Trio of Celts make Premiership TOTW

BBC News03-03-2025
Celtic, eventually, came out on top in Saturday's seven-goal thriller against St Mirren to roar 16 points clear at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.Brendan Rodgers' squad showed their class and I have three of his stars in my team of the week. It was a supreme display from Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate. He showed his class and provided a simply stunning assist for Yang Hyun-Jun's opener.Speaking of Yang, the super sub makes my team too. Talk about impact. Two goals and an assist off the bench for Yang Hyun-Jun, has him in my team.Daizen Maeda has to be player of the season. There was yet another goal for the outstanding Japan international who continually delivers the goods for his side, wherever he is deployed.

Celtic hero Sutton mocks Rangers fans for 'walking away'

Fans started leaving Ibrox just 20 minutes into the first leg of the Champions League play-off. The Belgian team took an early 3-0 lead, thanks to goals from Romeo Vermant, Jorne Spileers, and Brandon Mechele. Amazon Prime cameras caught some fans exiting the stadium, clearly unimpressed by Russell Martin's side. Celtic favourite Sutton couldn't resist a jibe, writing on X: "I thought Rangers fans don't do walking away… 20 minutes in and many have given up already…" With the return leg in Brugge next week, Rangers' hopes of a £40 million windfall and a place in the Champions League league phase appear slim. Rangers will need a remarkable comeback to keep their European dream alive.

Brother of Irish boxer who died after Ulster Hall bout running half marathon to give others a ‘second chance at life'

Galway man says race will honour sibling and boost organ donation The brother of an Irish boxer who tragically died after an Ulster Hall bout is preparing to run a half marathon to help give others 'a second chance at life'. John Cooney, from Co Galway, suffered an intracranial haemorrhage on February 1 after losing his Celtic super-featherweight title defence in a technical knock-out (TKO). The 28-year-old was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery following the fight, but later passed away from his injuries. Now his heartbroken sibling Aaron Cooney is raising funds by taking part in the Belfast Half Marathon next month with all proceeds going towards the Strange Boat Donor Foundation. Aaron reminisced on the 'close' relationship the pair had and how they worked in the same barber shop for many years. 'He was one of the kindest people you could ever meet,' he said. 'And he always did the extra little bit to keep everybody happy — no matter what was going on, he always pushed forward in whatever he was doing. 'Nothing ever really stopped him. He was very, very motivated and determined to achieve what his goal was his whole life.' The 22-year-old chose the Strange Boat Donor Foundation after the Cooney family were able to donate John's organs Aaron hopes to help further support the cause and prevent other families from experiencing grief and heartache. 'Running a marathon was always one of my brother's biggest goals in life,' he explained. 'But obviously with being a professional boxer, you don't really have that kind of time to take out to go run in a marathon — you're training for fights all the time. 'So when he passed away, I knew I wanted to do something big. My brother was able to donate five of his organs when he passed away. 'And obviously when you're actually face to face with that kind of thing, you really do realize how amazing of an ability it is to be able to give somebody a second chance at life.' Aaron's charity of choice is located in Salthill — one of his brother's 'favourite places in Galway' and his preferred spot for runs and sea swims. 'I picked that charity because they created a park for families that had lost people who had been able to donate their organs. It's just a very nice, peaceful area,' Aaron added. The upcoming 13-mile race will be the first long distance run Aaron has taken on. He has been training for over six months and will be joined by four friends on the big day. Several family members plan to be in Belfast to cheer Aaron on and he is confident 'we'll get a lot of people behind us.' 'Anything for charity always brings out kind of the best in people and we saw that when my brother was in hospital,' he said. 'We had so many people donating towards his GoFundMe. 'So I think a lot of people will be really getting behind us. And obviously they understand the motivation behind it for me and my friends that were also quite close to him as well.'

What might veteran Vardy bring Celtic?

Rumours over a reunion between veteran striker Jamie Vardy and Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers have been swirling in the past are crying out for a proven goalscorer and Vardy is still looking for a club after leaving Leicester City at the end of last was a glorious 13-year association, which featured two promotions, an FA Cup winners medal and the unforgettable Premier League triumph in scored 200 goals in 500 appearances for Leicester, terrorising defences and winding up opposition fans in equal 38, the former England striker is not the force he once was, but what might he bring to Celtic and what could the Scottish Premiership side offer him? Goals, big moments & banter Above all else, Vardy has a track record of scoring goals at the top reached double figures seven times in the Premier League and showed he still has the knack last term, netting nine times as Leicester were relegated."He wasn't the best trainer, he saved his energy for the games," former teammate Robert Huth said of him. "At times he was really poor in training, which is funny with how amazing he was on the pitch."When you look back, he scored pretty much any goal possible. He is very flexible in terms of his approach to the game and scoring goals. He was the ultimate team-mate. He would chase lost causes."Another of Vardy's title-winning colleagues says there is no doubt about where the striker stands in Leicester City circles."He is obviously the greatest ever Leicester player," Marc Albrighton told BBC Sport. "Everything he's achieved will never be forgotten by the Leicester fans and the club."It will take some getting used to not having him around the club." What could Celtic move offer Vardy? Vardy need only look at other players to have moved to Scotland in the swansong of their successful Premier League winner Joe Hart and another of Vardy's former Leicester team-mates, Kasper Schmeichel, have both contributed to Celtic's domestic dominance in recent years. Across Glasgow, Jermaine Defoe featured in Rangers' most recent title success."There is nowhere else on the planet that I'd want to play football," Hart told Premier Sports after his final game for Celtic. "I'm truly blessed to walk out with a big smile on my face. I'm just lucky I've been able to piggy-back on it."The hunger still burns bright for 26-cap England international Vardy despite his advancing years."This isn't retirement," Vardy said when he announced he was leaving Leicester. "I want to keep playing and doing what I enjoy doing most, scoring goals. "I may be 38 but I've still got the desire and ambition to achieve so much more."Could Celtic provide a home for such aspirations?
