Justin Bieber hairline receding proves beauty standards hit men just as hard as women

Cosmopolitan22-05-2025

To many Justin Bieber fans, who screamed his name at concerts during the height of his powers, the singer will always be that dimpled kid with an impressive helmet of side-swept brown hair.
However, it's been 15 years since the release of his smash-hit single 'Baby', and Bieber is no longer a teeny-bop king. Now 31, he's married to model and Rhode Beauty founder, Hailey Baldwin, and is the father of a nine-month-old son, Jack Blues.
As he's grown up, Bieber's appearance, naturally, has changed – and new photos of the singer suggest that his once thick thatch of hair has thinned. And the internet has *feelings* about it.
The conversation on X (hardly the kindest corner of social media) quickly turned cruel, with some tweets amassing tens of thousands of likes for mocking the apparent change in Bieber's hairline and even suggesting baldness was symptomatic of bad character (and here was me thinking we'd moved past Victorian-era notions of looks dictating morality…).
This is regardless of the fact that two thirds of all men will experience some kind of hair loss by the time they're 35, and 85% of men will have noticeably thinner hair by their 50th birthday.
When we think of harmful and unrealistic beauty standards, our brains tend to immediately leap towards the expectations increasingly being piled on women to look Instagram-ready, and youthful, at all times. This cannot be denied. But that's not to say men don't have damaging tropes they feel forced to uphold either, which can be equally as dangerous.
And it's not just balding: a study attributed to Bumble (although doubt has been cast over this) found that 60% of women on dating apps are seeking a man over six foot tall, with only 15% open to dating men shorter than 5'8'. Meanwhile, an increasing number of men believe the only acceptable body shape is one that is super-toned and muscular, which has seen a supposed 'steroid boom' in the UK.
These expectations that men feel they're having placed on them (to be tall, muscular and with a full head of hair) could be a facet of what is fuelling conversations in an increasingly darker corner of the internet known as the manosphere. A place populated by men plagued with expectations they don't or can't fulfil, which could see them lured into a headspace where these insecurities are weaponised for nefarious means. See: Andrew Tate's version of masculinity being promoted as the 'only' acceptable one, to his millions of followers.
Of course, it's not anyone's sole responsibility (and it's certainly not down to women) to make men feel better about themselves, but we do need to be mindful that if we want a more level playing field when it comes to beauty standards and aging, isn't a more accepting attitude more beneficial all round? Tweets mocking Bieber do little to help the cause.
It would be naïve to pretend that women are not disproportionately criticised for daring to age or scrutinised for the way they look. But fascination with beauty routines and criticism of receding hairlines are both merely symptomatic of a culture that hits all genders hard, and which is increasingly looks-obsessed.
Attacking men for their hairline is merely reaching for low-hanging fruit; it's a low-blow likely to hit where it hurts. A Dove study found 44% of men are concerned about their hair, while the Belgravia Centre reports 81% are troubled by hair loss. It's little wonder that the rapidly growing hair-transplant industry is set to be worth $16.62 billion by 2032.
We're right to call out trolls that get up on their soapbox and share their (unwarranted and unwanted) opinions on women aging. And while it might sound pious, we also need to examine our own criticisms of men who are not immune to the ageing process.
It's easy to decry how we as women have been victims of age-shaming since the dawn of time, but that doesn't mean men are immune from the damaging nature of beauty standards. After all, there is plenty to criticise all manner of men about – from their often poor showing of allyship, to the ongoing plight of violence against women – but their receding hairlines or height needn't be one.

Billy Ray Cyrus' son Trace attacks his ‘washed–up' and ‘evil' dad for skipping grandma's funeral

Talk about an achy breaky heart. Billy Ray Cyrus' son, Trace Cyrus, attacked his country music star father in several scathing posts shared to Instagram on Tuesday. Trace, 36, slammed Billy Ray as 'washed-up' and 'pathetic' in the blistering online rant. He also denounced the 63-year-old musician for not attending his grandmother's funeral back in 2020. 8 Trace Cyrus attacked Billy Ray Cyrus in a scathing social media post shared to Instagram on Tuesday. Instagram / @tracecyrus 'This man is so hungry for fame it's pathetic,' Billy Ray's son began. 'He really flew to Italy for a fashion show but wouldn't come to LA for Mammie's funeral while he was still married to my mom,' Trace, who is also a musician, alleged. 'Even after his daughter got him a 60k private jet like he demanded then he still didn't come even after the plane was paid for.' Loretta Finley, Tish Cyrus' mother, passed away roughly two years before Tish and Billy Ray divorced in April 2022. Trace's tirade against his father didn't end there. 'You're the lamest man to ever walk planet earth,' Miley Cyrus' brother continued. 'Honestly embarrassed to ever have considered you my idol.' 8 Trace also denounced Billy Ray for not attending his grandmother's funeral back in 2020. Instagram/tracecyrus 8 Trace also made fun of his father's hair in a post shared to his Instagram Stories. Instagram/@tracecyrus 'The best thing to come from your downfall is it made me go into beast mode,' he added. 'I refuse to be a washed up, delusional, evil person when I'm old like you.' Trace ended his diatribe by telling Billy Ray to 'get right with God.' 'Christ is King. Get right with God,' he concluded the post. 'You need it.' 8 Trace returned to his Instagram Stories once again after someone commented that his post 'seems like a cry for help.' Instagram/tracecyrus Trace targeted the 'Busy Man' singer further in his Instagram Stories. 'Also why does he think that homeless hairstyle looks good?' he wrote. 'So weird.' WireImage 'No I'm past the point of even caring if I ever speak to him again,' the former Metro Station guitarist responded. 'I've surpassed him in every metric as a man on this planet.' 'There's nothing left to learn from him except his mistakes,' Trace concluded. 'I had hope at one point but I'm convinced he's finally a lost cause.' Billy Ray adopted Trace and Brandi, 38, when he married Tish in 1993. The former couple welcomed Miley, 32, in 1992, followed by the 'Wrecking Ball' superstar's siblings: Braison, 31, and Noah, 25. 8 Miley Cyrus opened up about her and her dad's relationship in a rare statement about her family last month. Popular TikTok star leaves US after being detained

