Canon Patrick McEntee on trial accused of abusing boys in school
A County Tyrone priest has gone on trial on historical indecent assault charges against five young men.Canon Patrick McEntee, 70, from Esker Road, Dromore, faces a total of nine counts of indecent assault dating back to the late 1970s.Canon McEntee, who was a teacher at St Michael's College in Enniskillen, has denied all the charges.The prosecution told Dungannon Crown Court that during the late 1970s and into the 1980s, Canon McEntee abused young boys who were pupils at the school.
It was alleged that the priest took the boys, who were aged between 11 and 17, into his private quarters where some of the boys were made to sit on his knee or touched inappropriately.The jury was told that it would have to decide if the priest's action "was pastoral care or sexual deviance".He is charged with four counts of indecent assault on one male between 1988 and 1989.There is also a single count of indecently assaulting a second male between 1980 and 1981.There are a further four counts of indecent assault against three males that allegedly occurred between 1978 and 1987.
Accused 'categorically denied the allegations'
The court heard that during a police interview Canon McEntee denied ever having touched boys in the way described, saying the allegation was "outrageous".During his second police interview Canon McEntee provided a written statement saying he "categorically denied the allegations" and then refused to answer police questions.The court heard that some of the witness testimony would come in the form of video evidence.Originally from County Monaghan, Canon McEntee taught religious studies at St Michael's and was the college president from 1994 until 2000.He has been a priest for more than 45 years and has been the parish priest of St Davog's in Dromore since 2001.In March 2023, the Diocese of Clogher announced he had been granted a leave of absence while an alleged safeguarding issue was investigated.Canon McEntee is on continuing bail of £500 and banned from any contact with the complainants and any person aged under 16.

'I wouldn't put anything past a person like him. 'If he is released, I will worry for every woman and child who, like me, believes the justice system is protecting them. 'A leopard doesn't change his spots.' Later this year Ms Behan expects to discover the outcome of her High Court appeal in Germany against his acquittal for raping her, another woman and a girl in Portugal in 2004. Ms Behan has accused the Portuguese authorities of alleged 'inaction' in identifying and prosecuting Brueckner. In April, she lodged an application to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Portuguese authorities over their handling of her attack. Ms Behan also expressed her sympathy and support for the Leicestershire-based family of Madeleine who went missing in Praia da Luz while on holiday with her family in 2007 when she was three years old. 'As a parent, I cannot begin to imagine what they have gone through and continue to go through every day for the past 18 years,' she said. German and Portuguese police and firefighters carried out a three-day search of an area near Praia da Luz last week in the latest efforts to find out what happened to the missing child.

British backpacker faces 20 years in jail after being charged over Australia e-scooter crash death
A British backpacker could face up to 20 years in prison in Australia after she was charged over the death of a man in an e-scooter crash. Alicia Kemp, 24, was charged with hitting Thanh Phan, 51, from behind on an e-scooter in Perth city on 31 May. Phan, a father of two, suffered injuries to the head and underwent surgery for brain swelling, but died two days later, ABC News reported. 'Thanh Phan – a beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend – was struck by an electric scooter and critically injured,' police said in a statement. 'We received the heartbreaking news that Thanh passed away as a result of his injuries.' Ms Kemp was charged with death by dangerous driving while under the influence which could put her behind bars for two decades if found guilty. Prosecutors said that she had a blood alcohol level of 0.158 when she "careered" onto Phan's back, driving the e-scooter at 25km per hour. Ms Kemp's friend, who was her e-scooter passenger, had allegedly been evicted from a bar due to intoxication before the crash. The friend, 26, also suffered injuries from the crash, including a fractured skull and broken nose. Police said CCTV footage captured Ms Kemp "inexplicably dangerous" riding. She was now facing an additional charge of dangerous driving under the influence for injuries suffered by her co-passenger. Ms Kemp appeared at the Perth Magistrates Court last week but was denied a bail application after the magistrate ruled that she posed a significant flight risk. She was reportedly visiting Western Australia on a four-month working holiday visa and had been celebrating with her friends before the incident. Phan's family described him as a "beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend". They called his death 'heartbreaking' and urged the city to review safety regulations related to the use of hired e-scooters. 'Over the next two days, the scooter providers will go through and collect them off our streets,' Perth deputy lord mayor Bruce Reynolds said, calling the incident a 'tragic event'. Police in Western Australia have also since launched a crackdown on e-scooters. 'Further education campaigns and compliance measures are being considered,' Rita Saffioti, the deputy premier of Western Australia, said. Ms Kemp remains in custody and will return to court on 15 July. Her parents are reportedly flying to Australia to support her.
