Gas company giant opening first-of-its-kind EV charging station in SF

Yahoo12-06-2025
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — One of the nation's largest gas companies is doing something it hasn't done in the Bay Area. Shell is opening its first electric vehicle charging station in the Bay Area this summer, a company spokesperson told KRON4.com.
This Shell Recharge EV charging hub is located in San Francisco's Sunset District at 19th Avenue and Kirkham Street. It is the former location of a smog check center and auto repair shop.
The charging station is similarly sized to most Shell gas stations across the country. The hub can charge up to 12 vehicles at a time, a Shell spokesperson said. There will be chargers with CCS connectors and speeds of up to 360kW.
'We are excited to open our first Shell Recharge EV charging hub in the Bay Area this summer,' Shell said in a statement. 'We look forward to bringing fast and convenient EV charging to this vibrant neighborhood.'

Shell has more than 4,000 EV charging stations in the U.S. compared to the company's more than 12,000 gas stations domestically.
Despite being primarily known as a gas company, Shell has announced its plans to prioritize clean energy. Its goal is to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050.
Shell first contacted the San Francisco City Planning Department in 2021 about a permit to demolish the auto repair shop occupying the space at that time, a city spokesperson told KRON4.com. Shell withdrew its application but then met with city officials in late 2022 to restart talks about taking over that space.
Eventually, Shell obtained the demolition permit in 2024 from the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection. The gas company then began construction to turn the auto repair shop space into an EV charging station.
About 11 percent of new car registrations are EVs, according to a 2022 report released by San Francisco city officials. The city has a goal of 2,000 public stations by 2025 and at least 5,000 by 2030. According to Electrek, there are currently 1,152 public charging ports in San Francisco.

TotalEnergies divests 45% stake in two Argentine blocks for $500m

TotalEnergies, through its affiliate Total Austral, has reached an agreement with YPF to sell its 45% interest in two unconventional oil and gas blocks in Argentina for $500m (€427.67m). The transaction involves the Rincon La Ceniza and La Escalonada blocks, valued at approximately $10,000 per acre. The concessions, spanning 51,000 net acres, are located in the prolific Vaca Muerta shale formation within the Neuquén Basin. These blocks are currently undergoing pilot development. Total Austral's partners in these concessions include Gas y Petroleo de Neuquen with a 10% stake and O&G Developments, a Shell-owned company, holding the remaining 45%. The completion of this divestment is contingent upon the satisfaction of standard conditions. TotalEnergies senior vice-president Americas exploration & production Javier Rielo said: 'The sale of Rincon La Ceniza and La Escalonada blocks is part of our active portfolio management strategy. TotalEnergies remains fully committed to Argentina, where it operates a large unconventional area of 183,000 nets acres in the Vaca Muerta play, after the divestment of these two blocks, which represented around 20% of our net acreage in that play. 'The company is currently producing gas and condensates from the operated blocks Aguada Pichana Este and San Roque, with a combined production of around 50,000boepd [barrels of oil equivalent per day] in TotalEnergies share in 2024. This transaction allows us to unlock value from part of our portfolio, while focusing on the development of our core assets in the Neuquén Basin and in the offshore of Tierra del Fuego.' In related news, TotalEnergies is reportedly making progress at its $20bn liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in northern Mozambique. Preliminary site preparations have begun, marking a significant step towards the project's resumption. It had been suspended since 2021 due to escalating militant attacks in the region, which have been linked to the Islamic State. As of early July 2025, TotalEnergies had issued a notice to its contractors to proceed with site preparations, signalling the recommencement of work on the LNG project. Rate cuts could be weeks away. Here's how much history says stocks could rise as the Fed eases policy.

