Conference final loss still cuts deep for Saskatoon Hilltops entering 2025 season
Fast forward 10 months later after that devastating loss, it's a feeling that's motivating the two-time conference all-star heading into the 2025 season.
'To an extent it's good to have that taste in your mouth just to remember how it felt,' said Stevens. 'It's just figuring out what we did wrong and also expanding on the things that we did right.'
The Hilltops are ready to kick off their 2025 Canadian Junior Football League season on Sunday, hitting the road to battle the Winnipeg Rifles.
Saskatoon's defence will be led by Stevens once again, entering a brand new season as a key member of the Hilltops defensive line and being named a second-team All-Canadian at his position.

That dominance last season caught the attention of the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders, who invited Stevens and Hilltops teammate Dalton Urban to the team's rookie and main training camps in May.
That stint at Griffiths Stadium on the University of Saskatchewan campus included several memorable moments, including a one-on-one matchup with Grey Cup champion and four-time CFL all-star Micah Johnson which became the focal point of practice.
'He's strong,' said Stevens. 'He's strong and he knows some tips there. I know for a fact when we went against each other he was probably licking his lips like, 'Oh I know I'm going to beat him.' Ultimately he did, but I still got something out of it even though I lost.'
Stevens was able to parlay that experience towards joining the Roughriders' practice squad, competing on the field nearly every day at Mosaic Stadium over the past two months.

It's an experience he said was a highlight of his football career, with lessons he's aiming to share with his teammates back on the Hilltops.
'I was blessed to have that opportunity,' said Stevens. 'It's only right that I try to at least share that with lots of my teammates, if I ever can.'
Tom Sargeant has watched the Eatonia product develop into one of the top defensive linemen in western Canada, a fact which the Roughriders have also identified in their conversations with the Hilltops head coach.

'Talking to the brass down in 'Riderville' he took full advantage of it,' said Sargeant. 'He's a great kid, a character guy, he shows up every day and just works hard. He's brought the same mentality back here. He's working hard, he's a playmaker and he just makes us better. He's educating and working with some of the younger players, providing that valuable experience.'
While Stevens will help provide a veteran presence on the Saskatoon defence this season, it will be a much younger Hilltops team taking the field compared to their 2024 roster with nine graduates leaving the program.

The most notable of which being Hilltops quarterback and PFC most valuable player Trey Reider, who threw for 1,685 yards and 17 touchdowns in eight regular season games and won a national championship with the organization in 2023.
Reider's departure from the team has opened the door for backup quarterback Brexton Elias to take over behind centre after four seasons waiting for his opportunity to earn a starter's role.

'We're excited for his opportunity because he's been very patient,' said Sargeant. 'He's waited and he's deserving of this chance, so now he's got to take advantage of it. In the blue and gold we're measured by wins and losses, it ain't more simple than that.'
Game-planning for a new quarterback leading the offence, Sargeant added the coaching staff has developed new play calls for Elias which allow him to use his legs and put defences on their heels.
'He can run it at any time,' said Sargeant. 'We've given the green light that we're going to run some option, we're just going to change it up and get him moving a little differently. Trey was more of a gunslinger, he'd rip that ball all over the place.
'Brexton is just [playing] a different style of game.'
Suffering their first loss in almost two years last October to the Thunder in the PFC final, the Hilltops have seen their streak of 21 consecutive victories come to an end.
Unable to stop the run against Regina in the championship game, that has been a key part of training camp for the 'Toppers' according to Sargeant.
'I want to have the most physical team that blocks the best and tackles the best,' said Sargeant. 'If we do those things, then we should be able to run the ball real well and we should be able to stop the run. So that's the whole focus this year.'

The Hilltops will have plenty of work ahead towards getting back on track and claiming a 24th national title, however the memories of that game are dictating the lessons learned in defeat for the Hilltops.
They're lessons which Stevens said will be displayed starting in their Week 1 contest against the Rifles.
'It's just about growing,' said Stevens. 'It's all we can do coming into this next season. Hopefully looking forward to another good year, but hopefully and ultimately completing the mission.'
The Hilltops will kick off their 2025 CJFL season at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Winnipeg, before returning to SMF Field for their home opener on Aug. 17 against the Edmonton Huskies.

