Downtrend in China's export value to US slows in June

NHK14-07-2025
China's export value to the United States continued to fall in June from a year earlier. But it recovered ground from the previous month.
Exporters apparently rushed to ship out goods before the mid-August deadline for the two countries to work out their tariff deal.
Chinese customs authorities say US-bound shipments dropped 16.1 percent in dollar terms. That compares to a decline of 34.5 percent in May.
The value of imports from the US fell 15.5 percent in June. That was also a smaller drop than the previous month.
Washington and Beijing slashed their steep additional tariffs in mid-May. They agreed to halt some of them for 90 days and continue negotiations.
China's overall exports grew 5.8 percent last month, due to increased shipments to Southeast Asia and Europe. Imports rose 1.1 percent.
Many Chinese firms send components to Southeast Asia for assembly and ship the finished products to the US from those countries.
The practice could be affected by additional US tariffs on major economies in the region that are due to take effect on August 1.

Trump says US, EU agree on 15% tariff

US President Donald Trump says he has reached a tariff agreement with the European Union. He met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland on Sunday. After the talks, the two spoke to reporters. Trump had said Washington would impose a 30 percent levy on goods from the EU starting on August 1. But he said the rate will be set at 15 percent. Trump explained that automobiles and nearly everything else will be subject to that rate. But he said the 50 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports will remain unchanged. Trump said the EU is going to agree to buy 750 billion dollars' worth of energy from the US and make new investments of 600 billion dollars in the country. Trump also said all of the EU countries will be opened up to trade with the US at a zero tariff. He said he thinks the agreement is the biggest deal ever made. Von der Leyen said they reached a trade deal between the two largest economies in the world, and that it will bring stability and predictability.

Trump in Scotland, set to talk with EU, British leaders on tariffs

US President Donald Trump is staying at a golf resort in Scotland owned by his family's business. He is expected to hold talks with EU and British leaders on tariffs. Trump has been in Scotland since Friday. On Saturday, he was seen playing golf and driving his own golf cart, as local police maintained tight security in the area. Trump said he plans to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday to discuss what he calls "reciprocal tariffs." He has suggested that he would levy a 30-percent tariff on products coming from the European Union, starting on August 1. Trump is also due to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his stay. British media say the two will discuss reducing additional tariffs on UK-made steel products, a topic they have continued to negotiate, among other things. People in Scotland held rallies in several places to protest against Trump's political moves and other matters.
