At least 20 dead following latest Israel strikes on Gaza
The latest round of talks has dragged on for weeks with no signs of breakthrough, though negotiators have expressed optimism. With Israel expanding its control over large chunks of Gaza, an expected pullback of troops is a major point of contention in the talks.
The Trump administration has been pushing Israel to wrap up the war and has shown signs of impatience.
On Monday, President Donald Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said Mr Trump was 'caught off guard' by a recent Israeli strike on a Catholic church in Gaza.
Top Christian clergy visited that church last week and in a press conference Tuesday in Jerusalem called for the war to end.
In the latest round of strikes, at least 12 people died when tents sheltering displaced people in the built-up, seaside Shati refugee camp on the western side of Gaza City, were hit, according to the city's Shifa Hospital, which received the casualties.
The dead included three women and three children, Dr Mohamed Abu Selmiyah, director of the hospital told the Associated Press. Thirty-eight other Palestinians were wounded, he said.
The strike tore apart tents, and left some of the dead lying on the ground, according to footage shared by the health ministry's ambulance and emergency service.
An overnight strike that hit crowds of Palestinians waiting for aid trucks in Gaza City killed eight, hospitals said. At least 118 were wounded, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the strikes.
Israel blames the deaths of Palestinian civilians on Hamas because the militants operate in densely populated areas.
It accuses the group of prolonging the war because Hamas has not accepted Israel's terms for a ceasefire – including calls to give up power and disarm.

Regina Spektor confronts pro-Palestine protesters who interrupted concert
Singer-songwriter Regina Spektor 's concert in Portland, Maine, was interrupted by pro-Palestine protesters on Saturday. Spektor, who is Jewish and emigrated from the Soviet Union to the US as a child, confronted the protesters, stating her show was 'not the place for that conversation' and that they were 'just yelling at a Jew'. She encouraged those disrupting the performance to leave, with some audience members subsequently departing the venue. Spektor referenced her family's history of escaping persecution, noting she only speaks English because they fled a country where Jews were 'othered'. Spektor, 45, has voiced her support of Israel in the past, including two days after Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack at Nova Music Festival.

Donald Trump thanks Sean Connery as he opens his second golf course in Aberdeenshire
The US President praised First Minister John Swinney as a "terrific guy" after they met at dinner last night. Donald Trump paid tribute to the late Scots acting legend Sean Connery as he opened his new golf course in Aberdeenshire today. Speaking on the first tee, the US President made a pointed reference to the high-profile planning row in the mid-2000s which delayed the opening of Trump International Golf Links. And the Republican leader also praised First Minister John Swinney as a "terrific guy" after having dinner with him last night. Trump told invited guests and media at his Menie Estate: "I was just want to thank everybody, this has been an unbelievable development. The land, they said, couldn't get zoned, it was an impossibility. "And Sean Connery said 'let the bloody bloke build his golf course. Once he said that, everything came into line. John and I were talking about it last night." Connery reportedly said in 2008: "During tough economic times, this is a major vote of confidence in Scotland's tourist industry and our ability to rise to the challenge. I look forward to seeing a new gem in the north-east that is good for Aberdeenshire and good for Scotland.' The Edinburgh-born actor, a huge golf fan, never played the resort before his death in 2020. David Milne, a near neighbour of the Trump golf course, later said the claim that Connery helped him land planning permission for his golf resort was 'utter bollocks'. Swinney raised the situation in Gaza with Donald Trump during a meeting this morning, the Record understands. The leaders spoke for around 15 minutes, before posing together for pictures in front of a US flag and the saltire of Scotland ahead of the opening of a second course at the president's golf club in Aberdeenshire. US-Japan trade deal guarantees lowest tariff rates for chips, pharma, Japanese official says
TOKYO, July 29 (Reuters) - Japan's leading trade negotiator said on Tuesday that the trade deal Tokyo agreed with the United States last week guarantees Japan will always receive the lowest tariff rate on chips and pharmaceuticals of all the pacts negotiated by Washington. "If a third country agrees with the United States on lower rates on chips and pharmaceuticals, those lower rates would apply to Japan," Ryosei Akazawa told a news conference. The European Union secured a 15% baseline tariff as part of a framework trade deal with the U.S. this week, averting looming new tariffs on chips and pharmaceuticals. Japan last week struck a trade deal with the U.S. that lowers tariffs on cars and other goods to 15% in exchange for a U.S.-bound $550 billion Japanese investment package including equity, loans and guarantees. Asked why there has been no joint statement on the agreement, Akazawa said Japan is prioritising having President Donald Trump sign an executive order to bring the agreed 15% tariff rate into effect. "We want to concentrate our efforts on getting the tariffs lowered first, and then we can consider whether an official document on the agreement is necessary," he said.
