Plans announced to propel aviation innovation in Norfolk
Alex Durand, chief executive of Saxon Air, said being able to unlock further growth and connectivity in clean innovation was a "once-in-a-generation opportunity". "The region has the airspace, innovators and aviation expertise to enable this, making it ideally placed to advance the latest clean aviation technologies," he said."The strategy we're announcing can give rural communities better connectivity, inclusively unlock new skills, and raise aspirations by showcasing innovation and opportunities."
Saxon Air handles 45,000 passengers each year - many of them offshore workers - and said it wanted to focus more on sustainable travel.Its headquarters at Norwich Airport has a roof with 470 solar panels to help power its electric plane. The company also has a drone platform, and John Dewing, director of operations, believed developing this technology would "future proof" the company and "push the boundaries" in green innovation.
SaxonAir hopes drones could be used to transport people around the county, cutting a journey from Norwich to King's Lynn from about 60 minutes to 15 minutes. "We fly helicopters so what's the next thing for a helicopter, a drone," Mr Dewing added. "We're trying to push the boundaries to tie up civil aviation with what is the private side, or the hobby side, to make it more of a viable project." However, Norfolk County Council said it wanted to see the government invest in the county and hoped it could become a "leader rather than a follower" in aviation innovation. Chris Starkie, the council's director of growth and investment, said: "[Norfolk] has the potential to be a leading centre, if not, the leading centre for research and development in new exciting aviation products."We are also branching out into areas like drone technology... I think we have the skills and the talent and the space, so it is the perfect combination."

Chelsea's latest swap deal offer to sign Xavi Simons in the summer transfer window has been rejected by RB Leipzig, according to reports. The Blues offered €40m (£34.5m) plus Christopher Nkunku for the 22-year-old Netherlands international – one of Enzo Maresca's top targets. While Leipzig view their former star Nkunku as an interesting player, they are not willing to consider bringing him back as part of a deal for Simons. German outlet BILD reports that Bundesliga side Leipzig rejected Chelsea's offer because Nkunku 'no longer fits into their salary structure'. It is also understood that Nkunku – said to be earning €20m (£17.2m) per year at Stamford Bridge – is not keen on a second stint at his old club. Chelsea are now set to go back to the drawing board as negotiations continue to bring Simons to west London before the window closes. Leipzig want €70m (£60.4m) for Simons, who has conjured up 21 goals and 23 assists across 76 games for the German club to date. Simons, who plays as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea – and a move seems likely as the new Premier League season looms. Manchester City have reportedly launched an attempt to hijack the deal but it's thought that Simons would prefer to join the Blues this summer. Chelsea have already signed a number of players this summer, including Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jorrel Hato, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez. Dutch coach Rene Meulensteen believes Simons would thrive at Chelsea if he becomes their latest signing. 'Xavi Simons is a great player to float around the No.10 position, or cut inside from the wing into the pockets,' he told Poker Strategy. 'He's a good dribbler, versatile and has cut his teeth with PSV and RB Leipzig, performing well in the Bundesliga. 'The Premier League is a step up, but you would expect playing for Chelsea or another top six side that the team would dominate most games they play – and that would suit Simons. Migrants told to join a trade union by taxpayer-funded app
Migrants have been told to join a trade union by an app funded with £2.4m from taxpayers. The app, developed by Norfolk county council and called International Recruitment Zone, tells workers that trade unions can offer 'training, experts, legal and other benefits'. It was funded as part of a £15m tranche handed to councils by the Department of Health and Social Care in 2023, with the aim of boosting the recruitment of foreign care workers. Another council used cash from the same pot to develop chatbots that can help answer migrants' questions, with names such as Housing Hollie and Unemployment Emma. Workers who access International Recruitment Zone are directed to a 'unions' page, with links to organisations they can join, including Unison, GMB, and Unite – all of which recently balloted members on industrial action and rejected an NHS pay award. The page is titled 'Why join a union?', and informs workers that 'a union can offer support both professional and personal throughout your career', adding: 'You can access education and training, experts, legal advice as well as other benefits.' In another case, Shropshire county council was given £1.8m to distribute across the West Midlands region. Some of the funding supported the creation of the West Midlands Social Care International Recruitment Hub, which helps employers in their search for overseas workers. The hub also provides online 'AI coaches' that use artificial intelligence to direct migrant workers to advice on access to health care, housing and financial help. The AI assistants include Housing Hollie, Community Carmen, and Unemployment Emma. Oxfordshire county council received £2.4m, and used £135,000 of the government grant to partner with a company called Borderless, which believes 'everyone should be able to move anywhere'. The company provides immigration services to 'streamline' recruitment of foreign staff by taking care of sponsorships, visa applications, and other elements of immigration paperwork for prospective employers. It also offers online advice to employers on recruiting staff on the 3571 visa for human resources experts. The Telegraph previously revealed that those entering the UK on 3571 visas can include diversity and inclusion managers, which the Labour Government has opted to protect as skilled worker roles. Leeds city council received £1.5m in total, and chose to hand it out in more than 300 bursaries of £3,000 to 'small and medium enterprises providing care and support, who would like to recruit from overseas to increase the capacity of their front-line workforce'. Overseas workers flocked to Britain after the Tory government in 2021 added care work to the Shortage Occupation List, stipulating a minimum salary requirement of £20,480 – just above the minimum wage at the time. The £15m was handed out in an attempt to help bring more people to the UK amid fears of a plunge in care workers that would put vulnerable people at risk. There was subsequently a surge in arrivals, with more than 460,000 health and care visas issued for workers and their dependants since 2023. The proliferation of care worker visas, and their dependants, led the Labour Government to announce a clampdown. On July 22, a ban on overseas applications for care work came into effect as part of a plan by Yvette Copper, the Home Secretary, to bring down immigration levels, which reached a record high of almost one million in 2023. However, regarding workers already in the country, the Government said: 'International workers who are already sponsored to work legally in the sector will be able to continue to extend their stay, change sponsors and apply to settle, including those who need to switch employers following a sponsor licence revocation.'

And Leipzig would not be able to match Nkunku's current wages at Stamford Bridge, which reports in Germany claim could be as high as £17million per year. The Frenchman's actual salary is believed to be considerably lower yet still beyond Leipzig's budget. Sporting director Marcel Schafer is under pressure to slash wage costs by 20 per cent as the Bundlesliga club adjust to the financial reality of not playing in European competition this season. And Leipzig are for now standing firm on their £60m valuation of Simons. Swap deals are now rare in football because of financial regulations and the way transfer payments are calculated for accounting purposes. But he is even further down the pecking order now following the arrivals of Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian, who represented former clubs Borussia Dortmund and Palmeiras respectively in the competition in the USA. And Chelsea still want to add Simons and Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho to Enzo Maresca's attacking options. Nkunku needs a fresh start and Chelsea want to sell him. But unless something significant changes, he will not be returning to Leipzig to grease the wheels of a deal for Simons. 4
