Tottenham Hotspur fire manager Ange Postecoglou despite winning Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur fired manager Ange Postecoglou despite ending the North London club's 17-year title drought with their Europa League victory over Manchester United. On Friday, Tottenham released a statement announcing the manager's dismissal, citing domestic struggles for the decision. They also released posts on social media, thanking Postecoglou for his contributions. Advertisement "We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw," the club wrote. "However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph." Despite raising the trophy in Bilbao in May, that did not make up for Tottenham's embarrassing finish to the Premier League season. In his second season with the club, the team just avoided relegation, finishing 17th with an 11-5-22 (W-D-L) record. Advertisement Their finish was a far cry from the fifth-place finish secured in 2024. Tottenham had not finished below the top 10 since 2008, the same year they won their last trophy in the League Cup. Postecoglou leaves Tottenham halfway through his four-year contract. The Spurs are now in search of their fifth manager in six years. They have not been able to retain a coach since Mauricio Pochettino ran the team from 2014 to 2019. In his two seasons, the 59-year-old Postecoglou recorded 47 wins, 15 draws and 39 losses for Tottenham. The club will now search for its next manager.

Delap picks Chelsea - what next for Man Utd?

As ever with these situations, Manchester United can draw a positive out of a negative. They felt earlier last week it was coming towards the end game in their pursuit of Delap, and it was between them and Chelsea. Now they know they have lost out. Advertisement The positive is, with the decision made, they can move on. That is in stark contrast to 2022, when then manager Erik ten Hag delayed for months in a fruitless attempt to sign Frenkie de Jong and United ended up panicking at the end of the transfer window and spent £150m on Casemiro and Antony. But that does not answer the pertinent question: who now? Delap fitted their template of an improving, hungry young player, with scope to reach a high standard - at a set fee. Rasmus Hojlund - who is four days younger than Delap - fitted the same criteria, apart from the last one. And it has not worked out. Advertisement Nothing I have seen on their post-season trip to Asia makes me feel United have the answer to their goalscoring issues within the club. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The 'safe' but expensive options are Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta. But Mateta is 27 and Mbeumo will be at the Africa Cup of Nations for a month with Cameroon. After that, it is a risk. Former United striker Danny Welbeck scored 10 goals in the Premier League at the age of 34. Is there any merit in bringing him back and taking some of the pressure off Hojlund - or has Ruben Amorim concluded the 22-year-old Denmark international will never be good enough? If so, it is back to Europe to sign another promising forward with no guarantee it will work.

Postecoglou sacked by Spurs despite ending trophy drought

Ange Postecoglou took Tottenham to a Europa League triumph but it was not enough to save his job (JUSTIN TALLIS) Ange Postecoglou was sacked as Tottenham manager on Friday, just 16 days after the Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. Advertisement But the Australian paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. "Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties," a statement on Tottenham's official X account said. Exactly two years after he was hired from Celtic, Postecoglou's eventful spell in north London was brought to a end by chairman Daniel Levy. Tottenham lost 22 of their 38 Premier League games to finish 17th in the table, above only relegated trio Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. Advertisement "The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place," the statement said. "Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph." smg/gj
