PM Modi commissions Vizhinjam International Seaport, calls it gateway to India's maritime future
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday officially commissioned the Vizhinjam International Seaport, here, which was completed at an estimated cost of Rs 8,867 crore.
The PM arrived at the port area by helicopter from Thiruvananthapuram city at 10.15 am and walked around the transshipment hub wearing a hard hat, taking stock of the facilities here.
Subsequently, at 11.33 am, he formally commissioned the first phase of the facility in the presence of Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and Thiruvananthapuram Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
Located in Thiruvananthapuram district, the port is expected to transform India's role in international trade and shipping.
The deep-water port has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India's largest port developer and part of the Adani Group, under a public-private partnership.
Following a successful trial run, the port received its commercial commissioning certificate on December 4 last year.

He should wake up (from ignorance), otherwise, he will keep talking such things which are devoid of facts," he told reporters, according to PTI. The post begins with the techie saying that he joined the company as a fresher in 2022 on a CTC of Rs 8.5 lakh. 'From day one, the environment felt toxic and manipulative — you could clearly sense the unhealthy hierarchy and how everyone in tech was focused on pleasing a particular senior person rather than doing meaningful work," he said. In the 2024 appraisal cycle, the employee listed his achievements. He said that most of the management appreciated his work, but 'that one influential person didn't". The user said that this was because he was not one of those trying to please that person constantly. The employee resigned in April 2024, but was retained with the promise of being given a 55% hike one year later, that is in April 2025. This was only a verbal agreement with no written record. During the 2025 appraisal cycle, he got only a 37% hike instead of 55% as promised. However, this was not the reason for his resignation. The user explains the backdrop by stating that he got engaged in December 2024, married in February 2025, and lost his father in April 2025. During the appraisal, he had a one-on-one meeting with his team lead, who said, 'You should have resigned around your wedding, do you even realize how much your marriage delayed the work? Because of your father's situation and the leave you took, my timeline commitment couldn't be fulfilled." This stunned the techie. 'That was the final straw for me. I looked at him and said very calmly, 'Please watch what you're saying and think before you speak. Choose your next words carefully,'" he said. Dubey urged the Congress leader to read the 1975 judgement of the Allahabad High Court to know how his grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi "fixed" and "stole" the 1971 Lok Sabha elections to win from the Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh. "Rahul Baba, how is the election fixed or stolen? Read the exploits of your grandmother, Indira Gandhi, which is the judgment of the Allahabad High Court," Dubey said in a post on X.
