Bernard Kerik, who led NYPD on 9/11 before prison and pardon, dies aged 69
Bernard Kerik, who served as New York City's police commissioner on during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and later pleaded guilty to tax fraud before being pardoned, has died. He was 69. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Kash Patel said that Kerik's death Thursday came after an unspecified 'private battle with illness'. Rudy Giuliani, the Republican former city mayor, who tapped Kerik as a bodyguard for his 1993 mayoral campaign and later appointed him to lead the NYPD, reflected on their long history on his podcast on Thursday. 'We've been together since the beginning. He's like my brother,' Giuliani, also the troubled former lawyer for Donald Trump, said through tears. 'I was a better man for having known Bernie. I certainly was a braver and stronger man.' The current New York City mayor, Eric Adams, a Democrat and also a former NYPD officer, said he'd visited Kerik, his 'friend of nearly 30 years', at a hospital earlier in the day. Kerik, an Army veteran, was hailed as a hero after the 9/11 attack and eventually nominated to head the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), before a dramatic fall from grace that ended with him behind bars. He served nearly four years in prison after pleading guilty in 2009 to tax fraud, making false statements and other charges. The charges stemmed partially from apartment renovations he received from a construction firm that authorities say wanted Kerik to convince New York officials it had no links to organized crime. During Kerik's sentencing, the judge noted that he committed some of the crimes while serving as 'the chief law enforcement officer for the biggest and grandest city this nation has'. Trump pardoned Kerik during a 2020 clemency blitz. Kerik was one of the guests feting Trump after his first federal court appearance in Florida in a case related to his handling of classified documents. Kerik grew up in Paterson, New Jersey, where he dropped out of the troubled Eastside high school later depicted in the 1989 film Lean on Me. He joined the Army, where he became a military policeman stationed in South Korea. He joined the NYPD in the late 1980s and was appointed in the 1990s to run New York's long-troubled jail system, including the city's notorious Riker's Island complex. Kerik was appointed by Giuliani to serve as police commissioner in 2000..

Lost & Marvel star Evangeline Lilly shows off bloodied face after horror fall and hospital dash
A NOUGHTIES television star has shown off her bloodied and bruised face after enduring a horrific fall. Evangeline Lilly, 45, who shot to fame as Kate Austen in the ABC drama series Lost, was at the beach when she suffered a fall. 5 5 5 The Ant-Man star revealed her accident and subsequent hospital dash when she uploaded a post onto her Instagram page on Friday. Sharing a slew of snaps where she looked blooded and bruised, Evangeline told her fans how she had fainted while enjoying a day at the beach. Fainting and falling face-first into a boulder, Evangeline - who is known for her work in Marvel movies - was then rushed to hospital. Alongside the selection of graphic snaps showcasing her injuries, the TV actress revealed all. "I fainted at the beach. And fell face first into a boulder," she explained. She continued: "At the hospital, the nurses and doctor went straight into action, more determined to find the cause of my blackout than to stitch up the hole punctured into my face by the rock. "I smiled wryly at them. 'You won't find anything.' I said with a woozy voice..." she added. She then wrote more about the ordeal in a Substack post where she detailed "absent" and "fainting spells" since she was little. Evangeline even revealed how she was checked for epilepsy before the doctors settling for a diagnosis of hypoglycemia without doing any tests. "For a good chunk of my life, I went with that – hypoglycemia. It added up — my metabolism is through the roof and I metabolize sugars, particularly, with [shocking] efficiency," she explained, as per Us Weekly. The actress then said that the cause of her blackouts remain a mystery. She went on: "I have come to believe that this 'checking out' is a result of my little soul reaching her limit of what she feels she can cope with in this life, and she 'leaves the building,' so to speak." Evangeline later penned: "That when she has had enough, when the pain becomes too great, the stresses beyond overwhelming, the shattered idealism crushing, my soul exits my body and returns to pure spirit." Fans flocked to the Instagram post, which promoted her full Substack post, to share their well wishes with Evangeline. "Oh my goodness Evangeline! I am sending you all of the healing energy in the world. Take it easy! We're all here for you," penned one. Another added: "Thank you so much for talking about this. Thinking of you." And a third wrote: "Hope you're feeling better and heal up quickly inside and out." Underneath the post, Lilly penned: "Thank you all for your beautiful well wishes." Evangeline's hospital dash and health update comes after she announced she was retiring from acting. Last year, after 20 years on screen, Evangeline said: "I am so filled with joy and contentment today as I live out my vision. "Praise God, I feel so grateful for my blessings. Stepping away from what seems like the obvious choice (wealth and fame) can feel scary at times, but stepping into your dharma replaces the fear with fulfillment." She then added: "I might return to Hollywood one day, but, for now, this is where I belong. "A new season has arrived, and I AM I AM HAPPY." 5 5

Diddy trial latest: Case to resume with testimony from former assistant 'Mia'
