Fatal motorcycle crash under investigation in Bloomfield Hills

CBS News02-06-2025
A crash involving a speeding motorcycle resulted in the death of the rider Sunday afternoon in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, local police reported.
"We are thankful that no other injuries or fatalities resulted from this dangerous and reckless behavior," Chief Jeff King, Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety, said in the press release.
The circumstances leading to the fatal crash started about 2:45 p.m. Sunday in the area of Woodward Avenue and Hickory Grove Road, according to a report from Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety.
The motorcycle operator was traveling on a high rate of speed when a police officer tried to stop the rider; but the biker drove southbound on Woodward and the officer was unable to pursue at that point.
A short time later, another Bloomfield Hills officer saw the same motorcyclist riding at a high rate of speed southbound on Woodward near Long Lane Road, at which point the motorcyclist was "attempting to disobey multiple traffic control devices," according to the report.
At the traffic light on Long Lake, the southbound motorcycle collided with an eastbound vehicle. Police said the eastbound vehicle had the right-of-way at the intersection.
The motorcyclist was thrown off the bike as a result of that crash, and collided with objects in the median. Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety crews attempted to provide medical care, but the motorcycle operator was pronounced dead at the scene.
The occupants of the other vehicle were not injured.
Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety is working with the South Oakland County Crash Investigation Team on the investigation. Police ask that anyone with information to share about the crash call Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety at 248-644-4200.

The spice linked to low blood sugar and gum disease prevention

HOLD FOR PUB UNTIL FRI Cloves can do much more than just sweeten your baked goods. Used for thousands of years in traditional medicine, the warm spice commonly used in pumpkin pie and mulled wine may also benefit your gum health and lower your blood pressure, according to years of research. 'The antibacterial properties of cloves help kill harmful bacteria inside your mouth,' Idaho's Summit Dental Group explains. 'This makes cloves highly effective in controlling plaque and reducing the risk of gum disease.' Clove oil serves as a natural antimicrobial substance, stopping the growth of bacteria and fungi, according to studies. Just a few drops are enough. People shouldn't add more than 10 to 15 drops in an ounce of water, according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy. Clove oil can be an irritant for some people, particularly on the skin. This is because cloves contain eugenol, a yellow-colored compound commonly found in cinnamon and bay leaves. Eugenol affects the our ability to stop bleeding, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It can be harmful when adults take as little as 10 milliliters of eugenol, according to Mount Sinai. Children should not consume it. Still, eugenol is generally safe in the quantities found in food products made with ground cloves. Most pumpkin pie recipes don't call for more than a teaspoon of the spice. Eugenol has the ability to kill yeast, which can be the result of an overgrowth of fungus in the mouth. The compound is also what researchers say can lower your blood sugar levels. After taking 250 milligrams of clove extract daily for 30 days, researchers said participants in a 2019 study had significantly lower blood sugar after meals. Cloves are also packed with essential minerals. The spice has calcium to maintain strong bones, magnesium that can regulate blood sugar and calcium levels, potassium that helps the nerves and supports heart health, and vitamin K, which helps keep arteries healthy. Eugenol may help improve bone mass as well, according to research on animals. Lastly, cloves are a natural antioxidant, the substances found in foods that can prevent damage to cells and DNA. Experts say people need a variety of antioxidant-rich foods each day, such as berries and nuts. 'Antioxidants are almost like a shield around your cells, like a blanket around them to protect them from oxidative damage,' registered dietitian Julia Zumpano explained to the Cleveland Clinic.

Louisiana attorney general sues Roblox

The attorney general of Louisiana has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the platform of failing to implement basic safety controls and making the site the 'perfect place for pedophiles.' The lawsuit, filed on Thursday by Attorney General Liz Murrill, alleges that Roblox 'has and continues to facilitate the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana's children.' It also accuses the platform of purposely not rolling out basic safety controls to protect children from predators and failing to notify parents of risks. Roblox, which launched in 2006, has 82 million daily active users. The lawsuit notes that 20% of these users are under the age of 8, whereas another 20% are between the ages of 9 and 12. 'Due to Roblox's lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana,' Murrill said in a statement. 'Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety. Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger poised to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home.' According to the lawsuit, adults can pose as children on Roblox, and children can bypass age requirements to access experiences meant for older users. The lawsuit points to several sexually explicit experiences that were on the platform, including 'Escape to Epstein Island,' 'Diddy Party,' and 'Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe.' A spokesperson for Roblox said that while the company can't comment on pending litigation, the platform dedicates 'substantial resources, including advanced technology and 24/7 human moderation, to help detect and prevent inappropriate content and behavior, including attempts to direct users off platform, where safety standards and moderation may be less stringent than ours.' 'While no system is perfect, Roblox has implemented rigorous technology and enforcement safeguards, including restrictions on sharing personal information, links, and user-to-user image sharing,' the spokesperson said. 'The safety of our community is a top priority.' Last year, Roblox launched a number of safety measures to protect children on its platform, including barring users under the age of 13 from sending direct messages. The measures were implemented following reports that Roblox was exposing young users to dangerous risks, such as grooming and explicit content. Murrill's lawsuit states that Roblox's recent safety measures were implemented too late and are inadequate. The lawsuit seeks permanent injunctive relief, prohibiting the company from claiming that it has adequate safety features and from engaging in any activity that would violate the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act.