Investors expect the Fed to resume rate cuts next month. Historically, rate cuts have led to strong S&P 500 gains, but there have been exceptions. Here's what history says about how the market behaves once rate cuts start back up. After a weak few months of job growth, investors are banking on rate cuts from the Federal Reserve at their September meeting, and history shows cuts could be like rocket fuel for stocks in the months that follow. LPL Financial recently conducted an analysis of how stocks have performed from the first rate cut in a rate-reduction cycle until the eventual start of a new hiking cycle. On average, the S&P 500 has returned 30.3% during the nine periods when rates have been on the decline since 1974. The median return during those periods was 13.3%. Returns have been positive in six of those nine cycles. "Using history and prior Fed cutting cycles as a guide, some upside potential may remain for the second half of 2025," Jeff Buchbinder, LPL's chief equity strategist, said in the August 5 report. "But of course, past performance does not guarantee future results, and a new tariff regime not seen since the 1930s could slow earnings growth and fuel volatility." The largest market surges came in the lead up to the dot-com bubble, when the S&P 500 rose 161% from 1995 to 1999, the analysis showed. Other big gains included 62.8% from 1984 to 1993, and 38.2% from 2019 to 2021. But rate cuts aren't always a tailwind, especially during recessionary periods where the Fed acts too late. The market fell 23.5% during the 2007-2009 rate-cutting cycle, and from 2001-2004, the S&P 500 dropped 9.6%. This time around, Buchbinder said it's not a sure thing that rate cuts will be a boon for stocks, with ebullient investor sentiment having pushed up the market to new highs despite uncertainty remaining about the health of the economy. The market has also risen 12% already since the Fed's first cut of the cycle last September. "The delayed effects of trade policy are likely to weigh on the economy in the second half, leading to weaker labor market demand," Buchbinder wrote. "Recent market complacency toward trade policy and an economic narrative dependent upon strong economic data has caught our attention in recent weeks as a potential point of weakness." It's also not a guarantee the Fed continues to ease policy in the months ahead. Economists at Morgan Stanley and Bank of America both see the central bank keeping rates steady for the rest of 2025 despite CME FedWatch data showing investors pricing in 93.2% odds that the Fed cuts in next month. Given the apparent heightened levels of risk at the moment, Buchbinder said a conservative approach could be the best way forward in the near term. The firm likes growth stocks, large caps, and the financials and communication services sectors, he said. "Bottom line, investors may be well served by bracing for occasional bouts of volatility given how much optimism is currently reflected in equity prices," Buchbinder said. The firm's short-term asset allocation committee "advises against increasing portfolio risk beyond benchmark targets currently and continues to monitor tariff negotiations, economic data, earnings, the bond market, and various technical indicators to identify a potentially more attractive entry point to add equities on weakness," he added. Halliburton to support NEP's CCS project in UK

Halliburton has secured a contract for the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) carbon capture and storage (CCS) system, part of the East Coast Cluster (ECC) in north-east England. Under this contract, the company will deliver completions and downhole monitoring services. The equipment necessary for the CCS project will be primarily manufactured at Halliburton's UK completion manufacturing facility in Arbroath, Scotland. This facility has been instrumental in backing North Sea operations for more than five decades, offering manufacturing capabilities and on-site product development and testing resources. Halliburton Europe, Eurasia and sub-Saharan Africa senior vice-president Jean-Marc Lopez said: 'Halliburton is pleased to develop and deliver innovative well completions and monitoring solutions for this groundbreaking carbon storage project. 'This project allows expansion of our completions activity and showcases Halliburton's leadership in CCS projects. We look forward to the opportunity to deliver our services to support the NEP project.' The NEP infrastructure is engineered to oversee a CO₂ collection network, onshore compression facilities, a 145-km offshore pipeline, and subsea injection and monitoring systems for the Endurance saline aquifer. It is situated roughly 1,000m beneath the sea floor. The system aims to transport and permanently store up to an initial four million tonnes per annum of CO₂. NEP, established in 2020 as the ECC's CO₂ transportation and storage provider, is a joint venture (JV) comprising Equinor, bp and TotalEnergies. The JV will manage the transport and storage of CO₂ emissions from the industrial clusters of Teesside and Humber. Earlier in the year, Halliburton also secured a five-year contract with Repsol Resources UK to improve the full well life cycle at Repsol's platform assets in the UK North Sea. "Halliburton to support NEP's CCS project in UK" was originally created and published by Offshore Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
