Jim Bowden Urges Phillies Not To Pick Up Jose Alvarado's $9 Million Option
Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado was suspended 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. In the wake of that suspension, the Phillies will have to look elsewhere for bullpen help. But it could also spell the end of Alvarado's time in Philadelphia.
Former MLB general manager Jim Bowden on Fourl Territory urged the Phillies not to pick up Alvarado's $9 million option for the 2026 season. When Bowden was asked what he'd do with Alvarado's option, he said, "Bye. Bye. Yeah, I'll replace him. I'll spend the money elsewhere. I'll spend $6 million more and get a better closer."
Normally, with how Alvarado has pitched, there wouldn't be any question of whether they should pick it up or not. But his suspension has jeopardized the Phillies' 2025 season and Alvarado's $9 million contract option in 2026.

Through his first 20 games before the suspension, Alvarado had a 2.70 ERA and seven saves. He struck out 25 batters compared to just four walks. His strikeout-to-walk ratio was more than double his career average.

His suspension hurt the Phillies significantly and will also drastically reduce his chances of earning the $9 million option that was on the table. Bowden, a former MLB general manager, had a strong opinion on whether that option should be used.
While he was pitching his way towards earning his $9 million option, Bowden believes he doesn't deserve it anymore. Instead, the Phillies could, in the eyes of Bowden, spend a little more than the $9 million allocated to Alvarado and acquire a better reliever.

Alvarado's suspension is a massive blow to the Phillies for the remainder of the 2025 season, the 2025 postseason, and even into 2026. Rob Thomson will have his work cut out for him as he deals with a shortened staff amid Alvarado's suspension.
The Phillies will have a decision to make in the offseason about whether to bring Alvarado back or not. For the former general manager, Bowden, that decision should be an easy one. Move on from Alvarado and look elsewhere for a new reliever.

Phillies' Bryce Harper, wearing elbow guard, homers in first AB after HBP, missing 5 games
TORONTO — Bryce Harper hopes he'll have the elbow guard he wants in a few weeks. He has never felt comfortable hitting with one; maybe it dates back to that bulky brace he wore for months after returning from Tommy John surgery. He has commissioned his friends at Absolutely Ridiculous to make a proper guard. Advertisement But he might never hit again without the makeshift guard he wore Tuesday night when he crushed a home run on the third pitch he saw in his return to the Phillies' lineup. Harper saw a hanging 0-2 splitter from Toronto Blue Jays righty Bowden Francis and drove it into the visiting bullpen at Rogers Centre. His blast followed a two-run Trea Turner homer and was only a small part of a six-run Phillies first inning. Elbow Guard Bryce 😤 Bryce Harper homers in first game since last Tuesday. — MLB (@MLB) June 3, 2025 It was a decent initial boost after a lost weekend without Harper as the Phillies were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers. He was plunked on the right elbow by a 95-mph Spencer Strider fastball a week ago and missed the next five games. He was not wearing an elbow guard. Now, he is. 'He's ready to go,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said before Tuesday's game. 'There's still some swelling in there, but it's not sore — to my knowledge anyway. So he's ready to go.' All it took was three pitches for Harper to prove his manager right. (Photo of Bryce Harper on May 24: Dennis Lee / Imagn Images)

Bryce Harper homers in first at-bat in return to Phillies' lineup after missing five games
TORONTO — With Bryce Harper back in the lineup, the Philadelphia Phillies got off to a booming start against the Toronto Blue Jays. Harper hit one of two Philadelphia home runs in a six-run first inning off right-hander Bowden Francis in Tuesday's series opener in Toronto. Harper was back in action after missing five games with a bruised right elbow. The Phillies went 1-4 without Harper and fell out of first place in the NL East. Harper followed a two-run home run by Trea Turner with a 394-foot blast, with both homers landing in Philadelphia's right field bullpen. It was Harper's first at-bat since he was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of a game last week. The home run was his ninth of the season. Harper's elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2022 World Series, remains a sensitive area. In light of the injury, Harper wore a protective guard on his right elbow Tuesday. Alec Bohm had shifted from third base to first base to replace Harper. Edmundo Sosa had taken over at third. Bohm was back at third base against the Blue Jays. He singled and scored in the first.
