Typhoon Podul prompts schools and offices to close in Taiwan, with heavy rains expected
It was unclear how serious the storm would be, with high waves and winds over much of the east coast but no major rain as of yet. On Wednesday morning, Podul was southeast of the island, moving at 155 kilometers (96 miles) per hour, and was expected to make landfall later in the day before moving swiftly across the island's southern tip, according to the Central Meteorological Agency.
Such storms typically hit the east coast hard before losing strength as they pass over the Central Mountain Range before continuing toward the Chinese coast. Podul's skirt measured 120 kilometers (75 miles) across and was expected to broaden even while losing strength as the storm moved westward across the Taiwan Strait.
The areas affected are well south of the capital, Taipei, along with Taiwan's main international airport and high-tech industrial base. Around a dozen flights that would have traveled south toward the path of the storm were delayed or canceled.
The counties and cities of Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, Yunlin, Pingtung and Hualien on the east coast and the island group of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait are expected to take the brunt of the storm.
Along with flooding, typhoons routinely damage fruit and other cash crops and bring landslides through the island's center. Much of central and southern Taiwan was badly hit by heavy rains in recent weeks that caused severe damage to crops but minimal casualties, while also knocking out electricity to rural areas that took weeks to repair.
Recovery crews are on alert due to recent heavy rains.

The King Fire is burning north of the Canyon Fire, which prompted evacuations, destroyed seven structures and injured three firefighters after breaking out last week near the Los Angeles County and Ventura County line. That fire has burned about 8 square miles (22 square kilometers) and was 97% contained as of Wednesday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Gifford Fire, California's largest blaze so far this year, has scorched at least 204 square miles (528 square kilometers) of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties since erupting on Aug. 1. It was 41% contained on Wednesday.

TAIPEI, Taiwan: Southern and eastern Taiwan came to a standstill on August 13 as authorities cancelled hundreds of flights, shut down schools and offices, and evacuated thousands ahead of Typhoon Podul's expected landfall. The mid-strength storm, with wind gusts reaching 191 kph (118 mph), is tracking toward the southeastern city of Taitung and is forecast to make landfall nearby Wednesday afternoon, according to weather officials. Early in the day, emergency alerts were sent to residents in parts of Taitung, warning of gusts above 150 kph (93 mph) and urging people to seek shelter immediately. Nine cities and counties suspended work and classes, including the southern hubs of Kaohsiung and Tainan. The capital, Taipei, home to Taiwan's financial markets, has so far been unaffected. Authorities have also evacuated more than 5,500 residents, including some whose homes were damaged by a powerful typhoon in July that brought record winds and caused significant power outages in a rare strike to Taiwan's west coast. The transport ministry reported the cancellation of all 252 domestic flights and 129 international services. Taiwan's two largest airlines, China Airlines and EVA Air, said most cancellations affected routes from Kaohsiung, with some flights from Taoyuan International Airport also grounded. After landfall, Podul is expected to sweep across Taiwan's densely populated western coast before heading toward China's Fujian province later this week. Forecasters warn that southern mountainous areas could see up to 600 mm (24 inches) of rain in the coming days, raising fears of flooding and landslides. Heavy rainfall has already plagued parts of southern Taiwan this month, with some areas receiving more than a year's worth of precipitation in just one week, causing deadly floods and landslides that killed four people.
