Moorthy rallies cadres ahead of DMK general council meeting
Madurai: Minister for commercial taxes and registration, P Moorthy, on Friday urged DMK party cadres and functionaries to ensure the general council meeting on June 1 and the chief minister's grand roadshow on May 31 are a grand success with party discipline.
Addressing a consultative meeting at Uthangudi in Madurai, Moorthy said the June 1 gathering, to be held at Kalaignar Thidal in Madurai, would be a turning point in DMK's political journey. "This event is not just for Madurai — it will reflect the strength of our party across Tamil Nadu. The roadshow and council meeting must showcase our unity and readiness for the elections ahead," he said.
Senior leaders, including information technology minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR), Madurai district secretaries G Thalapathi and M Manimaran, participated in the strategy session.
Moorthy emphasised that every district-level and union-level office bearer with general council status should participate, reaffirming that the event will be strictly protocol-driven.
The minister added that chief minister M K Stalin will inaugurate a statue of former Madurai mayor Muthu during his roadshow, starting from Perungudi and culminating at Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal via major DMK strongholds — a gesture that reinforces the party's historical roots in the city.

PTR, in his address, said the decision to host the general council outside Chennai — for the first time in party history — reflected CM Stalin's confidence in Madurai's organisational strength. "This will be one of the most unforgettable events in DMK history," he said, praising Moorthy's leadership and calling the upcoming event "a political milestone" for southern Tamil Nadu.

AIADMK a weed, should be eradicated: CM Stalin at agri expo
ERODE/TIRUPPUR: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday came down heavily on the AIADMK accusing it of betraying the farmers in all ways and alleging that farmers had to fight for everything under its rule. 'However, that situation has now changed under the DMK regime,' the CM said. He was speaking after inaugurating a three-day agricultural exhibition and conference organised by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department at Vijayamangalam in Erode district. 'Farmer suicides increased during the last AIADMK regime. When farmers protested in Delhi against the now-repealed three contentious central farm laws (2020-21), the AIADMK supported those laws without any shame. That's why farmers defeated that party. Weeds like AIADMK should be completely eradicated from the country,' Stalin said. 'Many more schemes for farmers are going to come under the Dravidian model government, which will come to power again in Tamil Nadu. And for that, all the farmers should support this government. We are not fake farmers who deceive people. We are the first to support farmers in times of trouble,' the CM added. Stalin said he was delighted to meet the farmers of the western region through this event before the release of water from Mettur Dam on Thursday for Cauvery Delta irrigation.

Securing more seats is as important as defeating AIADMK-BJP combine: CPM
CHENNAI: Hinting at the party's resolve to seek more seats in the DMK alliance in the 2026 Assembly election, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam on Wednesday said securing more seats for the party is as important as fighting the communal AIADMK-BJP alliance in the Assembly election. Launching the CPM's state-wide 'People's Meeting Campaign' on Wednesday, Shanmugam said, 'Under the current political circumstances, the DMK-led alliance remains the most viable platform to counter this communal threat.' Reiterating the need to electorally defeat the AIAMDK-BJP combine, the CPM leader, however, said the party's foremost political objective in Tamil Nadu will be to defeat the BJP alliance. 'But we also aim to contest and win more seats in the upcoming elections to strengthen the party's presence in the state Assembly,' Shanmugam said. He acknowledged that all alliance partners naturally seek more seats and expressed confidence that the DMK leadership would make reasonable decisions during negotiations.
