O'Brien's Diego Velazquez strikes Group One gold in Deauville
The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt was recently purchased by Sam Sangster and was running for the first time in the family's famous silks under Christophe Soumillon.
The bay was running alongside stablemate The Lion In Winter in the Group One, who was joined by Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini in making much of the running throughout the one-mile trip.
Diego Velazquez was always travelling well on the outside, however, and threw down his challenge in the final stages to see off a rapid finish on the inner rail from Charlie Appleby's Notable Speech, who was beaten just a head. Dancing Gemini was a further three-quarters of a length back in third.
The winning trainer said: "This is a breeding operation that produces very good two- and three-year-olds. He's a superb model, a willing horse, his last run was very good and he really came to himself last week."
Diego Velazquez's last run was in the Minstrel Stakes, named in honour of the late Robert Sangster's dual Derby winner who ran in the same colours carried to success at Deauville on behalf of his son.
Of that synchronicity, O'Brien added: "The Minstrel Stakes has often proved an excellent stepping stone - it's a sharp 1,400 metres, and you need to be sharp.
"If you think about Ballydoyle's history, and the history of these colours with horses like The Minstrel, who could have imagined that we would have a horse running in Mr Sangster's silks? It's just incredible, and I'm so delighted for Sam - truly thrilled.
"We thought he might be a horse for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Keeneland and then possibly the Breeders' Cup Mile. He loves fast ground and he's quick.
"A lot of money has been spent this week on his stallion career. But sometimes money isn't what matters. What they achieved today - you can't buy that, those are memories."
An emotional Sangster was thrilled at his new acquisition's success, telling Sky Sports Racing: "It means a lot, we're so lucky.
"MV (Magnier, former co-owner) is one of my oldest and greatest friends and when I came to him with the presentation of buying the horse to stand at the National Stud, he was fully supportive.
"We were lucky to buy him and we're even luckier now, that's for sure!
"He's an absolutely gorgeous horse, he's so tough, so genuine. He's a phenomenal mover and to be honest, when he came out of his box you could already see him at the stallion barn at the National Stud.
"I'm a little lost for words to be honest, but I'm so delighted. He deserved to get that Group One today and I'm just so delighted to be involved with him."
Despite defeat Charlie Appleby was still pleased with Notable Speech, who returned to form to an extent having failed to hit the heights of his three-year-old career so far this term.
He said: "We're delighted with how the horse ran. Of course it's frustrating to be beaten by so little, but the most important thing is to see him back to his best. The mile is his optimum trip. We tried dropping him back last time - sometimes you need to experiment.
"We'll probably go to Canada for the Woodbine Mile, and then head to the Breeders' Cup."
Roger Teal, trainer of Dancing Gemini, said: "He really ran exceptionally well. The ground was probably a bit too quick, and perhaps he didn't fully settle in the last 100 metres. It was still a top-class performance.
"Once again he showed huge ability, and a Group One win will come soon. He's also entered at Ascot but first we'll go to ParisLongchamp for the Prix du Moulin.
"We're hoping to find slightly easier going, that's the next target. He doesn't need it heavy but just ground with a bit more give."

