'Saving of 6 years': Beggar in Karnataka donates Rs 1.8 lakh for temple renovation; villagers find cash stashed in gunny bags

RAICHUR: A 60-year-old beggar from Bijanagera village, along the Raichur-Jambaladinni Road, donated ₹1.83 lakh for the renovation of the local Anjaneyaswamy temple. The funds were accumulated entirely from the alms she collected over the last six years. The temple was recently dedicated to the public, and Rangamma was felicitated of her contribution. Rangamma, originally from Andhra Pradesh, has been residing in Bijanagera for the last 35 years. She has been sustaining herself entirely through begging. Villagers find cash stashed in gunny bags For the past six years, she meticulously stacked up all the alms she collected in three gunny bags. A few weeks ago, villagers, who have been supporting her with food and clothing, built a modest 4x5 ft tinroof shelter for her. The Rs 1 lakh needed to build the shelter was funded by Rangamma, using part of the money she had collected from begging. However, when she moved to her new dwelling, the villagers discovered the three cash-stashed gunny bags. Upon questioning, Rangamma said she intended to donate all that money to the temple. Thereafter, she called some of the village elders to count the contents of the bags. More than 20 villagers toiled for nearly six hours before coming up with the final figure: Rs 1.83 lakh. In addition, Rs 6,000 worth of currency notes were damaged due to dampness. 'According to Rangamma's wish, we have used that money for renovation of the temple,' said Basavaraj Yadav, secretary of Anjaneyaswamy temple service committee. Rangamma primarily begs from bikers, auto drivers and other motorists. She said: 'Drivers, shop owners and small traders give me Rs 10, Rs 20, and sometimes Rs 100. The money I contributed to the temple was all collected in this way.' Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
