Cristiano Ronaldo makes decision over future after Club World Cup talks

Metro2 days ago

Cristiano Ronaldo has chosen to sign a new contract with Al-Nassr and will not play at the Club World Cup this summer, according to reports.
The 40-year-old has just finished his third season in the Saudi Pro League and ended up as the division's top scorer for the second campaign in a row.
However, Al-Nassr endured a difficult season as they finished third in the Saudi Pro League and failed to qualify for the AFC Champions League.
After Al-Nassr's final game of the season on Monday night which ended in a 3-2 defeat to Al-Fateh, Ronaldo indicated on his social media channels that he would be leaving the Saudi club.
'This chapter is over,' Ronaldo wrote alongside a picture of himself in an Al-Nassr shirt.

Al-Hilal, who are due to play Real Madrid in their first group game at the Club World Cup on June 18, had held talks to sign Ronaldo on a free transfer, with his contract due to expire on June 30.
Moroccan side Wydad Athletic Club had also held exploratory talks to sign Ronaldo for their Club World Cup campaign this summer.
However, FootMercato reports that Al-Nassr have reached an agreement to extend Ronaldo's contract.
The report claims that a deal has already been signed, and Ronaldo is expected to remain with the Saudi club for another two seasons. More Trending
Speaking on Thursday, Al-Nassr's sporting director, Fernando Hierro, claimed that negotiations with Ronaldo over a contract extension were ongoing.
'We are still in negotiations with Cristiano,' Hierro said. 'Hopefully we can find a solution on a renewal.
'Cris is now with his national team, with a few days off. His contract runs until June 30. We'll continue working so that all parties can reach an understanding.
'Without a doubt, everyone is working to ensure he continues here. There is a strong push from the entire country for him to stay and that will also be very important for him.'

England stars soak up sun at F1 Spanish GP ahead of Andorra World Cup qualifier

England's World Cup qualifier away to Andorra will be played in Barcelona next Saturday and the Three Lions began their week in Spain by going to watch the Formula 1 England's stars swapped football for Formula 1 on Sunday as they put on their glad rags and attended the sun-kissed Spanish Grand Prix. The Three Lions face Andorra next Saturday and the game will be played at Espanyol's home stadium in Barcelona. Taking the opportunity for a change of scenery, England's players will spend the next week in Spain ahead of the World Cup qualifier. Before starting their warm-weather training camp, Thomas Tuchel's squad were given VIP tickets to the Grand Prix. ‌ The likes of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and boss Tuchel were on the grid, meeting teams and drivers. There was even an awkward moment when Saka snubbed an interview with Sky Sports ' Simon Lazenby and ex-world champion Nico Rosberg in the build-up to the start of the rice. ‌ England's players looked suave in the heat of Barcelona, with many attending a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the first time. That included captain Kane, who told Sky: "I'm good, I'm hot. First one, I'm looking forward to it, I watch the F1 as much as I can, a few of the English guys are doing well this season, so I'm looking forward to seeing them." Bayern Munich fan Rosberg then thanked Kane for helping the German club win the Bundesliga title this season, with the striker scoring a whopping 38 goals. Rosberg then pressed Kane for who he was supporting in the race, asking the skipper not to give a 'diplomatic' answer. "Oh I know, I know," Kane chuckled. " Lando [Norris], I mean, he's been doing great this year and obviously he's got a great chance to win the championship, so I hope he can get himself in front today. ‌ "And of course George [Russell] and Lewis [Hamilton]. It'd be good to see them all on the podium." Norris started in second place behind McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri. Full focus will be on Andorra once the chequered flag is waved, as England look to continue their perfect start under new manager Tuchel. They'll also play Senegal in a friendly a week on Tuesday (June 10) in Nottingham. Tuchel has already ruled out releasing players involved who are in the Club World Cup early, despite the USA-hosted tournament beginning on June 15. ‌ "The discussion was very open," Tuchel said. "Very quickly we also understood this is a very important camp for us with one year to go until the Word Cup. Why send players if we want to cherish every day we have together. What signal would it send to the group to send players away?" How should England line up against Andorra? Give us your starting XI in the comments section. ‌ The German added: "I was an advocate and I could see the reason for the players who go to the Club World Cup to maybe leave a little earlier, to maybe change the squad. "I can understand the argument from especially the clubs who would love to see the players get a rest but we have a strong argument for ourselves and our goals we want to reach. "We are building a group and a togetherness. We want to develop a camaraderie and it is only possible if we take every day seriously." Chelsea outcast's son joins Arsenal as Blues exile faces uncertain future

