, he married a woman he knew as Ishita through an Arya Samaj ceremony, only to later discover her real name was Afreen and that she belonged to a Muslim family.
Tensions reportedly escalated after the birth of their second daughter in March 2024, when Afreen's family allegedly began pressuring Rai to convert to Islam.

"Rai claims that Afreen left with their daughters for Lucknow in November 2024. When he followed them, he was allegedly threatened and subjected to brainwashing by Chhangur Baba. He has also claimed that he was asked to convert to Islam while his daughters were held at knifepoint," said the SP.
After working in Lucknow from December 2024 to April 2025, Rai returned to Bhadohi without converting and filed a petition before the high court seeking his children's custody.
"A police team has been deployed to investigate the matter," said the superintendent of police.