Blue and Gold miss golden opportunity in Calgary heartbreaker
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers' heartbreaking 28-27 road loss to the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium on Saturday went beyond the standings. At 4-4, the Blue and Gold are in the thick of the CFL's West Division playoff race as the page flips to the second half of the season, but it's fair to wonder how a victory against one of the league's top teams might've helped turn the tide for a club that had played an uninspiring brand of football for weeks. In that sense, the Bombers whiffed on a golden opportunity. (Jeff McIntosh / The Canadian Press files) Winnipeg was set up to pull off the upset after Sergio Castillo connected on a CFL record-tying 63-yard field goal to give the visitors a late lead. However, Calgary only needed four plays to get into range for René Paredes, who drilled a 40-yard boot with zeroes on the clock to complete a dramatic victory for the Stamps, who improved to 6-3. Calgary has won all three regular-season meetings against the Bombers for the first time since 2016, while Winnipeg has now dropped four of its last five. 'We just got to find a way to make one or two of those little plays,' said Willie Jefferson. 'It's gonna sting for the night… but once we start watching film on the next team, we can't dwell on the past. We gotta keep moving forward. We gotta try to stack some wins together, and just keep moving.' Indeed, there's no time to dwell. The Bombers must reset for a home date against the Ottawa Redblacks (3-6) at Princess Auto Stadium on Thursday (7:30 p.m.). Before we turn to Week 11, let's wrap up Week 10 with the latest edition of Five Takeaways. There's an old adage in football: players over plays. It means that rather than trying to find the perfect play for a particular situation, offensive play callers are best advised to dial up something to get the ball in the hands of their most impactful players. The Bombers' offence is at its best when Brady Oliveira is touching the ball frequently. Winnipeg tied a season-high with 23 points in the first half. The offence ran 31 plays in the opening two quarters — Oliveira touched the ball 15 times and amassed 146 total scrimmage yards on those opportunities, as Zach Collaros looked his way eight times in the passing game, including on a beautiful 42-yard connection up the left hash, while Winnipeg racked up 241 yards of net offence. In the second half, Oliveira nearly disappeared from the game plan, and so did the Bombers' offence. The bell cow running back touched the ball just six times after halftime — five rushes, one reception — while Winnipeg mustered a dismal 62 yards of net offence and punted on five of their six possessions. First-year offensive co-ordinator Jason Hogan has been scrutinized about his usage — or lack thereof — of Oliveira this season, and that doesn't look to change after the offence squandered a solid performance by the Bombers' defence. Part of the outcry over Oliveira's usage is that the Bombers have lacked consistent production from the receiving corps, beyond hometown product Nic Demski. Oliveira (nine catches for 100 yards) was Winnipeg's leading receiver on this night, but that wasn't by design. Collaros rarely had a throw he completed in rhythm, as he was forced to hold onto the ball and dance in the pocket while waiting for one of his pass-catchers to uncover. (Jeff McIntosh / The Canadian Press files) Behind Oliveira in receiving were Kevens Clercius, three catches for 32 yards; Demski, three grabs for 28 yards; Jerreth Sterns, three receptions for 27 yards; Dillon Mitchell, three catches for 22 yards; and Keric Wheatfall, one catch for seven yards. The offence's biggest play of the game came on a 23-yard strike from Collaros to Sterns, who waltzed into the end zone untouched in the first quarter. The absence of star receiver Dalton Schoen, whose return remains unknown, looms large for this group. Collaros needs at least two pass catchers he can count on, regardless of the situation. If the Bombers and Stamps are to meet again in the playoffs, rest assured, there will be a concerted effort to stop Jaylon Hutchings. (Jeff McIntosh / The Canadian Press files) The Stampeders' 25-year-old defensive tackle was a problem for the interior of the Bombers' offensive line. Hutchings continued his breakout season, registering a pair of sacks and pressuring Collaros on three occasions. He now has six sacks to go with 24 defensive tackles this season. The 6 foot, 304-pounder also made several important plays in the run game, and even sniffed out a screen pass in the third quarter, hauling Oliveira to the ground to end the Bombers' drive. The third phase of the game continues to be special for the Blue and Gold. Sergio Castillo was nails again on this night, connecting from 49, 53 and 37 yards before his record-tying kick. Castillo is 21-of-23 on the year, and his three makes of 50-plus yards are tied for second most in the league, while his average attempt of 39.2 yards is the most of any kicker. The kicking battery has been solid with rookie Ian Leroux snapping and Jamieson Sheahan holding. Meanwhile, Trey Vaval continues to provide a spark in the return game. His 449 punt-return yards were the most of any player entering Week 10, and he averaged 15.8 yards per attempt against Calgary. Believe it or not, the first half was the easy part of the Bombers' schedule this season. The Stampeders on the road were just the beginning, and now the Bombers head into the teeth of their campaign. Then the Riders visit to complete the annual home-and-home between the Prairie rivals before the Bombers go back on the road to face the East Division-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Clubs are judged based on their performances against the best teams in the league. The Bombers missed an opportunity against Calgary on Saturday, but they will have plenty more chances coming up. Cease, Padres' bullpen too much for Boston as the Padres beat the Red Sox 6-2
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Dylan Cease was impressive for six innings before San Diego's All-Star-laden bullpen got into and out of trouble in the seventh and the Padres beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 on Sunday to take two of three. The Padres have won 11 of 14 games as they continue to chase the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Cease (5-10) cruised into the seventh with a shutout on just three singles and a walk before walking Jarren Duran and allowing a single to Trevor Story. All-Star Jason Adam came on and hit Masataka Yoshida with his first pitch to load the bases and then two runs scored when shortstop Xander Bogaerts committed a fielder error on a potential double-play grounder by Romy Gonzalez. Wilyer Abreu singled to load the bases again before Adam struck out Ceddanne Rafaela and pinch-hitter Abraham Toro. All-Star Adrian Morejon came on and struck out rookie Roman Anthony to end the inning. Cease allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out seven and walking two. San Diego scored its first five runs with two outs, with starter Brayan Bello (8-6) on the hook for all five.
