Vasek Pospisil retiring from tennis after a career that included a Wimbledon doubles title

TORONTO (AP) — Vasek Pospisil, who won a Wimbledon men's doubles title and helped Canada win the Davis Cup, will retire from tennis after playing in the Toronto tournament next week.
'Eighteen years of professional tennis. Looking forward to playing in front of you one last time in Toronto,' the 35-year-old Pospisil posted Monday on social media.
Pospisil has been an advocate for players on the tours and joined with Novak Djokovic to form the Professional Tennis Players' Association, which filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court in New York against some of the groups running the sport.
On the court, Pospisil paired with Jack Sock to earn a Wimbledon championship in 2014 and was part of the Canadian team that won the Davis Cup title in 2022. Pospisil reached career-high rankings of No. 4 in doubles and No. 25 in singles.
The hard-court Masters event in Canada awarded Pospisil a wild-card entry.
'It's never easy making a decision like this,' he said. 'Tennis has been a huge part of my life, but it has become clear, both mentally and physically, that it's the right time to step away."

New York Giants have modest expectations in 2025: Field a 'competitive team'

The New York Giants are 9-25 since the beginning of the 2023 NFL season. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll barely escaped with their jobs. Giants co-owner John Mara feels the duo can still turn his team into winners. It won't be easy, but Schoen believes the Giants could be on their way. He is not shooting for a "worst to first" season in 2025. A winning season will do. On Tuesday, Schoen was asked if he felt he had built a playoff team. "We're just starting camp today," Schoen told reporters. "I understand the question, but the expectation is we're going to be a competitive team, a competitive roster. And again, all that starts today." The Giants lost eight games last season by one score or less. They were the best 3-14 team one could imagine. Their biggest issue has been their inability to sustain drives, creating big plays and, yes, score points. With a new quarterback unit led by veteran Russell Wilson, the Giants should be able to put up more points this year. Combine that with the addition of rookie linebacker Abdul Carter on defense, and Big Blue should be the competitive team Schoen thinks they can be.
