Brewers hold off Dodgers again for 9th straight win

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freddy Peralta won his seventh straight start, Isaac Collins and Joey Ortiz homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers held off the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 on Saturday night to extend their win streak to a season-best nine.
Shohei Ohtani hit his National League-leading 33rd homer and drove in three runs for the Dodgers. Tommy Edman and Miguel Rojas both went deep in the eighth to pull the NL West leaders to 8-7.
But then Ohtani's flyball died on the warning track to end the eighth, and Trevor Megill threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 23rd save as Los Angeles lost for the ninth time in 11 games.
Milwaukee improved to 5-0 against the defending World Series champions this year, including a three-game sweep at home last week.
Peralta (12-4) wasn't particularly sharp, giving up four runs and five hits in five innings as his ERA rose from 2.66 to 2.85. But the Brewers tacked on three insurance runs to maintain the lead after the All-Star right-hander exited.
After the teams traded four-run rallies in the third, the Brewers took a 5-4 lead on Collins' 363-foot homer over the short right-field wall in the fourth. They made it 6-4 on Caleb Durbin's RBI double in the sixth.
The Dodgers pulled to 6-5 in the sixth when Edman snapped an 0-for-29 skid with a single and Ohtani sliced an RBI single to left.
Milwaukee pushed it to 7-5 in the seventh when Andrew Vaughn hit a two-out RBI single, and 8-5 in the eighth on Ortiz's homer.
Los Angeles starter Emmet Sheehan (1-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in three-plus innings.
Key moment
Peralta prevented an even bigger rally in the third when, with four runs in, a runner on third and no outs, he struck out Andy Pages, got Michael Conforto to ground out to shortstop with the infield in and retired Edman on a fly to left.
Key stat
The Dodgers were hitting .157 with four runs in four-plus games against the Brewers this season before scoring four times in the third.
Up next
Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (4-1, 3.88 ERA) faces Brewers lefty Jose Quintana (6-3, 3.28) in Sunday's series finale.

Galt little league team earns trip to Cal Ripken World Series, seeks community help to get there

The eight-and-under Galt all-stars baseball team is getting ready to slide into the Cal Ripken World Series next month all the way in New Jersey. Everyone is pitching in to try and get the Galt All-Stars to the eight under Cal Ripken World Series in New Jersey. This is only the second time in Galt's sports history that a team is headed to the big stage, and parents and coaches are calling on the community to get them there. "Last year we got beat," said Coach Richard Savage. "I didn't think we were regional champs, I hoped that we would be competitive." Savage is using his own personal baseball diamond to teach his all-stars, now under eight regional champions. "But in the end, whoever has their best game on their best day ends up winning, and that's us," Savage said. "Couple coaches joked about it on Sunday, and on Monday, I had an invitation." An invitation to the World Series as Pacific Southwest Regional Champions. "A lot of 'em didn't know there was such thing as world series. They thought that was it, we did it," he said. "We threw it out to the parents and they said all in, and they said all in. Most of 'em said it's a once-in-a-lifetime, and we said all in." A team of 12 is getting the chance to put Galt on the map. "There's a team from China, across the pond, a team from Mexico, it's a world series," he said. But now there's the catch of paying to get to New Jersey. "Nobody thought last week we'd be spending four grand to fly across the country," Savage said. "We all know we're going to have to come out of pocket. We're not asking for a free ride, we just need some help." Savage and coaches calling for the community to pinch hit their hopes and get them to play ball. "Cross country just to play baseball is going to be huge for them," he said. "They fight back, never give up, that's what's great about this group of 8-year-olds." Savage said there will be a fundraising event on Thursday in Galt where people can come out and support the team to make their field of dreams become a reality. Savage said there will be a fundraising event on Friday at Back Alleys in Galt, where people can come out and support the team to make their field of dreams become a reality. They also have an online fundraiser.

Angels star Mike Trout joins the 1,000-RBI club with a 'big-time blast'

Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — One swing of the bat was more than enough for Mike Trout to deliver a reminder about his impact on baseball. The Angels star hit a massive homer to center field on Sunday to move past 1,000 RBIs in his career, a two-run shot that helped Los Angeles beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1. 'It takes your teammates to get on base, and after the game, that was one of the things I pointed out,' Trout said of a clubhouse toast that included whiskey and words of appreciation. 'None of this is possible without my teammates. It's been fun.' Now with 1,001 RBIs, another Trout milestone is around the corner as the three-time American League MVP reached 397 home runs with his fifth-inning drive that traveled an estimated 443 feet. 'He couldn't have drawn it up any better, putting a big-time blast like that to center field,' said Jo Adell, Trout's successor in center. 'I'm honored to be able to start my career here and play with him and just see the evolution of him.' Trout has struggled to stay on the field in recent years, with a bone bruise in his left knee forcing him to miss a month this year. He has played designated hitter since his return after starting the season in right field. He was batting just .200 with one home run in nine games since the All-Star break, but he showed Sunday he can still deliver after 1,598 games over 15 seasons. 'Every time we talk about Mike, even 75 percent of Mike is better than most people who have ever played the game,' Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said. 'He's going to through ups and downs just like everybody else and his are more magnified because of who he is.' It was a day of exploits for the Angels' veterans as Kyle Hendricks picked up win No. 103 by allowing two hits over six-plus innings and Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 465th save. Trout has 19 homers, his most since hitting 40 in 2022. He also joined Garrett Anderson and Tim Salmon as the only players to record their first 1,000 RBIs exclusively with the Angels. 'When guys are here that long and what they mean to the club, it's pretty special to be in that group,' Trout said of Anderson and Salmon, who now work with the Angels' broadcast team. 'They had unbelievable careers in an Angels uniform and when you're in the same conversation with them, it's pretty special.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3
