72% families approve cadaver donations, says data from Civil hospital
On Friday, the hospital recorded 202nd donation.
Rakesh Joshi, medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, said that through the donations, about 645 lives were saved. "We recorded the first donation in Dec 2020. Ever since, we recorded 282 brain dead cases. Out of the total, we were able to convince 202 (72%) families to donate the patient's organs before the last rites," Dr Joshi said.
The road, however, was not smooth. Officials said that the initial phase was marked by fighting misinformation about the procedure and fear of disfigurement. "After nearly five years, now the relatives know what organ donation is and why it is important. We want to thank every family for their decision that has given a new lease of life to individuals waiting for organs for years," he said.

Paddy dwarfing virus detected in Punjab.
Ludhiana: While the Punjab government has pushed for advanced transplantation of paddy this year, it appears to have led to surfacing of paddy dwarfing disease in transplanted crop earlier, as per field observations by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Paddy dwarfing disease, caused by Southern Rice Black Streaked Dwarf Virus (SRBSDV), has surfaced in Punjab, with confirmed cases in multiple districts and growing concern among farmers. Surveys by PAU across 20 districts in July and August this year have found the disease in sub-mountainous areas, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Ropar, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala. Field observations showed that transplanting before June 20 increased infection risk. Fields transplanted after June 25 largely escaped early infection, showing little to no symptoms during the survey. The government this year had advanced the paddy transplanting date from usual mid June to June 1. The disease is marked by stunting, reduced tillering, poor root growth, narrow upright leaves and shortened internodes. It spreads through the WBPH, an insect vector favoured by specific weather conditions. Experts say this year's outbreak mirrors the climate pattern of 2022, when the last major flare-up occurred. To contain the spread, PAU has issued insect-vector management guidelines. Farmers are advised to monitor WBPH populations closely and use only the recommended insecticides. Ulterior financial motives driving opposition to SC order on stray dogs, allege city advocates
Nagpur: The opposition to the Supreme Court's recent order directing the removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR streets and their relocation to shelters may be driven by vested financial interests, alleged some members of Nagpur's legal fraternity. They say certain non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and commercial stakeholders linked to dog sterilisation and vaccine supply may have much to lose if the SC ruling is implemented in full. Senior advocate Firdos Mirza said he had raised the issue while pleading another case at Nagpur Bench of Bombay high court. "I said it in the court that there seems to be some vested interest of NGOs for putting stray dogs before the safety of human beings. Any species, as a natural instinct, prioritises protecting its own. So, humans will always rush to first save a human if he or she is in danger. If this natural instinct is not being adhered to, it means there must be some big incentive to do so," Mirza said. Mirza pointed out that under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, approximately Rs850 is given as funds per dog for sterilisation. "I heard about a civic official who was suspended after allegations that he had his own NGO which was implementing the ABC programme. With approximately 1.5 lakh street dogs in Nagpur, you can calculate the financial incentive when multiplied by Rs850 per canine," he said. Advocate Wilson Matthew added that the scale of the rabies vaccine market also raises questions about ulterior financial motives. "Around 3,000 dog-bite cases are recorded in Nagpur every year. Each vial of anti-rabies vaccine costs around Rs350, with a complete course requiring five doses. Govt hospitals often report shortages, while private facilities seem to have adequate stock. Nationwide, lakhs of dog-bite cases and 18,000-20,000 rabies deaths are reported annually, sustaining India's Rs5,000 crore vaccine industry. Given this scale, some believe opposition to controlling stray dog numbers could indirectly serve the commercial interests of vaccine manufacturers," he said.
