Kerala police plan brain mapping test on tribal woman
Sources said the Pookkottumpadam police will soon move the Nilambur Judicial Magistrate Court seeking the nod to conduct brain mapping on the woman, who hails from Cholanaikkan tribe – deemed a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group – and is a person with intellectual disabilities.
They said the cops decided to seek the nod after they could not make any headway in the case as the woman did not reveal what happened to her child.
Brain mapping or brain fingerprinting is a technique in criminal investigation where the brain is prompted to 'talk'. A few electrodes are attached to the scalp after which cues connected to the incident under probe are given.
They act as stimuli prompting the brain to generate waves as responses which are examined using a software. The technique was used in high-profile cases such as the Aarushi Talwar case and Sr Abhaya case.
As per an SC ruling, the test cannot be conducted without the subject's informed consent. In the woman's case, the consent of her immediate relatives are required. If the police get the nod, it will be the first instance of a female member of one of India's most isolated and endangered tribal groups undergoing the test, said a source.

Kerala Doctor Duped Of Rs 4.43 Crore In Online Trading Fraud; 2 Arrested
Kannur: The Kerala Police's cyber crime unit arrested two men from Chennai in connection with a sophisticated online trading fraud that defrauded a doctor in Kannur of Rs 4.43 crore, officials said on Monday. The accused, identified as Mehbubasha Farooq and Rijaz, were arrested by the Kannur City Cyber Crime Police from Chennai on Sunday evening, said an officer at the Kannur Cyber Police Station. Farooq is a resident of Chennai, while Rijaz hails from Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district and has been settled in Chennai, he added. The duo allegedly operated a fraudulent scheme through WhatsApp, promising the victim substantial returns on investments in a fake online trading platform. The police said that the accused lured the doctor, a resident of Mattannur in Kannur district, into a WhatsApp group that promoted an online share trading plan, assuring him of significant profits in June. The victim was directed to deposit the funds into various bank accounts as part of a "wealth profit plan" under a fake company's guise, identified as Upstock. 'We have traced about Rs 40 lakh deposited by the accused in their accounts. Besides this, the police detected as many as 18 more accounts in the name of various individuals to transfer the money earned through online fraud. The matter is under investigation now,' said the officer. He said that a part of the money was found to have been transferred abroad, adding that further details could not be disclosed at this stage. He said that no terror angle was found during the investigation. Though the trading app would show the profits earned, he found the platform unresponsive and could not withdraw the amount, prompting him to approach the police to file a complaint with the police on June 25. "The victim was led to believe he was making lucrative investments, but the entire setup was a sham," the cyber police said. The police said the cybercrime team apprehended the accused by tracing their bank account numbers and mobile phones used for the crime. A detailed investigation was launched, and the police were able to trace the financial trail to the two accused in Chennai, leading to their apprehension. The officer said that they are now probing the possibility of a wider network and other victims involved in this online fraud.

The Supreme Court, while hearing a suo motu case against stray dogs attacking childre n, said that strict action would be taken against any individual or organisation coming in the way of picking up stray dogs by authorities. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said as of now, dog shelters should be created to accommodate around 5,000 stray dogs and sufficient personnel should be deployed there to sterilise and immunise the canines. It said the stray dogs be kept at dog shelters and not be released on streets, colonies and public places. the bench remarked, further stating that it would not permit the adoption of stray dogs. The top court had on July 28 taken suo motu cognisance of a media report of dog bite incident leading to rabies in Delhi. Infants, children, aged should not fall prey to rabies: SC 'We need to pick up round up with whatever means to ensure dog free locality and that's how children and aged will feel safe. The said dog will be sterilised and shall not be released," the SC said. Set up dog shelters within eight weeks: SC 'Civic authorities in the Delhi-NCR region have been directed to make dog shelters and report about creation of infrastructure within eight weeks. It must have sufficient personnel for sterilised, dogs who would be detained there and not released in public places. It will be monitored by CCTV to monitor that no dogs are taken out," the SC said. 'We are issuing these directions keeping larger public interest in mind," the bench said.