LAS VEGAS -- LAS VEGAS (AP) — Khaby Lame, the world's most popular TikTok personality with millions of followers, has left the U.S. after being detained by immigration agents in Las Vegas for allegedly overstaying his visa. The Senegalese-Italian influencer, whose legal name is Seringe Khabane Lame, was detained Friday at Harry Reid International Airport but was allowed to leave the country without a deportation order, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed in a statement. Lame arrived in the U.S. on April 30 and 'overstayed the terms of his visa,' the ICE spokesperson said. The Associated Press sent a message seeking comment Tuesday to the email address listed on Lame's Instagram account. He has not publicly commented on his detainment. His detainment and voluntary departure from the U.S. comes amid President Donald Trump's escalating crackdown on immigration, including raids in Los Angeles that sparked days of protests against ICE, as the president tests the bounds of his executive authority. A voluntary departure — which was granted to Lame — allows those facing removal from the U.S. to avoid a deportation order on their immigration record, which could prevent them from being allowed back into the U.S. for up to a decade. The 25-year-old rose to international fame during the pandemic without ever saying a word in his videos, which would show him reacting to absurdly complicated 'life hacks." He has over 162 million followers on TikTok alone. The Senegal-born influencer moved to Italy when he was an infant with his working class parents and has Italian citizenship. His internet fame quickly evolved. He signed a multi-year partnership with designer brand Hugo Boss in 2022. In January, he was appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.

Dennis Lehane Roasts ‘Draft Dodger' Trump's $45 Million Birthday Parade as ‘Height of Performative Masculinity'

Novelist and 'Black Bird' creator Dennis Lehane went off script Tuesday to call out Donald Trump's $45 million military parade Saturday commemorating the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary — and, yes, the president's June 14 birthday. He called the spectacle 'the height of performative masculinity.' Speaking to TheWrap for his new Apple TV+ project, 'Smoke,' the acclaimed author ('Gone, Baby, Gone,' 'Mystic River,' 'Shutter Island') briefly weighed in on Trump's antics, calling him a draft dodger and even comparing the president to a 'whiny little bitch' character from the new series. 'I usually steer away from politics,' Lehane said, bringing up the topic himself, 'but let's just say, on one very simple issue, to be a draft dodger who's trying to throw yourself a military birthday parade is the height of performative masculinity. I don't even know where to go with that. We've literally met the death of irony.' Trump is rolling out a military parade on Saturday to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. army — and it also happens to fall on his 79th birthday. An Army spokesperson said that the parade is expected to cost upwards of $45 million. On Tuesday, amid reports that protests against the parade are being planned online, the Trump told White House reporters, 'And if there's any protester that wants to come out, they will be met with very big force.' Lehane's comments sprang out of a discussion of the tightly wound arson investigator Dave Gudsen in 'Smoke,' played by Taron Egerton, reuniting with the creator after 'Black Bird.' Lehane explained, 'Taron and I wanted to get at that with Dave. He's so unempathetic, and yet he's such a whiny little sentimental bitch when it comes to his own needs.' In the series, which premieres with its first two episodes June 27, Dave is frustrated by being assigned a female partner (Jurnee Smollett) he never asked for to track down two serial arsonists. 'Taron and I are both fascinated by performative masculinity. It's just an interesting phenomenon that we're starting to see the worst end result of right now. We're living in it,' Lehane continued. Dave also clashes with his apathetic teenage stepson, who's made it clear David will never live up to his own father. 'That's what Dave Gudsen represents in a lot of ways. When he says to his wife, 'The kid just needs to f–king man up.' And she says, 'Oh, we're here for some truth?'' 'Some people are always like that. The people who were always like, 'Why should I feel anything for anybody?' are always the whiniest bitches,' Lehane said. 'Smoke' premieres with two episodes on June 27 and airs new episodes Fridays. Check back later for TheWrap's full interview with Lehane.
