Joe Schmidt throws serious doubt on Australia's chances of beating Lions after narrow Fiji escape

Yahoo20-07-2025
Joe Schmidt admitted Australia's shaky 21-18 victory over Fiji will have reinforced the British and Irish Lions' status as favourites to win the Test series.
It took a 78th-minute try from back-rower Harry Wilson to save the Wallabies from an embarrassing defeat less than two weeks out from the opener against the Lions at Suncorp Stadium.
Fiji were rampant in the second half in Newcastle and Schmidt insisted that 'quiet resolve' rather than outright conviction would be his team's currency during the three Tests against Andy Farrell's tourists.
'We didn't play well enough for people to have the expectation that we're going to come bowling into Brisbane and knock the Lions over. I'm not sure that expectation was there before Fiji,' head coach Schmidt said.
'There's not real confidence, but there's a quiet resolve. And that quiet resolve, hopefully over the three-match series, can build to something that will earn us the support of a very interested group.
'We haven't been together for six months. To have five trainings and to be seamless would be an expectation that I hoped for, rather than immediately believed would happen. Now we have another short runway to improve on where we were against Fiji.'
Not only did Australia scrape home in a game that saw a Fijian try by Sireli Maqala controversially ruled out, but they also lost fly-half Noah Lolesio with 20 minutes to go after his head hit the ground during a tackle by Elia Canakaivata.
Schmidt is hopeful that Lolesio will only be a short-term absentee after providing a positive update on the 25-year-old playmaker.
'The first question Noah asked me was 'did we win?'. He was still very much focused on the game and he appeared to be in good shape. That's the most important thing,' Schmidt said.
'It was whiplash and his head hit the ground. I'm hopeful that that will be something that resolves itself reasonably quickly. But we won't take any risks that we don't need to.'

Newcastle 'make' improved offer for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško

Newcastle have submitted an improved second bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško according to the Athletic's David Ornstein. Their new bid is believed to be in the region of €80m up front, after an opening bid of €75m and €5m in add-ons was rejected by the Bundesliga club. The report states that the Slovenian forward is still wanted by Manchester United, but indications suggest there is an unwillingness to pay the same sum as the Magpies, which puts Eddie Howe's side in a strong position as things stand. Positive talks have also taken place between the clubs and the 22-year-old, but nothing is agreed yet and there is no guarantee of the outcome or the striker's preferred destination, with it still possible Šeško stays with Leipzig. Newcastle have signed only Anthony Elanga in a frustrating summer to date, with Alexander Isak returning to club training amid a desire to leave the club and serious interest from Premier League champions Liverpool. 📸 Maja Hitij - 2025 Getty Images

World Aquatics Championships 2025: Leon Marchand breaks Ryan Lochte's record; Luca Urlando wins gold in butterfly

It's not a surprise that France's Léon Marchand is one of the best swimmers in the world. Marchand won four gold medals at the 2024 Olympics, destroying the competition and announcing himself as a dominant force in the sport. He took that a step further Wednesday. Marchand set a new standard in the 200m individual medley Wednesday, not only beating Ryan Lochte's record, but obliterating it by more than a second. Marchand, who won $30,000 for breaking the record, finished with a time of 1:52.69 during the semifinals Wednesday. The previous record, which was held by Lochte, was 1:54.00. Lochte set that record at the World Championships in 2011. With the win in the semifinals, Marchand will look to carry his success over to the final Thursday. Marchand won the 200m individual medley at the World Championships in both 2022 and 2023, and will look for his third gold in the event Thursday. Luca Urlando takes home gold in 200m butterfly The 200m butterfly has proved an elusive event for Team USA on the men's side following Michael Phelps' retirement. No American man had medaled in the event since 2011, Phelps' last time winning the 200m butterfly at the World Championships. But that changed Wednesday, as Luca Urlando came away with the gold. Urlando posted a 1:51:87 time, beating Poland's Krzysztof Chmielewski and Australia's Harrison Turner for the top spot. Chmielewski finished second with a time of 1:52:64. Turner came in third, posting a 1:54:17 time. The win is a long time coming for Urlando, who was on the rise before a shoulder injury derailed him in 2022. With the win, Urlando becomes the first American man to pick up a gold medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. The team struggled early at the event due to an illness that caused a number of swimmers to pull out of events or post slower times than usual. The team has recovered since then, with the women leading the way. Gretchen Walsh and Katie Ledecky are among the Team USA women to pick up gold medals at the World Championships so far. Jack Alexy sets new American record in 100m freestyle American Jack Alexy looked strong during 100m freestyle prelims Wednesday. Alexy turned in an incredible time of 46.81, setting an American record. Alexy's time narrowly beat Caeleb Dressel's 46.96 from the 2019 World Championships. It was an impressive performance by Alexy, but it didn't result in a medal ... yet. Alexy still needs to compete in the final. If he can recapture his semifinal performance, Alexy could walk away from the 100m freestyle with a medal. His job did get somewhat easier Wednesday after 100m freestyle favorite Pan Zhanle was surprisingly eliminated after a poor performance in the semis.

Liverpool handed Alexander Isak transfer boost as top Newcastle target gives encouragement

Liverpool has been handed a boost in their transfer pursuit of Alexander Isak, with Newcastle's top target Benjamin Sesko encouraging the Magpies over a move to St. James' Park. The Reds have maintained their interest in Isak, 25, despite already signing up-and-coming French Striker Hugo Ekitike for $104.8 million. Liverpool saw a bid worth $146M rejected by the Magpies, who have reaffirmed their desire to keep Isak at least another season. Newcastle also reportedly offered Isak a new contract with a release clause, but the Swede signaled his desire to leave the club this summer, with Liverpool the strongest suitors. The Magpies are believed to be holding out for a fee shy of $200M, but Newcastle would have to soften their stance for the Reds to return with a second offer. According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle has received encouragement from Sesko's camp over a transfer, with a bid worth $92.9M believed to be in the ballpark that Bundesliga side RB Leipzig would accept. Newcastle face competition for the 22-year-old Slovenian international, though. Manchester United are said to be eyeing Sesko, and Newcastle is now seeking to accelerate negotiations to prevent another one of their targets from being snapped up, as Ekitike was by Liverpool last month. Isak, who missed Newcastle's pre-season tour in South Korea and trained at former club Real Sociedad, has now returned to England to begin training with Eddie Howe's side. However, Howe delivered a strong message to his strong man over earning his place amid the transfer saga. "You have to earn the right to train with us," Howe told the Daily Mail. "We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. "So that is also at play here. We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal." "Of course I'd like him to but whether or not he will, I don't know at this moment in time," Howe said on Isak returning to training. "Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home." Newcastle legend Alan Shearer also issued a damning response to the Isak transfer saga. 'No, I'm not angry at all towards him," Shearer said, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast. "I understand how football works, I know what happens in and around the game. 'I probably understand his mentality. Do I like it? Do I understand it? Probably two different things. But I know what football is about and I know how it works, and obviously Liverpool have been into him or his agent. "I just thought it might have happened next year and if it really is impossible for Eddie to turn him around and he says no, and it sounds like that is the case, I want him to be out now, you get your big money for him, whoever's prepared to pay that and you get other people in, hopefully beforehand, and then you move on. 'As I said, no individual is bigger than any football club, and if he doesn't want to be there, fine, get what you can and get him out and say thanks very much for the memories, off you go.'
