Miley Cyrus details family drama and relationship with dad Billy Ray: ‘We're so messy'
Miley Cyrus has opened up on her family's tumultuous decade, revealing how the Cyrus clan overcame deep rifts, without ever stepping foot in therapy.
During her appearance on the June 10 episode of Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, Miley, 32, shared her journey of healing and the importance of communication within her family.
'Half of us weren't speaking to each other at one point, and we cleaned all that up,' the singer told host Monica Lewinsky.
'That was a really important part of my year this year, was all of my family putting those lines of communication back together. A lot because of, you know, I had a lot of loyalty to my mum (Tish Cyrus), the way that families do when parents get divorced.'
Miley's family drama with her dad and mum reached a peak after Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus's divorce in 2022, following nearly three decades of marriage, which led to communication breaking down among her siblings as well.
Miley, now on good terms with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, reflected on the emotional toll of unresolved family conflict.
'In that situation,' she said, 'I watched what happens when you don't clean things up as they're happening. They really do stack, and then all of a sudden you go, 'Oh my God, it's been 10 years, and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start. This is like emotional hoarding.''
Miley revealed her unique approach to breaking the cycle of family drama: 'I just kind of bust through the pile that's stacked, and just go, 'I'm here. You're here. Let's start by having a good time together.' And then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other's life, then we'll just be in a better place to have these conversations. 'Cause I'd rather get it balanced first.'
When asked if the family ever sought counselling, Miley was forward: 'We're so messy we didn't even do any of that,' adding, 'to get each other in a room to even get to counselling would have been a war. So it was easier to just go, 'White flag'.'
Family tensions, especially with Billy Ray, have even inspired new music. 'I even wrote a song about it that's actually not on this album,' Miley shared.
'I'm working on another album, and that's a song that I'm working on called 'Secrets.' I wrote this song about my dad, because I wanted him to tell me even though there were secrets, even though I didn't really want to know. I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family.'
Miley emphasised her role as a safe space for her family: 'I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place, that I always had the white flag when they came to talk to me.'
She also offered insight into her parents' personalities and their divorce after nearly 30 years of marriage. 'Both of my parents are 'chronically polite,'' Miley explained, noting that Tish would 'stay in something that makes her uncomfortable for way too long, not wanting to hurt somebody, and at the end, it's just so excruciating for her.'
Billy Ray, she described as 'intelligent' and 'very intuitive,' traits that can be 'deceiving' or even 'manipulative,' but ultimately rooted in a poetic and caring nature.
Miley's appearance on the podcast follows recent public statements about family rumours and her close bond with her mother, despite social media hiccups.
'I rarely comment on rumours, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us.'
Miley wrote last month. 'She's my best friend. Like a lot of mums, she doesn't know how to work her phone and somehow un-followed me — simple, coincidental, and uninteresting.'
Addressing her relationship with her dad, Miley added, 'Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else. I'm at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing. Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.'

Miley Cyrus only wears 'very modest bathing suits'
Miley Cyrus only wears "very modest bathing suits". The 32-year-old pop star has admitted she's still haunted by memes which appeared online after her raunchy performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards back in 2013 and the crisis of confidence prompted her to change her look and tone down her swimwear choices - even when she's on private holidays. During an appearance on the 'Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky' podcast, she explained: "There was a couple [of memes] that were about my body in 2013. People were putting my head on different, very unattractive things. "I still see that when I put on a bathing suit to this day. I wear, you never would think, very modest bathing suits." Miley went on to recall a vacation with friends and one of her sisters, who teased her about her "grandma" swimwear. She said: "Everyone else had on a string bikini except me; I was in shorts. I don't even know if people wear tankinis anymore. I was wearing like a tank top ... "My sister goes: 'You're you, so this is cool. I guess this is in now. You're making this cool. But, like, you know this is what a grandma wears to the beach'." She added the comment made her reflect on her body image issues which she believes are linked to the trolling she suffered. Miley said: "It just hit me, like oh, I'm still so insecure about those memes about my body ... " During the podcast, Miley also admitted her raunchy image caused her relationships to "fall apart" because partners didn't like her sharing her "sexual expression" with the world. Miley - whose engagement to Liam Hemsworth ended in 2013 before they reconciled three years later - said: "I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally. "If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me because they didn't want to be with a woman [whose] sexual expression part was not for them. It was like shared with the world. "So, like, guys, when I would try to date, when I was dating, or who I was engaged to at the time, that didn't work out because I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only."

