Hyderabad traffic police crack down on illegal sirens and musical horns

The Hindu18 hours ago
Nearly 1,000 cases against the illegal use of sirens and multi-toned or musical horns were booked by the Hyderabad traffic police in a fortnight-long special drive.
Launched on August 4, the enforcement and awareness campaign is aimed at curbing the nuisance caused by unauthorised horns which not only cause public nuisance and panic but also lead to confusion on roads and accidents.
Between August 4 and 19, police booked 590 cases against motorists for using sirens and 397 cases for the use of multi-toned or musical horns. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis said the special drive would continue in the coming weeks.
Citing Rule 119 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 and Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, police reminded the public that such horns are strictly prohibited. Citizens have been advised to voluntarily remove them from their vehicles to avoid penal action.
The Traffic Police also urged road users to report violations through their social media handles or the traffic helpline number 9010203626.

Rapido, Uber resume bike taxi operations in Karnataka after 2 months' suspension, private transport body calls it ‘contempt of court'

Following 67 days of suspension, Rapido and Uber resumed their bike taxi operations in Karnataka on Thursday. A Division Bench of Karnataka High Court, consisting of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C M Joshi, on Wednesday allowed the state government a month's time to decide on framing a comprehensive bike taxi policy, citing that 'lives are at stake in this matter'. Additionally, the bike taxi operators, who are the petitioners, also sought an interim protection against any coercive action against aggregators until the next date of hearing on September 22. The Bench had noted that bike taxis are a 'legitimate business' and a blanket prohibition was 'unconstitutional,' calling the ban 'arbitrary, unreasonable, and violative of Articles 14 and 19(1)(g).' However, the court, without passing any interim orders, had cautioned the state while hearing appeals by the platforms. 'In no case, when a decision is being taken, should the state put everything into freeze. The police may continue to take action for other offences, but keep in mind this petition is pending,' the court said. The Bench did not issue any interim order explicitly allowing such operations to resume. The companies resumed operations that had been suspended since June 16, following a Single Judge order that prohibited bike taxi services unless the government issued specific rules and guidelines for the operation of two-wheelers as contract carriages under the Motor Vehicles Act. Rapido has also published its fare chart for bike taxi operations, wherein it is mentioned that commuters will be charged Rs 7.3 for 1 kilometre till 5 km, Rs 9.5/km from 5 km to 10 km, and Rs 11.5/km for a distance exceeding 10 km. Rapido, Uber, and Ola had challenged the ban, arguing that it violated constitutional rights. Meanwhile, Nataraj Sharma, president of the Federation of Karnataka State Private Transport Association, dubbed the move as contempt of court. 'The aggregators have indulged in contempt of court by resuming bike taxi operations, when the Single Bench order is still binding. The court has only asked the government not to take any precipitous action against aggregators, but has not allowed them to operate bike taxis. Moreover, we as a federation have also impleaded in this case, and the Bench must hear us before passing any orders,' Sharma told The Indian Express.

Tribunal awards Rs 29 lakh to kin of man killed in 2020 truck accident

Thane: Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), awarded Rs 28.9 lakh compensation to the parents of a 29-year-old pharmacist who died in a road accident in Aug 2020. The petition was filed by the victim's parents—a 59-year-old father and a 48-year-old mother, who initially sought Rs 80 lakh compensation but were restricted to Rs 1 lakh under section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act. However, the tribunal, presided over by member R.V. Mohite, determined the actual compensation based on income, dependency, and legal precedents. He succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital. Police registered a case against the truck driver for rash and negligent driving. The tribunal observed that the truck not only hit the motorcycle from behind but was travelling at such high speed that the driver couldn't control the vehicle for about 8 ft after impact. "The tyre marks of about 8 ft on the spot itself are sufficient to prove that the speed of the truck was out of control of the driver. The driver of the offending truck was the person who had the last opportunity to avoid the accident," the tribunal noted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, this game will keep you up all night. However, the tribunal rejected this contention, stating, "The insurance company has failed to prove that the driver of the offending truck was not holding a valid and effective driving licence at the time of the accident." The tribunal calculated compensation considering the victim's monthly salary of Rs 19,300 as a pharmacist at MGM Medical Store, Vashi. Using the multiplier method and factoring in future prospects, loss of consortium, and funeral expenses, the total award was fixed at Rs 28.9 lakh. Of the total amount, Rs 10 lakh will go to the father and Rs 18.9 lakh to the mother, with a portion required to be invested in fixed deposits. The tribunal ordered joint liability for the vehicle owner and insurance company, directing payment within one month with 9% annual interest from the petition date until deposit. E-rickshaw driver held for road stunts to gain social media followers

1 2 Jaipur: City police Wednesday arrested a 22-year-old e-rickshaw driver who turned the city's streets into his stage for dangerous stunts to increase followers on social media. The accused, identified as Fardeen Qureshi, was reportedly taunting the police on social media. The accused was caught in Vidhyadhar Nagar after the city's Crime Branch launched a coordinated operation with local police. A resident of Bhatta Basti, the accused built a following online by posting videos of himself performing reckless manoeuvres with his e-rickshaw. He openly dared the police to act against him, prompting the city to step in after videos began to go viral on social media. His vehicle, bearing a number, was seized during the arrest. The case, registered under sections of BNS along with sections of Motor Vehicles Act, highlights the growing trend of social media notoriety at the cost of public safety. Officers said the stunts not only endangered commuters but also encouraged impressionable youths to imitate such behaviour.
