KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 13): After a Jalur Gemilang with the wrong number of stripes was posted on the Terengganu Umno Youth Facebook page, its chief, Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera, has apologised for the blunder.
In a video uploaded on Facebook last night, Tengku Haphiz said the mistake was made by a freelance designer who had been affected by recent flag-related incidents.
'For your information, the designer who created this poster was affected by the recent issue involving the inverted Jalur Gemilang, and coincidentally, his own oversight was unintentional,' he said.
Tenku Haphiz said that he said he would not defend the designer, and would leave the investigation of the matter to the authorities.
'I want to reiterate that we will not compromise on this matter. I take full responsibility as the Terengganu Umno Youth chief to apologise,' he said.
Yesterday, a design posted on the Terengganu Umno Youth Facebook page drew criticism after it featured a Jalur Gemilang with the wrong number of stripes in a campaign seeking justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir.
The post has since been taken down, and replaced with a corrected version.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh responded to the issue by saying that there was no hypocrisy on the matter.
'How we pushed for an investigation and heavy punishment for the man who flew the flag upside-down, we are also asking for the same for the individual responsible for making this poster,' he said.
The issue follows recent controversy that began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, came under scrutiny after a short video showed the Jalur Gemilang hanging upside down outside his shop.

In response, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh initially threatened to conduct a 'class' to teach the shopkeeper the proper way to display the national flag, should no legal action be taken by today
The following day, however, he cancelled plans for the 'flag class' after DAP announced it would sponsor and install a giant Jalur Gemilang at the shop, but said he would still attend to see if it was displayed correctly. — Malay Mail Jalur Gemilang Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera Terengganu Umno

Ipoh to launch awareness campaigns on Jalur Gemilang display, says Perak local govt exco

IPOH: Awareness and educational campaigns will be carried out to ensure the Jalur Gemilang is displayed properly, says Sandrea Ng. The Perak local government committee chairman said the government and its agencies have always encouraged the display of the national flag during the National Month celebration to foster patriotism. "There had been recent issues of the flag being displayed incorrectly. "We are taking note of this and will provide information through awareness and educational campaigns so the issue does not arise again," she told reporters after closing the Perak Pawsitive Initiative at the Red Crescent Hall here on Sunday (Aug 17). "It is a straightforward matter, but we need to be more careful when displaying our flag to avoid unnecessary disputes," she said. "The government, through the relevant authorities, will continue to emphasise the correct information, tips and reminders to be disseminated so that the public are properly informed and for the national month's celebrations to run smoothly," she added. Ng said it is not mandatory for business premises to display the Jalur Gemilang, but strongly encouraged them to do so. "At present, some premises have already put up the Jalur Gemilang, but these are not under the jurisdiction of local councils. "We are working with private organisations, assemblymen's service centres and local councils to give out the flags," she said.

Solve your conflict between yourselves, Takiyuddin tells Umno and DAP

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan criticised his DAP counterpart, Loke Siew Fook, for taking 'excessive, inappropriate actions', and potentially worsening the situation. PETALING JAYA : Sort out your squabble between yourselves without involving the police and public, a PAS leader has urged DAP and Umno over the Jalur Gemilang controversy. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the two parties had magnified the controversy through the reciprocal actions of both parties 'with their own reasons and motives'. Takiyuddin said they should not involve the police, who would be burdened with unnecessary workload, or the public, who would be drawn into unhealthy and unproductive discussions. 'This is especially so because the situation arose merely from the act of a single person who hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down, a matter which is already under police investigation,' he said. Takiyuddin said PAS has instructed its youth wing not to interfere in the matter. He was referring to DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook's directive to DAP Youth to lodge police reports across the country over a demonstration by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh near a hardware shop in Kepala Batas on Thursday. The protest was held after the shop owner mistakenly hoisted a Jalur Gemilang flag upside down, which led to public outrage when the video became viral. Takiyuddin criticised Loke, calling his actions 'excessive, inappropriate, and potentially worsening the situation'. He also called on both sides to respect and support the police investigation without adding unnecessary pressure, warning that failure to do so would risk making matters worse. 'An issue originally involving just one person will then spill over, drawing the wider public into a destructive cycle,' he said.

Unrealistic to cut ties with only Akmal, says DAP man

V Papparaidu urged DAP Youth leaders to keep calm as Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh is already under police investigation. PETALING JAYA : A member of the DAP leadership has played down calls for the party to sever ties with Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh over his actions in the Jalur Gemilang issue, but promises that the matter will be discussed by the top leadership. DAP central executive committee member V Papparaidu said it would be unrealistic to expect the party to cut ties with Akmal without affecting its wider relationship with Umno, which could hamper the stability of the unity government, of which Umno is a key partner. 'Political relationships are complex and interconnected, and any action we take must be carefully weighed so as not to jeopardise broader cooperation and stability,' he told FMT. Nonetheless, Papparaidu said he would ensure that the proposal, raised by the Penang and Negeri Sembilan DAP Youth, would be brought to the CEC. 'Every view from the grassroots is valuable, and it is important that such perspectives are given a proper platform. However, we always follow our secretary-general's guidance and advice to ensure our party's discipline is maintained at all times,' he said. He urged DAP Youth leaders to keep calm and be patient since Akmal was already under police investigation over a Facebook video concerning the flag issue, in which he allegedly made statements that could disrupt public peace. Akmal is under investigation for sedition and criminal intimidation over the video, which is related to a hardware shop owner in Penang who accidentally hung the Jalur Gemilang upside down. Akmal laughed off the threat to sever ties with him and dared DAP to do so, saying such a move would inadvertently mean ending its relationship with Umno. FMT has sought comment from DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook. Papparaidu said all politicians should let the police take the lead on the issue. He, nonetheless, took a swipe at Akmal for warning about taking things into his own hands if no punitive action is taken on the hardware shop owner. 'Akmal has attempted to pressure the police by setting an arbitrary time frame for action, which can be interpreted as a threat against the authorities. 'It is important that we continue to uphold the rule of law, respect due process, and maintain discipline in our political actions,' said Papparaidu, who is a Selangor executive councillor.
