Time's Running Out: what you must know about the REAL ID deadline before flying
Your May travel plans could be in jeopardy if you don't have the proper ID to get on a plane. The REAL ID Act takes effect in about a month. Are you ready?
May 7 is the deadline for having identification that's recognized by the federal government. Without it, you won't be able to get on a plane or visit many federal buildings, like courthouses or military bases. A Washington driver's license is not acceptable because our state doesn't require proof of citizenship or other information; however, the state's enhanced driver's license is.
I had to wait about two weeks to get an appointment to get mine, and that was in January. Appointments now are running about two months out at many popular locations, which might leave you out of luck.
'It depends on the office location,' the Department of Licensing's Thomas Charlson said. 'We'd suggest looking at our appointments to see if there are any available in the area. I know at least with the Seattle area, appointments may be hard to come by.'
You can still walk-in to any location and wait, but that will likely take a while.
'If you're not seeing an appointment and you waited to the last minute, you can also still walk into one of our offices,' Charlson said. 'I'd suggest there, to also plan ahead. We do have estimated wait times on our website that give you an idea of how long it's going to be to get into the office.'
The best option could be standing outside the office as soon as it opens. Getting your name on that walk-in list early will likely save you several hours.
Only 26% of Washington drivers have an enhanced license, but Charlson said that number has been going up.
'In January, more than 36,000 people were trying to upgrade, and then in February, it was more than 32,000 people trying to upgrade to an enhanced driver's license,' he said. 'So we are, we are seeing an increase.'
This being said, if you have some other form of acceptable federal ID, there's no need to rush out and get an enhanced license.
'You don't have to get an enhanced driver's license if you don't want one,' Charlson said. 'You could still get a US passport, US military ID, tribal ID, Permanent Resident Card, and all of those options work.'
The Real ID Act was supposed to take effect years ago. It has been delayed and postponed for a decade as states and consumers have been slow to adopt it. The act was passed in 2005 as a way to make flying safer in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Washington's new hybrid-electric ferry out of service after motor failure
This story was originally posted to Washington's new converted hybrid-electric ferry, the Wenatchee, is out of service for the foreseeable future after a mechanical error caused the ferry to lose power. The ferry returned to service on July 24, but is now out of order at the Eagle Harbor maintenance facility near the Bainbridge Island ferry dock. WA's hybrid-electric ferry is out of service The problem with the ferry occurred at approximately 10 a.m. Friday, when the Wenatchee was near Seattle's Coleman Dock. Two of the four drive motors went offline unexpectedly, causing the ferry to lose power momentarily. The motors were back online a few minutes later, and crews sailed the ferry into a nearby maintenance facility. Engine crews, maintenance teams, and technicians at Eagle Harbor are currently working to determine the cause of the ferry's issue, a Washington State Ferries (WSF) spokesperson, Dana Warr, wrote via email to The Seattle Times. Ferry workers found the control system's communication wires were unstable, causing the motors to shut down. A generator powered by a diesel engine drives the motors, which power the propellers of the ferry. Once electric charging stations are built at terminals, this will change. Warr told The Seattle Times the issue has been difficult to find because it 'may only happen at certain speeds or in certain operating conditions,' but also noted these issues are a 'normal part of vessel commissioning.' The Wenatchee being pulled from service has not affected the overall sailing schedules with the rest of the fleet, according to ferry officials. The hybrid-electric ferry had been running the Seattle and Bainbridge Island route before its malfunction. The Walla Walla and the Tacoma ferries will continue to sail the Seattle and Bainbridge route in the meantime. 'When the review is complete, the issue is addressed, and we're confident it can be returned to safe service, we will do so,' Warr told The Seattle Times. 'Our teams are working hard to resolve the issue so we can perform sea trials, which when successful will allow the vessel to return to service.' The 22-month-long conversion of the Wenatchee cost $133 million, making the ferry the largest hybrid-electric ferry in North America. Follow Jason Sutich on X. Send news tips here. Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific unveils deal to buy 14 Boeing jets
Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific said Wednesday it would place a US$8.1-billion order for 14 Boeing jets, its first order with the American aircraft maker for 12 years. The airline has "exercised the purchase rights... to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft; and... secured the right to acquire up to seven additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft", it said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. The new order expects the aircraft to be delivered by 2034, according to a separate filing. Cathay Pacific made the announcement as it reported its attributable profit rose slightly to HK$3.65 billion (US$4.65 million), benefiting from a pick-up in travel demand in Asia. Chair Patrick Healy heralded a "solid financial performance" in the filing. The company's passenger airlines, including Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express, have launched or announced 19 new destinations so far in 2025, with "more to come", he said. Cathay now flies to more than 100 passenger destinations globally, he added. However, the company warned that its lowcost airlines are facing short-term challenges as pick-up in bookings is "yet to return to normal levels". twa/reb/dan Sign in to access your portfolio
