"I'm hoping this is a wake-up call for Brunson" - Charles Barkley thinks the Knicks play better when Jalen Brunson gets off the ball

The New York Knicks' bench gave them a huge boost as they defeated the Indiana Pacers 106-100 in crucial Game 3 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals.
Known for being a starter-heavy team, the Knicks had nine players playing at least 11 minutes, all scoring at least 2 points, on Sunday night. They rallied from an early 20-point deficit to win the game and cut the Pacers' series lead down to 1-2.

With contributions from a lot of players, New York survived a 6-18 shooting night from Jalen Brunson, who finished with a series-low 23 points. But while everyone was praising the Knicks' bench for stepping up, Hall of Famer Charles Barkley looked at things differently.
According to "Sir Charles," everyone on the Knicks played well because Brunson did not monopolize the ball as he was forced to sit out a significant number of minutes due to foul trouble.
"I'm hoping this is a wake-up call for Brunson. Like, 'Yo man, you going to have to get off the ball.' They've had their best two spurts in the series, Game 1 and today, where everybody's getting involved. He has to learn from that and get off the ball a little bit more," said Barkley.
Knicks have made big runs with JB on the bench
Brunson averaged 38.5 minutes per game in Games 1 and 2 but played only 31 in Game 3 due to foul trouble. As Kenny Smith noted during the post-game show, the Knicks were a +6 during the game with the Villanova product on the bench. And as we saw during the game, the Knicks made their runs with their star on the bench.

After Brunson committed his third foul with 1:36 left in the second quarter and the Knicks were down 40-58, they cut the lead to 45-58 at the half. Then, after JB committed his fifth foul at the 7:03 mark of the fourth quarter and the Knicks were up by only one point at 89-88, his teammates held the fort. The game was tied at 98-98 when he re-entered the game with 1:37 left to play.
Also, in Game 1, Brunson left at 10:05 in the fourth quarter due to foul trouble. At that point, the Knicks were up 94-92. When JB returned with exactly five minutes left to play, his team was comfortably ahead at 111-98. Unfortunately, they blew that lead and lost, but as Barkley noted, the Knicks went on a run with the 6'2" guard on the bench.

Teague blamed Brunson for the losses
Barkley isn't the first talking head to call out Brunson's ball dominance in the ECF. After the Knicks lost Game 2, former Atlanta Hawks All-Star guard Jeff Teague said that the Knicks can't get into an offensive rhythm because Brunson is monopolizing ball.

"Jalen Brunson holds the ball for… The shot clock is 24 seconds; he's holding that bit** for 17," said Teague. "Trying to get a pick and roll, bring another dude, bring another dude, I'm going one-on-one, I'm going one-on-one. If he don't make it, it's like fu*k. It's the way he hold the ball; they don't get no rhythm. That's why when he comes out of the game, all of a sudden, the pace picks up, the tempo picks up. All of a sudden, you see people start hooping a little bit."
Make no mistake, the Knicks won't be where they are right now if not for Brunson, who is having another MVP-type season. While he has always delivered the big baskets for the NY squad, we've seen the Knicks play better as a team when he is off the floor.
This isn't saying that the Knicks are better off without him because they are not. But perhaps the ball should move more on offense for the Knicks since they won Game 3 with contributions from many players.

Ranking Nickeil Alexander-Walker free-agency destinations if he leaves Timberwolves

