Hermes in spotlight at Paris Fashion Week

Hermes designer Nadege Vanhee presented a fall/winter 2025 collection of glossy coats, dresses and trousers in dark-coloured leather on Saturday, showing the sleek styles on a dirt-covered runway in Paris, reported Reuters.
Held at the Garde Republicaine, the sprawling stables of the French capital's mounted gendarmes or police, the fashion house built a set with curved walls that resembled a Richard Serra sculpture – but were covered in brown felt.
Attendants raked the catwalk before the start of the show and the models strode out in riding boots, the toes stretched out into points, their silky hair bouncing.
They paraded skirts and micro shorts with tassels, a cropped jacket with quilted panels and long coats lined with felted wool, zippers running down the back – all of it in leather.
Extra layers came in the form of ribbed knit gloves that covered the arm and piles of sweaters worn like scarves around the neck and cinching outerwear.
Contrasting with the mostly all-black looks were a few styles in beige, a brown marbled pattern molded into a fitted dress and a coat and trouser ensemble in bright green leather.
Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham showed a line-up of sleek, monochrome looks featuring curled hems and collars for her fall/winter catwalk outing, held in a stripped down building in the centre of Paris.
Models marched steadily through the bare set in square-toed shoes – some flat, others with spiked heels – parading minimalist suits with long lapels that stretched down below the navel, tapered trousers, shoulder-baring dresses and long overcoats.
There were mini dresses, overcoats and suit jackets with striking, rolled-up hems, while sweaters and jackets had collars similarly curled up at the neck.
Long, fluid dresses were trim, snug at the waist, contrasting with an elegant, bulked-up leather coat in taupe, worn like a minidress. Completing the looks were thick, curvy glasses and roomy tote bags.
Paris Fashion Week, which brings together shows from some of the world's biggest brands, concludes on March 11.

First ever Birkin bag heads to auction at Sotheby's

The value of the prototype has not been disclosed. Photo: AFP The first-ever Birkin bag that was designed by French luxury brand Hermes for actress Jane Birkin is set to be sold at auction in Paris, with the piece of modern fashion history likely to spark a bidding frenzy. The Birkin has become a modern design icon that is so exclusive that Hermes only offers it to loyal clients, with prices starting at around $10,000. Auction house Sotheby's, which is handling the sale of the Birkin prototype in Paris on July 10, declined to specify a reserve price publicly and its value is hard to forecast. "The Original Birkin holds the potential to redefine records," Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's global handbag and fashion head, said in a statement. The previous record sale price for a handbag at auction was set by a highly customised Birkin in Hong Kong in 2017. The diamond-encrusted crocodile-skin Birkin 30 with white gold details fetched $510,000 at Christie's. The seller of the original Birkin is well-known Paris-based handbag collector and dealer Catherine Benier whose appointment-only boutique in the high-end 6th district of the capital has a cult following. Benier told The New York Times that the bag was the "jewel in my collection". It has changed hands twice since being put up for sale by Birkin at an auction in 1994 where the proceeds went to an AIDS charity, Sotheby's said. The birth of the Birkin bag has become a modern fashion legend. During a Paris-London flight, the singer and actress — who died in 2023 — complained to a fellow traveller about not being able to find a bag suited to her needs as a young mother. That fellow passenger happened to be Jean-Louis Dumas, then head of Hermes. The result of their conversation was a spacious tote with room for baby bottles, created in 1984 and named the Birkin. It is engraved with the initials JB and has several unique features, Sotheby's said, including closed metal rings, a non-detachable shoulder strap and a built-in nail clipper. Its condition "reflects the many years of use by the actress and singer," Sotheby's said. The prototype Birkin will be exhibited at Sotheby's in New York from June 6 to 12 before being put on show in the French capital before the sale. In addition to the Birkin bag, the Sotheby's "Fashion Icons" sale will feature runway pieces from designers including Christian Dior, John Galliano, Thierry Mugler and Alexander McQueen. Bidding will open online on June 26 and close on July 10.

Live content unites Netflix fans worldwide

Netflix continues to add more live content for viewers hungry for real-time entertainment, including the Tyson vs Paul boxing match, National Football League games and, most recently, the Tudum live fan event that showcased upcoming TV shows. "This is the first time we've done the show in this way, a live format," Shelly Gillyard, VP of Series Marketing for the US and Canada, told Reuters at the Netflix Tudum fan event last Saturday. "Previous years were on the ground fan activations," Gillyard added. Tudum is named after the sound that plays before each Netflix film and series. For Netflix, it was important to ensure that they were incorporating talent from all over the world for the global fan event. More than 100 Netflix stars and creators appeared in the show hosted by actor Sofia Carson, who starred in the airport thriller Carry On. The first two Tudum events took place in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2020 and in 2023. However, for 2025, it was relocated to Los Angeles, California. The 2020 Netflix Tudum in Brazil drew 50,000 people in four days and the post-COVID numbers for the 2023 Brazil Tudum were 35,000. Gillyard said the live event could take place somewhere else in the future and Netflix is focused less on where it is held and more on making it available globally. With major titles like Squid Game, Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Emily in Paris, combined with a performance by Lady Gaga, the streamer capitalised on fan interest. One of the largest draws for viewers was the premiere date announcements for Emmy award-winning series Stranger Things. The livestreamed event revealed that Stranger Things will have a fifth and final season split into three parts, with part one on November 26, 2025, part two on December 25, 2025 and the series finale on December 31, 2025.