The sex-trafficking trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs will continue to hear evidence on Friday from the second of his alleged victims, a former assistant called 'Mia'. Follow the latest from the trial, and catch up on what's happened so far, below. 13:11:01 A reminder of the charges While we wait for court to start again today, here's a reminder of the five felony charges faced by Sean "Diddy" Combs: Racketeering conspiracy; Two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; Two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. The rapper was initially charged with three offences - racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Two extra counts - one each of sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution - were added earlier in April. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges. What the charges mean Racketeering broadly means engaging in an illegal scheme or enterprise, and the charge falls under the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act (RICO) in the US. According to the US justice department's definition of RICO statute, it is also illegal to "conspire to violate" the laws. The prosecution alleges that between 2008 and 2024, Combs "led a racketeering conspiracy that engaged in sex trafficking, forced labour, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice, among other crimes". 13:00:01 We're back with our live coverage Welcome back to our coverage of the trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs. The rapper faces five felony charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. He denies all charges. Today will be day 13 of the trial. Yesterday, we heard from Diddy's former stylist Deonte Nash and "Mia", the rapper's second alleged victim after his former partner Cassie. Mia, who is giving evidence under a pseudonym, worked as an assistant to the rapper for several years. She told the court she witnessed Combs being violent towards Cassie. She also spoke about her experiences of allegedly being sexually assaulted by her former boss. The trial will resume at 1.30pm today UK time with more evidence from Mia. In the meantime, you can catch up with what we heard in court yesterday below... 22:41:35 What you need to know after day 12 of Diddy's trial - scroll down to catch up That's our live coverage finished for the day. Earlier, we heard the end of stylist Deonte Nash's testimony before "Mia", the second alleged victim after Cassie, took the stand. Mia, who is giving evidence under a pseudonym, worked for Sean "Diddy" Combs for several years. She told the court she witnessed Combs being violent towards Cassie on several occasions, before detailing her own experiences with her former boss. If you're just checking in, here is a recap of today's testimony: Mia told the court working for Combs was "chaotic" and toxic, with extreme highs and lows; Calling him "Puff" throughout her testimony, she said during her time working for him he "threw things at me, threw me against the wall, threw me in the pool"; She claimed she had a physical breakdown after being forced to work for five days without sleep and that she wasn't allowed to leave his homes without permission; Mia said she saw Diddy being violent or threatening towards Cassie on several occasions, including at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012, during a party at Prince's house, and on a trip to a private island in Turks and Caicos; She also said Diddy seemed 'heartbroken' over Cassie's brief relationship with fellow rapper Kid Cudi; Mia told the court about setting up and cleaning hotel rooms used by Diddy, saying they could be covered in substances including candle wax, water and even blood; She claimed Combs once pressured her into taking ketamine, and described incidents when he allegedly slammed a door on her arm and threw spaghetti at her; She alleged she was first sexually assaulted by her then boss after working for him for just a few months, and that subsequent alleged attacks made her feel "like trash"; The court heard she had never told anyone of the alleged attacks until the government's investigation in this case. "I thought I was going to die with this," she said... "I thought I would never have to tell anyone because it's the most shameful thing of my life"; Earlier on in the day, stylist Deonte Nash continued his evidence, which started on Wednesday; Under cross-examination he was asked why he did not mention details about alleged abuse of Cassie to investigators, when he had said it in court - but said he only answered the questions he was asked. Court resumes tomorrow at 1.30pm UK time - we'll see you back here then. 21:12:00 Court finishes for the day - and defence says its case may take longer than expected After an hour extra today, the jury has now been dismissed. Marc Agnifilo, one of the defence lawyers for Sean "Diddy" Combs, has an issue to raise with Judge Arun Subramanian. The prosecution earlier this week said its case may take five weeks rather than six - but Agnifilo says now that this doesn't necessarily mean the trial will end sooner than expected. Prosecutors last night sent details of changes to their case, he says, which in turn may impact the defence's case and make it longer. The trial was originally slated to take about eight weeks in total, ending around 4 July. 21:05:59 'The most traumatising thing that's ever happened to me,' alleged victim tells court Mia tells the court she didn't think it was an option to go to police about the alleged sexual assaults by Sean "Diddy" Combs. Asked about an interaction she had with a police officer related to Combs, she tells the court she was pulled over while driving in LA on her way to see him. She says she mentioned his name and the officer didn't believe her at first, but when she showed her her phone they "had a whole conversation" and she let her off without a ticket. She recalls another time