A few months ago, my nephew, an undergraduate at the National University of Singapore, was considering applying to an American university for his exchange programme in 2026.
Now, he is looking at universities in the United Kingdom, Australia and China.
Imperial China's highest institutes of learning were not just for locals.
For centuries, when China was the civilisational lodestar in the region, people from all over Asia came to study in its universities and try their luck in the famously tough imperial examinations. Some did very well.

To make it easier for foreign candidates, the Tang dynasty government created a special examination category in 627 that was basically a separate track just for foreign scholars.

The conservative network Newsmax will pay US$67 million to settle a lawsuit accusing it of defaming a voting equipment company by spreading lies about US President Donald Trump's 2020 election loss, according to documents filed on Monday. The settlement comes after Fox News Channel paid US$787.5 million to settle a similar lawsuit in 2023 and Newsmax paid what court papers describe as US$40 million to settle a libel lawsuit from a different voting machine manufacturer, Smartmatic, which also was a target of pro- Trump conspiracy theories on the network. Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis had ruled earlier that Newsmax did indeed defame Denver-based Dominion Voting Systems by broadcasting false information about the company and its equipment. But Davis left it to a jury to eventually decide whether that was done with malice and, if so, how much Dominion deserved from Newsmax in damages. Newsmax and Dominion reached the settlement before the trial could take place. The settlement was disclosed by Newsmax in a new filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. It said the deal was reached on Friday. 'Newsmax believed it was critically important for the American people to hear both sides of the election disputes that arose in 2020,' the company said in a statement. 'We stand by our coverage as fair, balanced and conducted within professional standards of journalism.'

US President Donald Trump said he would sign an executive order ahead of next year's midterm elections targeting mail-in ballots and voting machines, a move that would dramatically change how millions of Americans cast their ballots. Trump provided no evidence to back up his claims of widespread problems with voting machines. And he said there's not a country in the world that uses it now,' Trump said in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity after meeting the Russian leader, even though dozens of countries do so. Federal judges blocked an order Trump signed in March that would require proof of US citizenship to vote and ban the counting of valid mail-in ballots that arrive after election day.
