Locals demand street lights on Cuttack canal stretch to revive evening hangout zone
Work to install street lights in the area under the Taladanda canal development project was slated for completion by July last year. The proposal aimed to transform the canal stretch with proper illumination, including decorative lighting, to attract evening visitors and boost local recreation and tourism. Absence of lighting has even halted the popular boating services.
"In the absence of lighting, the area has become a hotspot for anti-social activities.
People gather to drink and some even dump garbage into the canal without fear of being caught," said Dipayan Pattnaik, a resident of Jobra.
"The place used to become lively with families, joggers and tourists in the evening. Now, it's just pitch dark after 6pm and it feels unsafe," said Suresh Nayak, a visitor from Choudhury Bazaar.
Anita Mishra, another visitor, said, "I bring my kids to the canal on weekends, but with no lights, we have to leave early.

Boating service owner Kamal Dey, said, "We had to stop evening rides completely because it's risky for tourists. My income has dropped by nearly 60% since the illumination work stalled."
In response to the concerns, Mayor Subhash Singh told TOI, "The Taladanda canal illumination is part of the approved development plan. We have already installed over 78 poles and LED lights on the stretch. Due to some technical issues, we were unable to operate them, but the issue has been resolved, and the illumination will be done from Wednesday."

Tree fall backs up traffic for 2 hours on Valpoi-Ponda road
Valpoi: A mango tree came crashing down on the Valpoi-Ponda road at Savarshe, Valpoi, on Monday morning, disrupting rush hour traffic for over two hours and resulting in a major snarl. 'When emergency services personnel approached her, she was found holding on to the ropes to keep herself afloat inside the well that was half full with rainwater,' Moraskar said. Indoreans take up brooms to keep swachh city spick & span
Indore: In a unique display of civic responsibility, public representatives and people of the cleanest city in the country picked up brooms to clean up the city as sanitation workers enjoyed their Goga Navami holiday on Monday. The initiative was part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga - Har Ghar Swachhta Abhiyan'. Urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, MP Shankar Lalwani and mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav led the drive, sweeping the streets at Rajwada. Various residential and trade organisations also participated in the city-wide community cleanliness campaign. Madurai corpn launches ‘Ezhil Koodal' to clean up city hotspots
1 2 Madurai: Seeking to improve its poor ranking in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 survey, the Madurai Corporation has launched the 'Ezhil Koodal' initiative under the theme "Namma Sutham, Namma Perumai" (Our Cleanliness, Our Pride). The project aims to turn select areas into model clean zones through sanitation drives, beautification, and citizen participation. As part of the plan, 24 high-footfall 'hotspots', including bus stands, markets, and main roads, have been identified for round-the-clock maintenance. Extra sanitation workers, volunteers, and tractors have been deployed zone-wise to keep these areas litter-free. Corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan said the effort goes beyond cleaning. "We are working with residents' associations to clear identified areas and gather feedback. Awareness drives are also being held to discourage dumping on vacant land. Afternoon and night cleaning shifts are being introduced to handle commercial waste," she said. Assistant city health officer Abisekh said the initiative combines symbolic and practical steps.