Trace Cyrus calls dad Billy Ray Cyrus the 'lamest man ever to walk planet earth'
Billy Ray Cyrus' son Trace Cyrus has called his dad the "lamest man ever to walk planet earth" in a scathing social media rant. The musician - who is the brother of pop star Miley Cyrus - blasted his father in a post on Instagram in which he claimed Billy Ray skipped the funeral of Trace's beloved grandmother Loretta Finley - known as Mammie - five years ago because he didn't want to fly to Los Angeles and Trace pointed out the Achy Breaky Heart singer had recently made a trip to Italy for a holiday with his girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley. In a post on Instagram, Trace wrote: "This man is so hungry for fame it's pathetic. He really flew to Italy for a fashion show but wouldn't come to LA for Mammie's funeral while he was still married to my mom. "Even after his daughter got him a $60k private jet like he demanded then he still didn't come even after the plane was paid for. "Honestly embarrassed to have ever considered you my idol. You're the lamest man ever to walk planet earth." He added: "The best thing to come from your downfall is it made me go into beast mode. I refuse to be a washed up, delusional, evil person when I'm old like you.' Christ is King. Get right with God. You need it." Trace is one of Billy Ray's six children with ex-wife Tish Cyrus, who he divorced in 2023. He went on to reply to comment from a fan, declaring he doesn't care if he ever speaks to his father again. The musician wrote: "I'm past the point of even caring if I ever speak to him again. I've surpassed him in every metric as a man on this planet. "There's nothing left to learn except from his mistake. I had hope at one point but I'm convinced he's finally a lost cause ... " It comes after Trace's pop star sister Miley opened up about healing the family rift, admitting she felt "a lot of loyalty" to mom Tish after her parents divorced leaving her relationship with Billy Ray in a "mess" - but she's been trying to fix things. Speaking to Monica Lewinsky on her Reclaiming podcast, she said: "What did you call your decade? Dark decade? Yeah, we had one of those. "Half of us [the family] weren't speaking to each other at one point and we cleaned all that up. ... "In that situation [when her parents divorced], I watched what happens when you don't clean things up as they're happening. "They really do stack, and then all of a sudden you go, 'Oh my god, it's been 10 years, and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start.' This is emotional hoarding." "And then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other's life, then we'll just be in a better place to have these conversations. 'Cause I'd rather get it balanced first." As a result, Miley spent a part of this year personally "putting those lines of communication back together." The Flowers hitmaker admitted it hadn't been easy because the whole family wasn't cut out for group therapy. She joked: 'We're so messy we didn't even do any of that. To get each other in a room to even get to counseling would have been a war. So, it was easier to just go, 'White flag.' "I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place that I always had the white flag when they came to talk to me."

Miley Cyrus explains how she repaired Billy Ray Cyrus rift
Miley Cyrus wanted to bring "happiness and joy" back to Billy Ray Cyrus' life before they sorted out their rift. The End of The World singer went through a "dark decade" when relationships within her family were fractured and it took some time to start repairing the bonds, particularly with her estranged dad. Speaking to Monica Lewinsky on her Reclaiming podcast, she said: "What did you call your decade? Dark decade? Yeah, we had one of those. 'Half of us weren't speaking to each other at one point and we cleaned all that up." Miley explained she felt "a lot of loyalty" to mom Tish after her parents divorced, leaving her relationship with the Achy Breaky Heart singer in a "mess". Elsewhere in the interview, Miley - who has siblings Brandi, 38, Trace, 36, Christopher, 33, Braison, 31, and 25-year-old Noah - admitted her siblings felt "humiliated" by her sexy public persona. Reflecting on 2013, when she caused controversy with her naked appearance in her 'Wrecking Ball' video and twerking on stage with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards, she said: "That was the time where I just got hit so hard and I was so embarrassed. "There was even a time where my brother and sister didn't want to go to school because of how humiliated they were to be related to me. "I remember my brother at one point he was saying, 'I don't judge you, but you could understand how hard it is for me to go to school, and you be my sister.' I was a hard sibling to have as a little girl, so I was like 'All right we're even.' "
