Two villagers killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur: Police

Raipur: The Maoists have allegedly killed two villagers in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police officials said on Sunday. The killings took place in Sendrabor and Aempur villages in south Bijapur. (Representational image) According to a police statement, the killings took place in Sendrabor and Aempur villages, both located under the jurisdiction of Pamed police station in south Bijapur, a region known for significant Maoist activity. While the motive and exact timing of the murders have not yet been officially confirmed, police said they are in the process of verifying the details surrounding the incident. This development comes just hours before Union home minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Raipur for a two-day visit to the state. Shah is expected to review the security situation in the Naxal-affected areas, making the timing of the incident particularly significant. This is the second such killing reported from Bijapur in the span of a few days. On June 17, three villagers—including a 13-year-old boy—were strangled to death using ropes in Peddakorma village, also in Bijapur district. In that case, police said that two of the three victims were relatives of senior Maoist commander Dinesh Modiyam, who had surrendered to authorities in March this year. While official confirmation on whether the latest killings are linked to Modiyam's surrender is awaited, security agencies believe it could be part of a broader pattern of retaliatory violence by Maoists against those they suspect of supporting or cooperating with law enforcement. The police have increased vigilance and are expected to deploy additional forces in sensitive areas ahead of Shah's visit. A high-level review of internal security, particularly in Maoist-dominated belts of Bastar, is likely during his tour.

Amit Shah lays foundation stones for NFSU campus, Central Forensic Science Lab in Nava Raipur

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday (June 22, 2025) laid the foundation stones for the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) campus and a Central Forensic Science Lab in Chhattisgarh's Nava Raipur Atal Nagar. Mr. Shah, who is on a two-day visit of the State during which he will tour a security camp and chair meetings on ongoing anti-Maoist operations, was accompanied by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Assembly Speaker Raman Singh and Ministers. The State Government has allotted 40 acres of land for the NFSU campus, which will be built by the Centre at a cost of ₹400 crore, informed Deputy CM Vijay Sharma, who also holds the Home portfolio in the Sai Cabinet. The Central Forensic Science Lab will come up on 6-7 acres of land near the NFSU campus, he added. Later in the day, Mr. Shah will chair a meeting of Director Generals of Police (DGPs) and Additional DGPs of Chhattisgarh and six neighbouring States on anti-Maoist operations, after which he will take part in a meeting on the security situation and ongoing operations against Left Wing Extremism, Mr. Sharma said. Mr. Shah will also meet the family members of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Girpunje who lost his life after a pressure IED planted by Maoists exploded on June 9, the Deputy CM informed. On Monday (June 23), Mr. Shah will visit a Border Security Force (BSF) camp in Narayanpur district, where he will interact with security personnel and Maoism-affected villagers. He will also take a ground review of the development works going on there, Mr. Sharma added. Anti-Maoist operations have intensified in Chhattisgarh since the BJP came to power after the 2023 Assembly polls. Since January last year, more than 400 Maoist ultras have been gunned down by security forces in separate encounters. The most notable was the killing of Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju (70), the general secretary and top most operative of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), in Bastar on May 21. Mr. Shah has repeatedly declared that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre and State Government are committed to eradicating Maoism by March 31, 2026.

Chhattisgarh: HM Shah lays foundation stone for NFSU campus, state forensic lab

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) campus in Naya Raipur, marking a significant step in strengthening the criminal justice infrastructure in Chhattisgarh. The Rs 350 crore project, to be built over 40 acres, is part of the Centre's broader strategy to enhance scientific investigation and law enforcement capabilities across India. State Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai shared a short video of his visit on his X handle. The campus in Raipur is expected to offer advanced training, research, and education in forensic sciences, catering not only to Chhattisgarh but to neighbouring states as well. Alongside the NFSU ceremony, HM Shah also performed bhoomi-pujan for a state-run forensic laboratory, which will serve as a vital support system for law enforcement agencies in the region. These developments are part of the Centre's commitment to integrating science and technology into policing, and ensuring faster, more accurate investigations and convictions. Later in the day, the Home Minister chaired a high-level meeting with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and top officials of police from Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations. The meeting touched upon coordinated actions between central forces and state police, the surrender policy, and rehabilitation strategies in affected districts. On occasion, HM Shah has reiterated his earlier deadline—March 31, 2026—for the complete eradication of Naxalism from India, underlining the importance of intelligence-driven, forensic-led policing in achieving this goal. On Monday, the Home Minister is expected to visit Narayanpur district, where he will interact with BSF (Border Security Force) personnel and villagers in the remote Abujhmad region. HM Shah is set to visit Irkbhatti, a remote region in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district, on Monday, where he is expected to spend nearly three hours engaging with local communities and security personnel. During his visit, the Home Minister will hold direct interactions with members of the Abujhmariya tribal community to gain first-hand insights into the implementation of the state's flagship welfare initiative, the 'Niyad Nella Narayan Yojana.' He will also distribute educational materials to local children as part of the government's outreach to underserved populations in insurgency-affected areas. In a gesture of appreciation, the Home Minister will meet with the security personnel involved in the operation that led to the neutralisation of Naxal commander Basavaraju. Since the BJP government took office in Chhattisgarh, over 427 Maoists have been killed in joint operations, with authorities stressing that development and modern policing go hand in hand.