The post Ranking Nickeil Alexander-Walker free-agency destinations if he leaves Timberwolves appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Minnesota Timberwolves were just eliminated from the Western Conference Finals by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Unfortunately for Timberwolves fans, this may have been the team's best shot at winning the championship. Advertisement Minnesota had arguably the best eight-man rotation in the NBA. Their starting five consisted of Anthony Edwards, Mike Conley, Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle, and Jaden McDaniels, and their bench players were all starting-caliber hoopers. That bench consisted of Naz Reid, Donte DiVincenzo, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. The team is likely to get a whole lot thinner this offseason as both Reid and Alexander-Walker can and likely will become unrestricted free agents. It will be hard to re-sign either of them, let alone both. Alexander-Walker has had some big moments in these playoffs, so where are his best free-agent fits if he leaves Minnesota? 1. Hawks add more defense Alexander-Walker is one of the best point-of-attack defenders in the NBA. Surrounding Trae Young with elite defenders should still be the priority for the Atlanta Hawks, which is why the team should sign the wing in free agency. Young is an elite offensive player who has led the league in both points and assists. Advertisement He is a liability on defense due to his short stature and skinny frame, though. Dyson Daniels was in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation this year while sharing a backcourt with Young. Daniels had one of the best seasons stealing the ball ever, but even more defense would help because the Hawks still finished 20th in team defensive efficiency. Alexander-Walker is much more than just a defensive ace, too. The shooting guard/small forward shoots close to 40% from deep every season. He particularly thrives as a catch-and-shoot threat from the corner. Having another marksman for Young to kick out to would make the Hawks' offense even more dangerous. 2. Nickeil Alexander-Walker to the Pacers Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports The Indiana Pacers are so effective because everybody on their roster can shoot the basketball. Alexander-Walker would fit right in, in that regard. The Pacers are currently up 3-1 over the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. The NBA Finals are right around the corner for the team, but despite that, they are still being overlooked by a lot of fans and media. Advertisement Some believe they are still a piece away from true contention. Regardless, by signing Alexander-Walker this offseason, the Pacers would certainly better their chances of winning. Indiana already has incredible depth, so why not add even more? Additionally, the Pacers are a pretty average defensive team, and Alexander-Walker help could get them over the hump in that regard. 3. Thunder pair cousins together The Thunder already have 15 players under contract for next season, and big paydays are coming for players such as Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams. That makes it highly unlikely that the team would give a big contract to a free agent this offseason. They already did that last offseason when they gave Isaiah Hartenstein a three-year $87 million deal. Not to mention, the Thunder still have a surplus of draft picks coming in over the coming years. Advertisement Even so, there is no denying that MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his cousin, Alexander-Walker, share a special bond. If the cousins really wanted to play together, the Thunder could try and make it happen. The two battled in the Western Conference Finals against each other while singing each other's praises the entire time. Family ties are strong in professional sports, and while Alexander-Walker would fit exactly what the Thunder like to do, him signing to the Thunder is just too unrealistic. Oklahoma City is the favorite to win the NBA Finals this year, and Alexander-Walker signing with the team would be an example of the rich getting richer.

Report: If Steven Adams leaves in free agency, Rockets eyeing Brook Lopez as backup plan

When the Houston Rockets signed Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks in 2023 free agency, they also pursued Bucks center Brook Lopez. But in the final hours, Lopez spurned Houston to stay in Milwaukee. Two years later, however, the interest from a basketball standpoint is still there. If backup center Steven Adams leaves the Rockets this offseason, The Athletic's Kelly Iko reports that Houston could again pursue Lopez in free agency: If Adams leaves, team sources said the Rockets could reignite their interest in Brook Lopez. The 37-year-old, who averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game (while) shooting 37% from 3 in Milwaukee last season, was previously a target for Houston. He would theoretically be a fit, given his two-way production and health (played 237 games over the last three seasons). Advertisement Lopez will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, with negotiations open to all teams on June 30. To be clear, Houston's priority will be Adams, who is several years younger (at 31) and is coming off an extremely strong run in the 2025 NBA playoffs. But as an unrestricted free agent, he will have other options — and the Rockets can't offer a starting role, given the presence of All-Star incumbent Alperen Sengun. Interestingly enough, one of the reasons Lopez stayed with the Bucks two years ago was presumably the fact that Milwaukee appeared much closer to title contention. But the aging Bucks are reeling and dealing with a potential trade request from franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo, while the young and improving Rockets are coming off a 52-30 season with the NBA's fourth-best record. Advertisement The landscape has changed, and that might make the Rockets more of a draw to Lopez, this time around. However, Adams remains Houston's preference. Both Adams and Lopez could potentially play alongside Sengun in double big lineups, which the Rockets increasingly used as the 2024-25 season progressed. The ability of Lopez to also hit 3-pointers could mitigate some of the floor spacing concerns with those units, though Adams is clearly the superior rebounder. When the New York Yankees acquired former Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams in the offseason, it was evident last season's closer Luke Weaver would be moved back to the setup role, a place he'd been in previous seasons. Due to Williams' struggles in the early part of the season, Weaver was moved back to the closer role and excelled. Williams will get a second opportunity in the closer role as Weaver is headed to the injured list with an apparent hamstring injury. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 31: Luke Weaver #30 of the New York Yankees pitches during an 18-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on May 31, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 31: Luke Weaver #30 of the New York Yankees pitches during an 18-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on May 31, 2025 in Los Angeles, MLB insider Jeff Passan reported late Monday night that Weaver would be headed to the injured list and expected to miss 4-6 weeks because of a hamstring injury. Passan reported the injury was suffered Sunday night when Weaver was warming up to enter New York's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Weaver has been phenomenal this season for the Yankees, as he's posted a 1.05 ERA, eight saves and 24 strikeouts in 24 appearances and 25 2/3 innings. He's allowed just three runs all year and was well on track to represent New York in this season's All-Star Game. Because of Weaver's injury, Williams will be placed back in the closer role and will look to turn his season around. He currently has a 6.23 ERA and has allowed 15 runs in 21 2/3 innings. Williams was one of the best closers in the league during his time in Milwaukee, as shown by his career 1.83 ERA and 68 saves with the Brewers. New York will need Williams to step up and perform at the level he is capable in hopes of staying atop the AL East and awaiting the return of Weaver for a postseason push in September and October.
