PETALING JAYA : Facundo Garces, a defender for La Liga club Deportivo Alaves, has become the latest addition to the Malaysian football team.
'Welcome to the team, Facundo Garces,' Harimau Malaya's official X account said in a posting today.
Garces, who was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, has started training with the national squad.
The 24-year-old plays as a centreback for Alaves, which finished the recently concluded season in 15th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
He is expected to make his first appearance for Malaysia in a friendly game against Cape Verde tomorrow, before Harimau Malaya face Vietnam in a key Asian Cup qualifier match on June 10.
Bernama quoted Garces as expressing excitement at representing Malaysia, describing joining Harimau Malaya as an 'incredible honour'.
'Since arriving, I've felt the warmth, sense of family and genuine support from everyone. If this is just the beginning, I can only imagine how amazing it will be when the whole country stands behind us.
'I'm ready to give my all for Malaysia,' he said.

Suspected foreign national found dead at Bangsar construction site; identity yet to be confirmed
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The body of a man, suspected to be a foreign national, was discovered at a construction site in Bangsar this afternoon. Brickfields district police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood told Bernama that the identity of the man has not been confirmed, and investigations are ongoing. 'It has not been established whether the body belongs to the British national who was recently reported missing,' he said when contacted by the news agency. 'Investigations are still underway, and the fire and rescue personnel are currently working to retrieve the body,' he added. According to reports, the body was found near the lift shaft on the lower level of a construction site. Earlier media reports stated that a 25-year-old British man was reported missing after he was last seen near the Bangsar area on May 27. His family raised the alarm when they were unable to reach him by phone and noticed his social media accounts had become inactive.

Timely boost for Harimau Malaya's Asian Cup campaign
KUALA LUMPUR: The Harimau Malaya squad welcomed a timely boost ahead of their Group F AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier match against Vietnam at the National Stadium Bukit Jalil on June 10, following the inclusion of four new heritage players for the country. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced today in a statement that the four players are striker Rodrigo Holgado from Colombian club America de Cali, Sabah FC defender Jon Irazabal from Azerbaijan, Velez Sarsfield striker Imanol Machuca from Argentina, and Istanbul Basaksehir striker Joao Figueiredo from Turkey. 'All four players have been undergoing training sessions with the team for several days and have shown very impressive performances. As quality players, they are well prepared to strengthen the national squad to realize the dreams of all Malaysians,' the statement read. Meanwhile, Machuca, 25, stated that the opportunity to wear the national team colours is very special and a great honor for him. Holgado, 29, admitted that he has fallen in love with the atmosphere in Malaysia and is ready to give his all for the team coached by Peter Cklamovski.