driving with Combs when they were pulled over. When officers realised it was him, they let them go, she says. Mia tells the court that the first time she told anyone about the alleged sexual assaults by Combs was when she spoke with government investigators. "I thought I would never have to tell anyone because it's the most shameful thing of my life," she says. Prosecutor Madison Smyser asks why she is speaking out now. "Because I have to tell the truth," she replies. Asked if she wanted to talk about the alleged sexual assaults today, she tells the court: "Absolutely not. It's the most traumatising, worst thing that's ever happened to me." 20:57:18 'I was going to die with this': Mia sobs as she tells court she kept alleged assaults secret Mia tells the court she could not say no to Sean "Diddy" Combs, her former boss. "I couldn't tell him 'no' about a sandwich. I couldn't tell him 'no' about anything," she says. She tells the court she was scared of being fired and never working in the industry again if she made a fuss. "I knew his power. And his control. I didn't want to lose everything that I worked so hard for." Mia says she also feared being attacked and was "always" worried about being physically hurt by Combs. "I didn't want to die or get hurt." She says she felt "desperate", "terrified and trapped", and worried it was her fault somehow. Combs threatened to tell Cassie she had "something to do with it" if she spoke out, she says. Becoming very emotional, Mia whispers and sobs as she says she never told anyone about the alleged sexual assaults at the time. "I was going to die with this," she says. "I didn't want anyone to know ever." She tells the court again that she was worried about being fired or "punished", and about her reputation as well. "I would have lost everything." She also says she thought no one would believe her. 20:46:06 'I always thought this was the last time,' Mia says of alleged sexual assaults by Diddy Alleged victim Mia is continuing telling the court about alleged sexual assaults by Sean "Diddy" Combs, her former boss. She recalls the hip-hop star trying to push her into a bathroom during a flight on a private jet, and says she felt "helpless", despite there being other people on the flight. She says she does not remember what happened in the bathroom, and replies "no" when prosecutor Madison Smyser asks if she ever initiated physical contact with Combs. She says "no" again when asked if she wanted to have sex with him. Mia says there was "no pattern" to the alleged sexual assaults, other than that they would not happen when Cassie was around. She says there was no indication Combs was on drugs during the incidents. "I always thought this was the last time," she said. "Next time I would somehow be more prepared. I had to get right back to work, there was so much going on." 20:36:52 Mia tells court she felt 'like trash' as she details alleged sexual assaults by Diddy Mia, a former employee of Diddy's, who is testifying under a pseudonym, tells the court there were other times he made her feel uncomfortable sexually. She recalls one occasion at the rapper's apartment in New York, saying he leaned over her to look at a computer screen "in an uncomfortable way". She says she did not know how to behave and didn't want to make a big deal out of it, so made an excuse about needing to go to the toilet. She then left the apartment, she says, and wondered whether it had been in her head. Prosecutor Madison Smyser then asks about subsequent alleged sexual assaults. Mia tells the court there was an incident at one of Combs's homes in LA in 2009 or 2010. She was asleep, she says, and woke up to find Combs on top of her. He told her to be quiet, she tells the court. "I just froze." Asked if she wanted to have sex with Mr Combs, Mia is tearful as she replies, "no", and says it was "very quick". She also recalls an alleged assault in a closet, telling the court Combs forced her to perform a sex act. "How did you feel?" Smyser asks her. "Like trash," she replies. Asked if she wanted to perform the sex act, she again says "no", and adds that it was "really fast". Mia alleges there were other times Combs sexually assaulted her but she doesn't remember the specific details. But she tells jurors she does remember "a horrible dark feeling in my stomach". 20:22:04 Diddy 'sexually assaulted Mia in hotel penthouse' after vodka shots, court hears Prosecutor Madison Smyser is now asking Mia, a former employee of Sean "Diddy" Combs, if she ever engaged in sexual activity with him. She says she didn't. Mia then struggles to speak as the prosecutor asks when she was sexually assaulted by Combs – which she alleged at the start of her testimony earlier today. She says she is not sure of dates but confirms it happened sporadically when she was employed by the hip-hop mogul, and when Cassie, his then girlfriend, was not around. The first alleged sexual assault took place in a hotel, Mia says, after she had been working for him for a few months. They were in a penthouse, in the kitchen, and at some point Combs asked others there to clear the room, leaving just the two of them. He told her she was doing a good job and poured vodka shots to celebrate his birthday, she tells the court. Mia says she drank three and felt "they hit me kind of hard". Afterwards, he got closer as they were talking, she recalls. Combs kissed her and put his hand up her dress, she alleges. Asked if she wanted him to do this, she replies: "No." Smyser asks if she was able to say no, and she tells her: "I was shocked." Mia continues, saying her next memory is of sitting on a chair and the sun was coming up. She tells the court what she was thinking – that "he was a powerful person, he was the boss". She says she was clothed when she woke up but cannot remember how she got to the room from the kitchen.
