AIIMS Bhubaneswar announces cancellation of all leaves amid India-Pakistan tensions
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], May 10 (ANI): AIIMS Bhubaneswar has announced the cancellation of all kinds of leaves, including vacation and station leave in view of the circumstances arising in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor.
This comes after the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday cancelled the leave of all health ministry officials.
In an official order, AIIMS Bhubaneswar said, 'In pursuance to the Office Order of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India dated May 9, 2025 (copy attached) and in the view of impending situation, no leave of any kind including vacation and station leave is to be granted to any officer except on Medical Grounds, till further orders.'
'Further, the already sanctioned leave, if any, stands cancelled, and the officers who are on leave are directed to resume their duties immediately. Therefore, all faculty members, Residents and all other staff members and Officers who are on leave as on date are hereby informed to report to duty immediately. This will come into force with immediate effect,' the letter further stated.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday cancelled the leave of all health ministry officials till further notice.
'In view of the impending situation, no leave of any kind, including station leave, is to be granted to any officer except on medical grounds, till further orders. Further, the already sanctioned leave, if any, stands cancelled and the officers who are on leave are directed to resume their duties immediately,' the Health Ministry stated.
On Friday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda chaired a high-level meeting with senior health ministry officers to review emergency health systems preparedness.
The current status of medical preparedness for handling emergency cases was presented to the Union Minister. He was apprised of the actions taken regarding deployment of ambulances, ensuring adequate availability of medical supplies, including equipment, medicines, and blood vials and consumables, hospital readiness in terms of beds, ICU, and HDU, deployment of BHISHM Cubes, advanced mobile trauma care units, etc.
Hospitals and medical institutions have been advised to ensure the availability of essential drugs, an adequate supply of blood, oxygen, trauma care kits, etc.
AIIMS New Delhi and other Central government hospitals have mobilised doctors and nurses with supplies for ready deployment. They have been advised to coordinate with state and district administration, armed forces and regional associations of doctors, nurses, paramedics, private sector hospitals, charitable institutions, etc., to strengthen the emergency response networks in a collaborative manner.
Additionally, nationwide mock drills for disaster preparedness have been conducted at AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER and other premier hospitals.
The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation in its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services and emergency response across all regions.
The Indian Army, during the intervening night of May 8 and May 9, successfully repelled and responded to multiple drone attacks by Pakistan along the western border and the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)

6 more deaths tied to Covid take India toll since January to 65
NEW DELHI: Six more Covid-related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the Union health ministry said on Sunday. The country's total Covid count has crossed the 6,000-mark, with 769 fresh cases being reported in the last 48 hours, revealed data released by the ministry. Kerala continues to be the most affected state, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi. In all, there are 6,133 active Covid cases in the country. With the latest casualties, the Covid death toll since Jan has gone up to 65. Maharashtra has recorded the maximum fatalities (18), followed by Kerala (15) and Delhi (7). Due to the rising number of cases, Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness and has instructed all states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, official sources said. However, most cases are mild and are being managed under home care, they stressed. A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3, under the chairpersonship of director general of health services (DGHS) Dr Sunita Sharma, with representatives of Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, and central govt hospitals in Delhi and with representatives of states and UTs to evaluate the situation and preparedness measures.

‘Mixopathy' of med systems dangerous: IMA
Madurai: Indian Medical Association has raised concern over the steps taken by the Union govt to introduce an integrated MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) course. IMA Madurai chapter said that while collaborations are welcome, such 'mixopathy' of medical systems will bring down the quality of medical care and endanger patients' safety. Union minister of state for health and AYUSH (independent charge), Prataprao Jadhav, had said that plans are underway to launch India's first MBBS-BAMS course at Jipmer in Puducherry. "Will anyone be ok with integrating automobile and aeronautical engineering courses? The govt should support and strive to achieve excellence in one particular field instead of forcibly mixing two separate fields," said Dr V N Alagavenkatesan, secretary, IMA, Madurai. Not enough scientific research has been done in AYUSH systems, and it is disappointing to have the scientific evidence-based allopathy system being forcibly integrated, he said pointing to such integration not being well-received in countries like China.

COVID-19 update, 8 June 2025: Active cases in India cross 6,000; 3 out of 6 deaths in Kerala, 21 test positive in Delhi
Covid-19 Update, June 8: India's active Covid-19 tally breached the 6,000 mark on June 8, up from just 257 cases two weeks ago on May 22. The country has been seeing a recent, steady uptick in the number of coronavirus cases amid similar trends in other Asian territories like Singapore and Hong Kong. The number of active Covid-19 cases in India rose to 6,133 in the past 24 hours, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health's Covid dashboard. From just 257 active cases on May 22, it crossed the 6,000 mark on Sunday. As many as 378 new cases of coronavirus were reported over the past 24 hours in India, the health ministry's data showed on Sunday. This is a drop from the 391 cases that the country recorded on Saturday. The number of deaths increased in the last 24 hours as compared to data from Saturday. Six people died due to Covid-related causes over the past day, as per the data. Three of them were from Kerala. In Kerala, a 52-year-old man died due to respiratory failure amid a positive Covid-19 status. A 92-year-old man also died due to the same reasons in the state. The third death was that of a 64-year man, with the cause being Covid-19, bilateral pneumonia and sepsis. Kerala also continued to report the most number of cases in the past 24 hours, as per the health ministry data. The number of active cases were also the most in the state at 1,950. The three other deaths were reported from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with the former recording two deaths. At 144, Kerala recorded the most number of cases in the country, followed by Gujarat at 105, Karnataka at 78 and Maharashtra at 77. Kerala has the most number of cases at 1,950, followed by Gujarat at 822 and Delhi at 686. Haryana reported 12 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, of which 10 were from Gurugram district, officials said. According to the state health department, the number of active cases in the state on Sunday was 100 while it has reported a total of 181 cases this year. Maharashtra on Sunday reported 77 Covid-19 cases, taking the state's tally since January 1 this year to 1,439, a health department official said. Of the new cases, 41 have been reported from Pune, while 25 of them were from Mumbai. West Bengal reported 71 new cases of coronavirus infection, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Sunday. There was no death due to the disease during this period. Altogether 53 recoveries were registered in the state which took the total number of active cases to 693, it said.