Bockos Diamond still the one to beat as Irish Greyhound Derby draw made
The draw for the first round of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby, which gets underway this Friday, August 22, took place on Monday morning at Shelbourne Park and reigning champion Bockos Diamond heads the list of 144 runners. After a remarkable sprint trial in Cork, where Graham Holland's dog went lengths below the track record, he trialled in Shelbourne but much went wrong as he recorded a modest-by-his-standards 28.44. Back in Cork on Saturday night, this time for a 525 trial, he didn't impress onlookers with his 28.23 run, but there is no great reason for concern just yet. His performances in last year's Derby were record-breaking and record-equalling, and he found a way to win the decider despite not being paw-perfect. He remains the one to beat, and that is reflected in the sponsor's book, in which he is the 4-1 favourite. They make kennelmate Cheap Sandwiches, who was runner-up last year, the 14-1 second-favourite, but he has some questions to answer following his most recent efforts. Callaway Knegare, who finished third last year, is next up in the betting, at 16-1. In total, four of last year's finalists return, the other being Boylesports Bob, a 50-1 chance. Recent Bar One Irish Sprint Cup runner-up Droopys Patriot is as short as 16-1, the same price as Bombay Pat, who was unlucky not to reach the final in 2024. At available odds, the last-named makes most appeal at this stage. Former English Derby champion De Lahdedah is having his third crack at the Irish Derby and is 20-1 to lift the prize, while veteran performer Seven Beach has had the most remarkable year, but surely taking the Derby crown is a bridge too far for the terrific tracker. Odds of 33-1 may tempt his faithful followers. Magical Major has the ability and there have been signs that he may be beginning to put it all together. Odds of 16-1 may not excite anyone but he has the potential to go all the way. Proper Heiress underperformed in the English Derby, but it is great that connections have seen fit to send him over to compete. He has the gears to go a long way. Of the six runners with the famous Ballymac prefix, Ballymac Stud is shortest in the betting, but Ballymac Tibet makes most appeal. The first 12 heats take place on Friday night, the last 12 on Saturday, and four runners will qualify from each to give us 96 runners going into round two. After that, it will be three to qualify, all the way to the final, which will be held on September 27. Aidan O'Brien pulls ‘amazing' horse from £1.2million Juddmonte after odds collapse in ‘surprising and rapid' market move
AIDAN O'BRIEN has pulled 'amazing' filly Whirl from the £1.25million Juddmonte International - after her odds collapsed in a head-scratching market move. The Ballydoyle boss' long-time ante-post fav Delacroix was a worrying drifter in the markets on Sunday afternoon. 1 It looked like long-time Juddmonte ante-post fav Delacroix was going to be pulled from the race after his odds drifted as stablemate Whirl's collapsed - but Aidan O'Brien declared the former and pulled the latter in a head-scratching market move Credit: Alamy He went all the way out to 6-1 - and 13-1 on the Betfair Exchange - having been 7-4 as his stablemate was hammered into 4-1 from 16s. Advertisement The writing looked on the wall for the Coral-Eclipse winner as punters gave up hope of a rematch with John & Thady Gosden's Ombudsman. But just as it looked like the field was set, O'Brien declared Delacroix and left dual Group1 winner Whirl out of the York Ebor festival feature. The massive upheavel in the markets meant some cashed out bets on Delacroix believing he would be a non-runner. While those who followed the gamble on Whirl were left with 'burned fingers' after she wasn't declared. Advertisement Coral couldn't split the two leaders after declarations, having Delacroix and Ombudsman both 15-8. The firm's David Stevens said: "Ombudsman had claimed outright favouritism for the race over the weekend, but with his Coral-Eclipse conqueror, Delacroix, the only Ballydoyle challenger declared for the race, the younger colt has rejoined his older rival at the head of the market." O'Brien also failed to declared dual Derby hero Lambourn, instead leaving him to face six rivals - and three stablemates - in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur, also on Wednesday. A total of six were declared for the Juddmonte, which is routinely ranked one of, if not the best, race in the world. Hollie Doyle loses job as Oisin Murphy replaces her in role
Hollie Doyle will no longer serve as the retained jockey to owner Imad Al Sagar, with Oisin Murphy set to step into the role instead. Doyle was aboard each time Al Sagar's brilliant mare Nashwa hit the track, steering her to three Group One triumphs during the peak of her career. Whilst the official retainer has now concluded, Al Sagar and his racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe are eager to preserve their connection with the jockey. "We're keen to stress that we have had a fantastic relationship with Hollie throughout, and we hope that will continue for many years to come in different forms," said Grimthorpe. "There are, however, moments when it is time for a change and Imad felt this was the right time to move on. "We will now use Oisin, when available, in the absence of Hollie." Doyle, Britain's most successful female jockey, became the first female to win a Classic race when she landed the French Oaks in 2022 on Nashwa. Doyle said after Nashwa's retirement: 'She came along at a pivotal time in my career and she has been a star for the stud, Imad and myself. She took my career to new heights and I'll be forever thankful to her for that and I thank Imad for the opportunity.' Murphy will now ride as first jockey for Al Sagar when he is not required by Qatar Racing.
