Official: Deportivo Alavés star seals €16m Ligue 1 switch

La Liga outfit Deportivo Alavés have this weekend secured for themselves a significant cash injection. This comes after attacker Joaquín Panichelli's long-rumoured departure from the club was finally made official. Panichelli, for his part, spent this past season out on loan away from Alavés. Not yet considered ready to be a regular contributor at Mendizorroza, the Argentine made the move to Spain's 2nd tier, with CD Mirandés. And to say that Panichelli went on to enjoy a productive stint on the books of Mirandés would be putting it lightly… All told, across 44 appearances in La Liga 2, the 22-year-old racked up a head-turning 29 direct goal contributions. Such exploits did not go unnoticed across the continent, with Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg, for one, having recently opened talks with their Alavés counterparts in an effort to beat out the stiff competition for Panichelli's signature. And as alluded to above, this weekend, such negotiations have officially borne fruit. As per a statement across Alavés' website and social media platforms on Sunday: 'Deportivo Alavés and RC Strasbourg Alsace have reached an agreement for the transfer of striker Joaquín Panichelli to the French club.' According to transfer insider , Panichelli's move to France has come at a cost of around €16.5 million. Conor Laird – GSFN

Real Madrid defender will complete his Alaves transfer this week

Real Madrid Castilla, as is the case every year, is parting ways with a number of young players whose cycle at the subsidiary division has come to an end. With very few players cut out for the level of the Real Madrid first-team, several young stars are moving out to various Primera and Segunda division clubs. Advertisement As relayed earlier this month, Youssef 'Yusi' Lekhedim is one such player set to leave the club who has attracted interest from the Primera division. Alaves, in particular, have been working hard to secure his arrival for next season. Close to official As confirmed by MARCA in a recent update, the Lekhedim to Deportivo Alaves deal is set to be officially announced this week and is very close to being officially completed. The player will sign for Real Madrid's La Liga rivals for four years. Also included in the deal is a buy-back clause for Real Madrid which will be active for the next two seasons. Advertisement The 19-year-old defender made Carlo Ancelotti's squad list on several occasions last season but did not make his debut for the first team. He played 35 games with the Castilla side in the RFEF Primera Division scoring one goal and providing four assists. The Spanish-Moroccan left-back, at this point, has little to no hope of making it big in the first team especially after the club officially announced the signing of Alvaro Carreras. After all, Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia are also in contention for the starting spot under Xabi Alonso. With the agreement reached and almost all formalities completed, the player will thus look to garner more minutes at his new club to continue his growth and make a case for Real Madrid to call him back.

Former Real Madrid star joins Deportivo Alavés for pre-season training

A one-time member of the attacking ranks at Real Madrid has early this week linked up with another of La Liga's clubs, for pre-season training. The player in question? Mariano Díaz. Frontman Mariano is for his part currently available as a free agent, having most recently spent time on the books of Sevilla during the 2023/24 campaign. Advertisement The 31-year-old has spent the time since working on his fitness and maintaining sharpness as best as he can, with a view to a future return to the pitch. And as alluded to above, if the latest word stemming from Spain early this week is anything to go by, then such an opportunity could yet be afforded to Mariano, by Deportivo Alavés. As per a statement across the website and social media platforms of the Babazorros on Monday: 'Forward Mariano Díaz Mejía, with a distinguished career in elite football, will train at Deportivo Alavés and participate in first-team training during this initial phase of the preseason. Advertisement 'The player, who has several national and international titles to his name, began his training today at the Ibaia Sports City and will share his first training session with the rest of the squad this afternoon.' Though no mention of Mariano's potential signing for Alavés is mentioned in the statement, the assumption is that, in the case of sufficiently impressing, the Dominican Republic international could be offered a contract. Anderlecht in talks with Deportivo Alaves for Malian defender

HLN are reporting that Anderlecht are in discussions with La Liga side Deportivo Alaves for 24-year-old Malian central defender Moussa Diarra. The former Toulouse man was the subject of a bid from the Mauves of around €2.5m, yet the Spanish side are hoping to get in the region of €4m. Anderlecht could certainly do with more central defensive cover, and with Diarra being left footed he would be able to replace the retiring Jan Vertonghen. Diarra only joined the Spanish side last summer and went on to make 27 appearances across La Liga nad the Copa del Rey. The side finished the season in 15th place. Prior to his Spanish adventure, Diarra had been part of the Toulouse set up, making his senior debut during the 2019/2020 season. He was part of the promotion winning side of 2021/2022, making 30 appearances that season. All in all, Diarra played 109 games for Toulouse, scoring once. He is also a full Malian international. Advertisement The Mauves are certainly being more active this summer than they were last year. They are closing in on a deal to sign Nathan-Dylan Saliba from the MLS, with a number of other targets also lined up. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Looking up to Garces

New Malaysian football player Facundo Garces. PETALING JAYA: The Harimau Malaya revolution continues with more Malaysians abroad expected to be unveiled soon. But for now, the spotlight shines on a towering new addition. Facundo Garces, a 25-year-old centreback from La Liga outfit Deportivo Alaves, has officially joined the Malaysian national football team, adding an unexpected but exciting twist to preparations for the crucial 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10. His inclusion has sent ripples through the local football community, not only for the surprise factor but also for the calibre he brings. "To be part of this national set-up is an incredible opportunity and a massive honour," said Garces. "Since arriving in Kuala Lumpur, I've felt the passion, the family spirit, and unwavering support within the team. "If this is just the beginning, I can't imagine how amazing it will be when the entire nation is behind us. I'm ready to give everything I have for Malaysia." Standing at 1.89m (6'2''), Garces is a commanding presence at the back. He first rose to prominence with Argentine Primera Division side Colon, where he amassed 129 appearances. Since his January move to Alaves, he has featured in 10 matches - starting the last seven league games in a row - proving his growing stature in top-tier football. Known for his aerial dominance, Garces is not only a defensive rock but a threat during set-pieces. National coach Peter Cklamovski couldn't hide his enthusiasm. "Facundo has a strong character. He's calm under pressure, has a fantastic personality, and brings with him valuable experience from top level competitions," said the Australian tactician. And Garces might not be the only one making waves in this international window. Sources suggest that two more players - possibly three - could join Garces in the current training camp. Cklamovski's extensive scouting network may soon bear more fruit, with names like winger Imanol Machuca, striker Rodrigo Holgado and centreback Jon Iranzabal being closely linked to the national set-up. Machuca, 25, is a nimble flanker who plays for Velez Sarsfield on loan from Brazilian side Fortaleza. The pint-sized Argentine-born winger, who stands just 1.70m (5'5'') is capable on either flank and thrives on creating goal-scoring chances. Holgado, 29, currently leads the line for Colombian giants America de Cali. The clinical striker has already netted seven goals and registered two assists in just 15 league appearances this season - an impressive return that could add bite to Malaysia's attack. Then there's Iranzabal, a 28-year-old Spanish-born defender who recently helped Azerbaijani club Sabah lift the national cup. The 1.87m (6'1'') hard man is renowned for his technical defending and was among the earliest mixed-heritage names linked with Harimau Malaya following Cklamovski's appointment. With new blood injecting quality and depth into the squad, the national team's ambitions are gaining momentum. And if this wave of talent delivers on its promise, Malaysia's dream of back-to-back Asian Cup appearances may soon become a thrilling reality.
