Where did Lidl get its name?
Lidl was set up in Germany in 1930 when Josef Schwarz became a partner in a company called Südfrüchte Großhandlung Lidl & Co.
This had been established by Anton Lidl since at least 1858 under the name A.Lidl & Cie, specialising in the sale of exotic fruits.
Schwarz renamed the company Lidl & Schwarz KG and expanded into a food wholesaler.
In 1977, under his son Dieter Schwarz, the Schwarz Group began to focus on discount markets and larger supermarkets.
Dieter wasn't keen on using his own name for this, as the name Schwarz-Markt translates to 'black market'.

When he discovered a newspaper article about a painter and retired schoolteacher Ludwig Lidl, he bought the rights to the name from him for 1,000 German marks.
From there, the Lidl name was used, and it expanded into many countries over time.

Lidl's British workers get fifth pay rise in two years
LONDON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The British arm of German discount supermarket Lidl is to give its 28,000 hourly paid workers a fifth pay rise in two years, matching the increased level offered by rival Aldi, it said on Friday. The Bank of England is keeping a close eye on wage settlements as it assesses whether to lower interest rates further. Official data published on Tuesday showed Britain's jobs market weakened again, with payrolls falling for a sixth month and vacancies dropping further. However, wage growth stayed strong, underscoring why the BoE is so cautious about cutting interest rates. The latest increase from Lidl GB, which trades from 980 stores, will from September 1 see entry-level pay rise from 12.75 pounds ($17.32) an hour to 13 pounds nationally, rising to 13.95 pounds with length of service. Workers in London will see higher rates. Last month, Aldi UK said it would pay store assistants at least 13 pounds an hour from September 1. Industry leader Tesco (TSCO.L), opens new tab will pay a minimum of 12.64 pounds an hour from the same date. Britain's government-mandated main minimum wage is currently 12.21 pounds an hour. Earlier this month, the body which effectively sets the rate said it will probably need to rise to 12.71 pounds next year to keep up with the government's goal for it to match two-thirds of median earnings. Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons may have to shut large stores, as the Government plots to raise rates for businesses with properties that are worth more than £500,000. The changes would put several Tesco stores at risk, as well as 30 of Morrisons' 500 sites. Sources also revealed that 90 per cent of around 600 Asda stores would be hurt by the introduction of the increases. The new rates will not impact Aldi and Lidl, however, as they operate smaller premises. The Government is bringing in the rate increases to provide extra funding to smaller retailers and hospitality businesses. Tim Martin, boss of pub chain Wetherspoons, blasted the tax raid last month and warned it could lead to fewer boozers on high streets. The planned tax raid comes after Chancellor Rachel Reeves had already hit businesses with an increase in employer National Insurance contributions and the national minimum wage in April. LIDL PAY RISES LIDL is raising its store staff's wages to £13 an hour — joining rival Aldi as the UK's highest-paying supermarket. The basic rate, currently £12.75, will jump nationwide from September 1, rising to £13.95 with length of service. It marks Lidl's fifth pay rise in two years. The budget retailer increased hourly pay for 28,000 staff on April 1. The current national minimum wage of £12.21 could hit £12.86 next year.
