Time of Indiaa day ago
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said India has become the top supplier of smartphones to the United States, with electronics manufacturing now worth ₹12 lakh crore. Highlighting the government's vision, Vaishnaw, addressing the inauguration ceremony of Metro projects in Bengaluru today, said that India's electronic production has grown six times in the last 11 years. The Railway Minister further pointed out the exponential rise in electronic exports, which have increased eightfold to reach 3 lakh crore rupees. Vaishnaw also noted India's position as the world's second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, underscoring the country's expanding role in the global electronics market.
This growth reflects India's focus on becoming a global hub for technology production, making advanced electronics more widely available and supporting the Prime Minister's goal of inclusive access to technology for all citizens, Vaishnaw said.
"Our electronic production has grown 6 times in the last 11 years. Today, electronics manufacturing has touched 12 lakh crore rupees. Electronic exports have increased by 8 times... Today, it has grown to 3 lakh crore rupees. India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world" he said
According to official government data, India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing, becoming the world's 2nd largest mobile manufacturing country. In 2014, India had only 2 mobile manufacturing units, but fast forward to today, the nation boasts over 300 manufacturing units, underscoring a significant expansion in this vital sector.
In 2014-15 only 26% of the mobile phones which were being sold in India were made in India, the rest were being imported. It is worth mentioning that today, 99.2% of all mobile phones which are sold in India are made in India. The manufacturing value of mobile phones has surged from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to a staggering ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier today flagged off three
Vande Bharat
Trains - Ajni(Nagpur)-Pune Vande Bharat, KSR Bengaluru-Belgavi Vande Bharat and the Shree Mata Vaishnodevi Katra-Amritsar from KSR Bengaluru Railway station.
With these additions, the total number of Vande Bharat trains in the country will rise to 150 (75 pairs), Vaishnaw posted on X.

MP Tejasvi slams delays, ballooning costs of Bengaluru Metro's Pink Line

BENGALURU: A day after the launch of Namma Metro's Yellow Line, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya hit out at the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) over the delay and escalating costs of the Pink Line. Speaking to TNIE onboard a train on the Yellow Line on Monday, Surya said the elevated stretch from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere, earlier set for opening in September 2025, will now be ready only by March 2026. The underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagavara, originally targeted for opening on June 2026, is now slated for September 2026. Surya expressed frustration over BMRCL's repeated delays and ballooning costs, citing examples from previous phases. Phase 1's budget rose from Rs 6,300 crore in 2005 to Rs 14,000 crore, and Phase 2's from Rs 26,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 40,000 crore in 2024, he said, calling it an undue burden on taxpayers despite high demand for Metro connectivity. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on Sunday confirmed the new timelines and revealed that the proposed Phase 3A corridor (Red line) — 36.58 km from Sarjapur to Hebbal, costing Rs 28,405 crore — has had its Detailed Project Report (DPR) returned to the state for cost review under benchmarking guidelines. The ministry urged the state to expedite the process and prepare a long-term Metro master plan for Bengaluru. Surya also flagged the need to increase Metro train frequency, especially on the Yellow Line, with more train sets expected by year-end. He said, 'I spoke to the MD of Titagarh Rail Systems (the company which is manufacturing and supplying train sets) and he says that from October two trains will be available per month and by the end of August, the fourth train will also be added.'

Eknath Shinde Says Work On Thane Metro In ‘War-Footing Mode', Announces Launch Date

Last Updated: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that a trial run of the long-awaited Thane Metro is scheduled for next month Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that a trial run of the long-awaited Thane Metro is scheduled for next month, with full-scale operations expected to begin by December this year. Speaking to reporters after flagging off the Thane Varsha Marathon, Shinde said, 'Efforts are on to conduct the trial run of the Metro in Thane in September. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing." He added that preliminary work on Thane's internal Metro network has already started. 'This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities," he said, stressing that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will soon benefit from seamless Metro connectivity, enabling last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions. Outlining broader infrastructure initiatives, Shinde said the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane would help ease traffic congestion and redirect port-bound traffic to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) without entering the city. He said the district collector, municipal commissioner, and police commissioner have been tasked with making Thane traffic congestion-free. 'They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams," he asserted. Highlighting local development work, Shinde cited the rejuvenation of Jogila Lake, which had been encroached upon by about 250 huts. 'We have relocated the people who encroached the area and freed the lake. This is perhaps the first such project in the country where a lake has been completely restored and encroachments removed," he said. On the Thane Varsha Marathon, organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation and several sports bodies after a long break, Shinde said more than 25,000 people participated, showcasing the city's enthusiasm for public events. He also lauded wrestler-turned-politician and Shiv Sena leader Chandrahar Patil and his Kolhapur team for travelling to border areas in Jammu and Kashmir to donate blood for soldiers. 'Their effort reflects true love for the nation," Shinde remarked. view comments First Published: August 12, 2025, 07:49 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The Bengaluru-Belagavi VB Express was part of the three new VB trains flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bengaluru on Sunday. With the launch of this train, the number of VB services operating in Karnataka has risen to 11. The train will cover the 611 km distance from Bengaluru to Belagavi in 8 hours and 30 minutes, reducing current travel time by about an hour and 20 minutes and by about an hour and 40 minutes on the return leg compared to existing express trains. The service will be available six days a week, except Wednesday. The train will leave Bengaluru at 2.20 pm and reach Belagavi at 10.40 pm. On the return leg, it will depart Belagavi at 5.20 am and reach Bengaluru at 1.50 pm. It will stop at Dharwad, Hubballi, Haveri, Davangere, Tumakuru, and Yeshwantpur. Sharing details about the new service, railway officials said the VB Express has 530 chair car seats across eight coaches. A grand welcome was organised by South Western Railways (SWR), Hubballi division, at Belagavi station for the new VB train. Members of parliament Jagadish Shettar and Iranna Kadadi, MLA Vitthal Halagekar, former MP Mangala Angadi, former MLA Sanjay Patil, mayor Mangesh Pawar, Hubballi divisional railway additional manager T V Bhushan, and other senior railway officials were present at flower-decked station. A large crowd had gathered at Belagavi station almost two hours before the train arrived to catch a glimpse of it. As the train pulled in, chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai" rent the air, with some whistling, cheering and clapping in joy. Many pulled out their phones to capture selfies with the gleaming new VB rake. Local artists added a festive touch to the occasion, performing patriotic songs and folk dance. Shettar, the Belagavi MP, said 1,200 acres were acquired for the new Belagavi-Kittur-Dharwad railway line, and that compensation would be handed out soon to those whose land had been acquired for the project. Kadadi, the Rajya Sabha member, said the VB train's 5.30 am departure time from Belagavi needed to be revised in order to ensure greater passenger convenience, with the city serving as a link between three states -- Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa. SWR officials said the Bengaluru-Belagavi VB Express received a hearty welcome from the public at Yeshwantpur, Tumakuru, Davangere, Haveri, and Hubballi stations. **Photo** Name: VB Caption: The VB Express arrived in Belagavi late on Sunday night amid rousing reception.
