Taiwan tests sea drones as China keeps up military pressure
With Beijing sustaining military pressure on the island, Taiwan is increasing investment in aerial and maritime drones, which have been widely used in Russia's war in Ukraine to outfox traditional heavy weaponry.
China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to bring it under its control.
Twelve local and foreign companies took part in an uncrewed sea vehicle (USV) demonstration hosted by the government's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology in Yilan, southeast of Taipei.
It was an opportunity for 'potential clients such as the military and coast guard' to collect data from the drone manufacturers for future mass production, the institute said in a statement.
Taiwanese shipbuilder Lungteh's Black Tide sea drone, which is designed to operate in 'contested environments,' was one of three USVs put through its paces.
With a top speed of more than 43 knots (80 kilometres per hour; 50 miles per hour), the Black Tide can be used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and 'one-way strike,' according to the company.
Meanwhile, Carbon-Based Technology Inc.'s 'stealth' USV could carry bombs and was cheap enough to conduct 'sacrificial' missions, said company director Stacy Yu after the drone was tested.
While President Lai Ching-te has pledged to make Taiwan 'the Asian hub' for drone production, there have been challenges to ramping up the island's output.
Taiwan's annual production capacity for aerial drones is between 8,000 to 10,000 units—well below its 2028 target of 180,000 units, the Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology (DSET) said in a report on Monday.
High manufacturing costs from using non-China components make it 'difficult for Taiwanese products to compete with Chinese-made products in the commercial market,' DSET analysts said.
Limited domestic orders and a scarcity of foreign government contracts are also impeding 'further scaling' of production, the report said.

Pop Mart is pledging to increase the supply of the dolls, which have sold out in stores around the world. Its CEO Wang Ning, in an interview with Chinese state media last month, said sales of Labubu will surpass 10 million units per day from September this year. Pop Mart classifies Labubu under its "The Monsters" intellectual property (IP) characters. It said on Tuesday that "The Monsters" raked in 4.81 billion yuan ($669.88 million) in the first half, accounting for 34.7% of total revenue. Four other IPs earned over 1 billion yuan during the period, including "Molly" and "Crybaby", it added. The company now has 571 stores - 40 of which it opened in the first half of this year - as well as 2,597 automated robot shops across 18 countries and regions, it added.

China's top diplomat to visit Pakistan on Thursday for strategic dialogue amid regional tensions
ISLAMABAD: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Islamabad on Thursday for the sixth Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue to explore ways of further deepening the bilateral strategic partnership, the foreign office in Islamabad said in a statement on Tuesday. The two allies have a longstanding relationship encompassing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), close defense and security ties and frequent diplomatic coordination. The visit comes just months after a brief but intense military standoff between India and Pakistan in May, during which Islamabad deployed Chinese-made fighter jets and missiles. India alleged that Beijing had actively supported Pakistan's military response. Institutionalized in 2017, the Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue provides a platform for high-level engagement on regional developments, reaffirmation of shared interests and coordination on multilateral issues. 'On the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, H.E. Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Wang Yi is visiting Islamabad for co-chairing the 6th Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue on August 21, 2025,' the foreign office said. The announcement comes just a day after Pakistan and China held bilateral consultations on arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament in Beijing. According to a separate statement, the foreign office said the two sides engaged in a comprehensive exchange of views on issues related to global and regional peace and security. 'They also reviewed the situation in South Asia, with particular emphasis on the challenges to security and strategic stability,' it added. Wang is currently in India, where he arrived on Monday and is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on the disputed Himalayan border. The two countries have witnessed military tensions along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh since 2020. Media reports suggest discussions may focus on reducing troop deployments and partially resuming cross-border trade. |The regional diplomacy comes amid growing friction between New Delhi and Washington, after US President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on India. Japan's defense minister visits Turkiye for talks on defense cooperation, drones
ANKARA: Japan's defense minister will hold talks in Turkiye on Tuesday on defense industry cooperation, including the possible supply of Turkish-made drones, as Tokyo expands the role of unmanned systems in its armed forces, a diplomatic source said. Gen Nakatani is the first Japanese defense minister to make such an official trip to Turkiye, a NATO member country that is keen to expand its economic and other ties beyond Europe and the Middle East. Turkiye and Japan are both US allies. Gen and Turkiye's Defense Minister Yasar Guler are expected to 'discuss ways to expand cooperation on defense equipment and technology and exchange views on regional developments,' the diplomatic source in Ankara said. They also aim to increase contacts between the Turkish Armed Forces and Japan's Self-Defense Forces at unit level, the source added. Gem is also scheduled to visit Istanbul on Wednesday. Turkish and Japanese defense ministries did not immediately respond to requests for comment. During the visit, Nakatani will tour Turkish defense companies and facilities including Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS), navy shipyards and drone maker Baykar, an industry source said. Turkiye-backed firms have supplied drones to several countries, including Ukraine, while Japan is preparing to expand the use of unmanned aerial vehicles across its ground, air and naval forces. Japan is considering Turkish drones among potential options as part of this effort, the diplomatic source said. Turkiye and Japan have both condemned Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, though Ankara has maintained cordial relations with Moscow and has not joined Western economic sanctions against it. Gem's visit to Turkiye is part of a regional tour from August 17–22 that also includes stops in Djibouti and Jordan.