Raheem Sterling has had an underwhelming loan spell at Arsenal but will remain linked to the club as son Thiago has joined the Gunners' academy. The England international's oldest son has signed up to join the Hale End academy at just eight years old. Paige Milian, Sterling's partner and Thiago's mother, posted the news on Instagram, writing: 'Beyond proud of my first born son Thiago for signing with @officialarsenalacademy U9's. 'The growth, dedication, and hard work you've shown over the past year has been incredible to watch, you've earned this. 'This is just the beginning so keep your feet on the ground, stay humble, and keep grinding, the journey doesn't stop here. Let's go TT.' Thiago Sterling will hope to follow the likes of Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly through the ranks at Arsenal in the years to come. While he will now remain very interested in the club, Raheem is set to leave Arsenal at the end of his current loan spell after a disappointing time on the pitch in north London. After two years at Chelsea it was made clear to the 30-year-old that he was no longer in the first team plans and would have extremely limited opportunities under Enzo Maresca. It appeared that he had found the ideal move in a loan switch to Arsenal, where he would challenge for a spot in the first team at a side competing for titles. Sterling would go on to make seven Premier League starts and 17 top flight appearances in total, failing to score in any of them. He made 28 appearances across all competitions, scoring just once in the Carabao Cup and showing only very brief glimpses of his best form. His future is now unclear as Arsenal will not be interested in making the move permanent and the chances of Sterling returning to the Chelsea first team are very remote. Having previously played for Manchester City and Liverpool, it now looks likely that the winger faces a step down in the size of club he will be playing for. Sterling does not turn 31 years old until December but has racked up a huge amount of experience, making 577 professional appearances since his debut as a 17-year-old for Liverpool in 2012. He has also won 82 caps for England, scoring 20 goals, but has not played for the Three Lions since 2022. Another man who has played for both Chelsea and Arsenal has suggested Fulham as a logical next stop in the career of Sterling. William Gallas told Genting Casino: 'I think it's time for a fresh challenge for Raheem Sterling. He has the chance to show what he could do at Chelsea and then Arsenal but it hasn't happened. More Trending 'He needs to go somewhere he will get more opportunities because even with some rotation at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta hasn't given him that. 'I think one of Arteta's biggest mistakes has been a lack of rotation at times because they have picked up injuries. 'You have to give players a rest at certain times, but with Sterling, he must be frustrated, maybe he will want to stay in the Premier League and in London. 'He's 30 now, but maybe a club like Fulham could give him that opportunity and more chances to play. I'm curious to see what happens next.' Simone Inzaghi coy over Inter future after latest Champions League heartbreak

Simone Inzaghi refused to confirm if he would be Inter Milan manager at the Club World Cup after he experienced Champions League final disappointment for a second time in three seasons. Inzaghi watched Inter get destroyed in Saturday's showpiece in Munich as Paris St Germain ran riot to inflict a 5-0 defeat. Advertisement Inter were on course for the treble in April, but a Coppa Italia semi-final exit was followed by being pipped to the Serie A title by Napoli and their last chance of silverware evaporated at Allianz Arena in a final where the build-up had seen Inzaghi heavily linked with a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. Inter Milan suffered a record Champions League final defeat (Mike Egerton/PA) Asked if he would manage Inter at the Club World Cup in America, which begins in two weeks, Inzaghi said: 'As I was saying before to your colleague, I cannot answer this question now. I came here out of respect for you, for politeness because I am hurting from a sporting point of view. 'It's not the right time to talk about the future. We are extremely disappointed and since July of last year we've played 58 or 59 games, we got to this final match, so it's awkward to talk about my future now. 'Again, we are extremely disappointed. We will be talking about the fact we won no silverware this year but these players deserve great credit because they gave it their very best shot and we suffered a lot of injuries. I wouldn't change these players for anyone else.' Advertisement While Inzaghi would not be drawn on his future, he did back Inter to bounce back from defeat by a record margin in a European final. Desire Doue put Inter Milan to the sword (Mike Egerton/PA) 'The club is strong, the club supports us, we have already signed two player for next year and we know we will have to sign some more, but the club has always supported us all the way,' Inzaghi said. 'They were with us in our victories, in our defeats, the president (Giuseppe Marotta) was there, all the top executives, again everyone is extremely disappointed, but they told me they are proud of what Inter achieved this year in these 59 matches. 'We're very sad now and clearly there were a whole lot of fans who came to support us and unfortunately as was the case two years ago we failed to win the most important match. Advertisement 'We have been through this before, we have suffered heavy defeats in the past and when you lose a final it always leaves a mark, but we can get going again all together because the club is solid and always supports us.' Simone Inzaghi could not inspire Inter Milan to victory (Mike Egerton/PA) Inter president Marotta backed Inzaghi to continue, telling the official club website: 'Our assessment of Inzaghi hasn't changed. 'As I've already said, he still has one year left on his contract and over the past four years, he's proven himself worthy of the role he holds. 'He's shown great professionalism, and one disappointing night doesn't erase all his achievements.' Advertisement
