West Ham's Paqueta cleared of alleged betting breaches by FA

CNA31-07-2025
LONDON :West Ham United's Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of four alleged breaches of betting rules after an independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Football Association said on Thursday.
Last year, the 27-year-old was charged with deliberately seeking to receive a booking during four Premier League games in 2022 and 2023.
The FA said it was alleged that Paqueta sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in those matches by deliberately trying to get booked to manipulate the betting market for the benefit of others.
"Paqueta denied the charges against him, and a Regulatory Commission found them to be not proven following a hearing," the FA said in a statement.
The Brazilian has been charged with two breaches in relation to alleged failures to comply with his obligations to answer questions and provide information to the FA investigation.

Woakes may opt for rehab over surgery in race to be fit for Ashes

FILE PHOTO: Cricket - International Test Match Series - Fifth Test - England v India - Kia Oval, London, Britain - July 31, 2025 England's Chris Woakes reacts as he leaves the field after sustaining an injury Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs/File Photo England all-rounder Chris Woakes said rehabilitation is a risk he is willing to take to be fit for the Ashes rather than undergoing surgery on the shoulder injury he sustained during last week's fifth test loss to India. The 36-year-old Woakes is awaiting scan results after suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder on the opening day of the see-saw test at The Oval when he landed awkwardly trying to save a boundary. Judging by the extent of the damage his options would be either surgery or rehabilitation to strengthen the shoulder. The first Ashes test begins in Perth on November 21. "I suppose... there will be a chance of a re-occurrence, but that could be a risk that you're just willing to take," Woakes told BBC Sport on Friday. "From what I've heard from physios and specialists is that the rehab of a surgery option would be closer to three to four months. That's obviously touching on the Ashes and Australia so it makes it tricky. "From a rehab point of view you can probably get it strong again within eight weeks. So that could be an option, but again obviously still waiting to get the full report on it." Although ruled out of the remainder of the fifth test, he returned to bat on the final morning with his left arm strapped in a sling as England pushed for a series win. Woakes entered at number 11 with 17 runs still needed, he did not face a ball but ran four before Gus Atkinson was bowled, leaving India to seal a six-run victory to level the series 2-2 on Monday. Woakes received praise for his bravery, though he downplayed it by saying anyone else in the dressing room would have done the same. "In my eyes it was just business as usual... in that moment it was to go out there and try and find a way with Gus at the other end to try and get us over the line," he added. "Unfortunately, it didn't happen but I'm grateful and thankful that I put up the fight and tried to do it for the team." REUTERS

MANCHESTER, England - Manchester United's renovated training base features smart urinals that measure a player's level of hydration, dry flotation tanks, an underwater treadmill, a padel court, a Formula 1 simulator, and even a barber shop. United opened the doors on Aug 8 to the £50 million (S$86 million) redevelopment of their men's first team building at the Carrington Training Complex, a week before the Premier League season kicks off. Redesigned with input from players and staff, with ideas borrowed from the NFL's Los Angeles Rams and the England team base at St George's Park, among others, the state-of-the-art training hub opened just as manager Ruben Amorim and his squad returned following their pre-season tour of the United States. 'All credit to Sir Jim (Ratcliffe, United's co-owner) and his team, I think they did a unbelievable job,' said United defender Diogo Dalot. 'I think finally we're getting to a level where this club deserves and now it's up to us on the pitch.' Ratcliffe cut the ribbon to open the centre on Aug 8 alongside the players, Amorim, chief executive officer Omar Berrada, the team's former manager Alex Ferguson, and others. The year-long project was led by Mancunian architect Norman Foster and his firm Foster + Partners and financed with part of the £300 million capital injection into the club by United co-owner Ratcliffe in 2024. Collette Roche, who led the Carrington redevelopment project, said Ratcliffe was heavily involved in the process, helping decide everything from the number of windows to the fabric of the furniture. 'We took good reference points from the US and also in the UK, and I'm quite proud, because I think this step has put us ahead of the game as well,' Roche told reporters, following a media tour of the facility. 'It's not just a training ground. It's going to be the heart of the club, and we're bringing a lot of the staff over from Old Trafford. So there's a real nucleus now around football.' The facility is bathed in natural light in the aim of creating a positive environment, with everything the players and staff need under one roof. The medical and recovery facilities feature MRI and CT scans, a DEXA scan that measures everything from body fat to bone density, sleep pods, a heat and altitude chamber used for acclimatisation to different temperatures, humidity and oxygen levels, and hyperbaric and cryotherapy chambers. The players' dining lounge has floor to ceiling windows, a pool table and the F1 simulator. On the menu on Aug 8 was everything from grilled salmon to sushi to smoothie bowls. 'We've got a core of Bruno (Fernandes), Harry (Maguire), Tom (Heaton), Diogo, and I just asked what they wanted. And they gave me some great ideas,' said Roche. '(We asked) when is it performance? When do you need to chill? What's the best nutrition? How do they want to eat?' Redevelopment of the men's team building follows the construction of a £10 million building for the women's first team and men's academy in 2024.
