Tottenham condemns racist abuse of Mathys Tel after UEFA Super Cup
The 20-year-old Tel, who is Black, was one of two Tottenham players who failed to convert their penalties as they lost the shootout 4-3 to PSG after a 2-2 draw.
'We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat,' Tottenham said in a statement.
'Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards — hiding behind anonymous user names and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.'
Tottenham said the club will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take 'the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify.'
'We stand with you, Mathys,' Spurs added.
Tel, who joined the team on a permanent basis from Bayern Munich in the offseason after a loan spell last season, came on as a substitute in the 79th minute when Tottenham was 2-0 ahead.
He hit his penalty wide of the goal in the shootout.

Create Account Vance Boelter now faces two charges of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder and charges of impersonating a police officer and animal cruelty for shooting one family's dog. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said the charges 'reflect the weight of Mr. Boelter's crimes.' But the state case continues to take a back seat to the federal case against Vance Boelter where he faces potentially more serious consequences. He was indicted July 15 on six federal counts of murder, stalking and firearms violations. The murder charges could carry the federal death penalty although prosecutors haven't decided yet whether to pursue that option. Boelter pleaded not guilty in federal court on Aug. 7. Moriarty had requested the state prosecution proceed first, but federal prosecutors are using their authority to press their case, according to Daniel Borgertpoepping, Hennepin County Attorney's Office's public information officer. 'When Boelter returns to state custody, we will be prepared to prosecute him — to hold him accountable to our community,' Moriarty said. 'We will do everything in our power to ensure that he is never able to hurt anyone again.' Shocking case of political violence The full extent of the political violence that officials said Boelter, 58, intended to inflict in the early hours of June 14 after months of planning alarmed the community. The Green Isle, Minnesota, resident was arrested a day later following a massive search involving local, state and federal authorities. 'The damage done to the victims — those with us, those who were taken from us and to our entire community — has opened wounds that will never heal,' Moriarty said in a statement. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office initially issued a warrant charging Boelter with two counts of second-degree murder for allegedly posing as a police officer and fatally shooting former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home. Boelter, authorities said, wore a uniform and a mask and yelled that he was police and told these lawmakers that he was an officer. Authorities originally charged Boelter with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, alleging he shot state Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife Yvette. But officials said when the charges were filed to secure the warrant that they would likely be updated to first-degree murder charges. Moriarty said the Hoffmans managed to push Boelter out of their home, shutting the door before the gunman fired nine times through the door, striking the senator nine times and his wife eight times. Both survived. Their adult daughter nearby was not hit. Other lawmakers targeted Federal prosecutors already revealed details of their investigation showing Boelter had driven to two other legislators' homes in the roughly hour-and-a-half timeline. Moriarity charged Boelter with trying to kill one of those lawmakers because he went to her door in the same way he approached the Hortmans' and Hoffmans' homes and tried to get inside. She said it doesn't matter that Rep Kristin Bahner wasn't home. Moriarty said Boelter rang Bahner's door for two full minutes while yelling it is the police and trying to open the door himself. Public defenders are typically assigned in Minnesota at a defendant's first appearance, which Boelter did not have before being taken into federal custody, Borgertpoepping said in a text message. Controversial prosecutor Moriarty announced last week that she would not seek reelection next year. Moriarty, a former public defender, was elected in 2022 as the Minneapolis area and the country were still reeling from the death of George Floyd, a Black man pinned under the knee of a white officer for 9 1/2 minutes. She promised to make police more accountable and change the culture of a prosecutors' office that she believed had long overemphasized punishment without addressing the root causes of crime. Moriarty faced controversy during her tenure because she said she wanted to move away from punishment as the purpose of prosecution and focusing on issues that lead people to engage in violence. The bright side for both players was plenty of room for real progress, which became a bit easier to envision this week during joint practices between the Patriots and Vikings. McCarthy stole the show on Thursday, producing perhaps his finest performance of training camp in terms of accuracy, decisiveness and head-turning completions during full-team drills, particularly in 11-on-11 red zone situations. 'There's going to be some throws where you've got to squeeze it in a window, some throws where he threw it up and over some guys and found some open grass with the ability to throw the football in different ways,' Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said. 'All things we've been working on, all things he's talented and capable of doing, but to do it in this setting should give him some confidence moving forward.' O'Connell has been stressing to McCarthy the importance of 'layering' his throws, depending on where the defenders are and what route his receivers are running, so that every pass doesn't leave his hand with the same velocity. The Vikings have raved at every turn about McCarthy's eagerness to learn and improve since he was first injured a year ago, and that has shown up in practices with the way he's thrown the ball at different angles and speeds to the right places. The 10th overall pick last year was particularly proud of the touch he had on a pass to Jordan Addison on Thursday in the back of the end zone. 'I think I'm one of the most accurate guys out there,' McCarthy said. 'Just being able to take it day by day and really hone in on every single throw.' Maye made strong throw after strong throw down the field on Wednesday against a Vikings defense well-known for causing confusion for opponents, but the production by the first-team Patriots offense on Thursday left more to be desired, with the pass rush spearheaded by Jonathan Greenard frequently causing problems for an offensive line that has plenty to prove this season. 'We've got to give him time, period,' center Garrett Bradbury said. 'As much time as he needs.' Learning to lead New Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has been leaning on Maye, the third overall pick last year, to become more demonstrative in huddles and meetings. 'It's not that it's lacking. I always want more. I think I have to as a coach,' Vrabel said. 'We always want to try take a player and meet them where they're at and then be able to improve on that.' Maye said he has been embracing the challenge. 'I want somebody to push me to do more for the team, have more of an impact with the guys around me,' Maye said. 'I feel like if I have that and if I feel like I'm not showing it myself, then I need somebody to push me along.' McCarthy has turned plenty of heads with the Vikings for his beyond-his-years leadership potential. 'He doesn't feel like a young guy,' tight end T.J. Hockenson said. 'The way he controls the huddle, his energy in the huddle, how he talks about the game and the mentality is high-level thinking.'
