Time's Running Out: what you must know about the REAL ID deadline before flying
This story was originally published on MyNorthwest.com.
Your May travel plans could be in jeopardy if you don't have the proper ID to get on a plane. The REAL ID Act takes effect in about a month. Are you ready?
May 7 is the deadline for having identification that's recognized by the federal government. Without it, you won't be able to get on a plane or visit many federal buildings, like courthouses or military bases. A Washington driver's license is not acceptable because our state doesn't require proof of citizenship or other information; however, the state's enhanced driver's license is.
I had to wait about two weeks to get an appointment to get mine, and that was in January. Appointments now are running about two months out at many popular locations, which might leave you out of luck.
'It depends on the office location,' the Department of Licensing's Thomas Charlson said. 'We'd suggest looking at our appointments to see if there are any available in the area. I know at least with the Seattle area, appointments may be hard to come by.'
You can still walk-in to any location and wait, but that will likely take a while.
'If you're not seeing an appointment and you waited to the last minute, you can also still walk into one of our offices,' Charlson said. 'I'd suggest there, to also plan ahead. We do have estimated wait times on our website that give you an idea of how long it's going to be to get into the office.'
The best option could be standing outside the office as soon as it opens. Getting your name on that walk-in list early will likely save you several hours.
Only 26% of Washington drivers have an enhanced license, but Charlson said that number has been going up.
'In January, more than 36,000 people were trying to upgrade, and then in February, it was more than 32,000 people trying to upgrade to an enhanced driver's license,' he said. 'So we are, we are seeing an increase.'
This being said, if you have some other form of acceptable federal ID, there's no need to rush out and get an enhanced license.
'You don't have to get an enhanced driver's license if you don't want one,' Charlson said. 'You could still get a US passport, US military ID, tribal ID, Permanent Resident Card, and all of those options work.'
The Real ID Act was supposed to take effect years ago. It has been delayed and postponed for a decade as states and consumers have been slow to adopt it. The act was passed in 2005 as a way to make flying safer in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Your Costco ID is not valid for TSA entry
HONOLULU (KHON2) — If you've been thinking your Costco membership card is good enough for airport security, think again. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently made it clear that Costco cards will not be accepted as valid identification when you're flying. In a post on their official Facebook page, TSA shared: Hawaiʻi residents: Get your REAL ID before May 7 'We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person, but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not.' This statement comes after a lot of confusion from travelers, some of whom thought their Costco card, which has a gold star on it, would count as a REAL ID. Some of those who engaged with the TSA post even joked online, saying things like 'at least it has a STAR on it' or 'So, you're saying we should bring you a chicken?' But the truth is, a REAL ID is a special kind of ID that meets strict government standards. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005, and it has taken nearly 20 years for all states to issue these you want to fly domestically, you'll need either a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, a state-issued ID or another acceptable form of ID like a passport. You can get a REAL ID by visiting your state's driver's license office and providing documents like your full name, birth date, Social Security number, proof of address and legal status. You can click to learn more about state issued identification cards and for information on obtaining a Hawaii State driver's license. 11-year-old who has overcome 19 surgeries designs car of hope and healing for Chase Elliott
Chase Elliott will again have his No. 9 NAPA Chevrolet decorated by a child to bring attention to and help raise funds for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. This marks the ninth edition of the 'Desi9n to Drive' program through the Chase Elliott Foundation. 'Desi9n to Drive' has raised nearly half a million dollars for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Elliott will run the special scheme on his Hendrick Motorsports car at EchoPark Speedway, the track formerly known as Atlanta Motor Speedway. 'At first (the program) kind of started off with shoes and really NAPA's involvement kind of took it to the next level, honestly,' Elliott said. 'It's been rewarding, but I think more than anything it's had an impactful difference on people's lives.' Elliott's car and uniform for the June 28 race will feature a design created by 11-year-old Rhealynn Mills, chosen among submissions from patients at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's. She was diagnosed with Metastatic Osteosarcoma in October 2022. She had her right leg amputated, one of 19 surgeries she has undergone. The car Chase Elliott will drive June, 28, 2025 at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Ga. The car was designed by an 11-year-old as part of the 'Desi9n to Drive' program through the Chase Elliott Foundation that benefits Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Photo: Hendrick Motorsports Her design illustrates her desire to be a nurse and features symbols of hope and healing, including gold childhood cancer ribbons, stethoscopes, heart monitors and the words 'Cure Cancer' and 'healing kids like me' on the No. 9 car. 'For her to kind of exemplify and show the fight that she's gone through and that attitude that she's had throughout the process, I think, is really important,' Elliott said of Mills' design. 'Excited to have her and meet here and spend some time with her family, too. I've said this before, it's not just her, the whole family and what they go through and deal with through the process, it's a lot of weight on a lot of different people.' Elliott said that having such interactions are special to him. 'I say this a lot, if you can help make 1% of somebody's day a little better in that situation, I think it's worth the time,' he said. 'I think that's always a good reminder. We obviously have a lot going on, too, and everybody has their things in their own lives. I think there's a lot of lessons in all of that. 'I think one of the biggest ones I've taken is you just don't really know what someone is going through when you walk past them on the street. I think that's just a really important thing to remember. If people can take that away from some of this, you might see these people or family members or her and have no idea, right? 'Just showing them some respect and hopefully making their days better and giving them an experience they might not have, whether they're race fans or not, I think, is a good thing. We're just trying to help.' Race fans can enter the online sweepstakes fundraiser at to win part of Elliott's race-worn Atlanta uniform, or a VIP race day meet and greet experience with Elliott. The donations will benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's. The sweepstakes start June 12 and closes July 7.
