Time of India4 days ago
The
Maharashtra ATS
will decide the future course of action after analysing the
Bombay High Court
verdict which acquitted all 12 accused in the 7/11 Mumbai train bomb blasts case and consulting the
special public prosecutor
.
Nineteen years after seven train blasts here killed more than 180 persons, the High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 accused, saying the prosecution utterly failed to prove the case and it was "hard to believe the accused committed the crime".

The HC judgement comes as a major embarrassment to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which probed the case. The agency had claimed that the accused were members of the banned outfit
Students' Islamic Movement of India
(SIMI) and had hatched the conspiracy with Pakistani members of terror group
Lashkar-e-Taiba
(LeT).
The ATS stated that the special
MCOCA court
on September 30, 2015, handed
capital punishment
to five accused and
life imprisonment
to seven others, while acquitting another in the July 11, 2006, serial train blasts case.
The ATS said ASG Raja Thakare and Special Public Prosecutor Chimalkar argued for the state in the HC over appeals on the confirmation of the death penalty and life sentence.
Live Events
The matter was heard between July 2024 and January 27, 2025, when the prosecution and defence completed their respective arguments.
The high court rejected the death reference of the five accused and acquitted the seven convicted accused by accepting their appeal and cancelled the order of the MCOCA court, the ATS statement said.
Accordingly, the ATS will consult the special public prosecutor and analyse the High Court's judgement before deciding the next action.

No change in Kerala government's decision to increase school timings: Minister Sivankutty

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government's decision to increase school timings by half an hour in the high schools will remain unchanged, General Education Minister V Sivankutty clarified on July 25. The Minister who held a meeting with representatives of various aided management associations, said the majority of them supported the decision to increase school timings by 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon. "However, if any groups still have issues with the revised timings, it can be discussed in the next academic year," Sivankutty told reporters. He was referring to the opposition of the Muslim organisation Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama towards the reform as it affects madrassa education of students belonging to the community. During the meeting, Samastha representatives proposed an increase in school timing by half an hour in the afternoon session only. However, the government turned down the suggestion. The government responded that the revised academic calendar has already been introduced in schools based on directions of the High Court and further changes to it in this year was not possible.

Kerala high court upholds 2019 govt order on ban of single use plastic in state

Kochi: High court has upheld the 2019 orders issued by the state govt imposing a complete ban on the manufacture, storage, transport and sale of single-use plastic items in the state and clarified that the state is duty-bound to implement the ban. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Justice Viju Abraham delivered the judgment while dismissing a batch of petitions filed by the Kerala Plastic Manufacturers Association (North Zone), the Malayalee Non-Woven Bag Manufacturing Association and others, challenging the impugned govt orders. The petitioners primarily contested two orders issued by the environment department –– one that imposed a complete ban on single-use plastics and another that clarified the earlier order in response to concerns raised by industry associations. The order dated Nov 27, 2019, imposed a total ban on the manufacture, storage, transportation and sale of single-use plastic items, effective from Jan 1, 2020. The banned items included plastic carry bags irrespective of thickness, plastic sheets (such as table spreads), cling film, single-use plastic utensils like cups, plates, dishes, spoons, forks, straws, stirrers, plastic-coated items such as paper cups, plates, bowls, carry bags, non-woven bags, plastic flags, plastic packets, PET/PETE bottles with capacities less than 300ml, PVC flex materials, etc. Subsequently, in response to concerns raised by industry associations, the state govt issued a clarification on Dec 17, 2019, excluding cling film and certain types of plastic packets from the ban. The petitioners challenged both orders, questioning the state govt's competence to issue them in the absence of corresponding rules framed by the central govt. In response, the state govt submitted that the orders were issued by invoking powers under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 — a power already upheld by the Supreme Court in 2023. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The central pollution control board also informed HC that relevant rules had, in fact, been framed through notifications issued in 2021 and 2022. Accordingly, HC dismissed the petitions challenging the govt orders. While some petitioners also contested the fines imposed on them for the illegal manufacture and storage of single-use plastic items, the court left open the question of such claims to be raised in appropriate proceedings.

Kishan Reddy slams Telangana caste survey, backs Centre's census for ‘real justice' to BCs

The proposed caste census to be taken up by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre will be as per the Constitution to provide 'real justice' to the Backward Classes (BC) unlike the 'useless' caste socio-economic survey taken up by the Congress government in Telangana which seeks to 'cheat' them by including Muslims in the BCc quota, said Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Friday. 'Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy should explain how the BCs can benefit when his government survey has reduced the numbers to 46% of the population and cutting down the quota benefit further by seeking to include 10% Muslims who will anyway get benefit from the 10% EWS — economically weaker sections quota,' he told a press conference in New Delhi. The High Court had struck down the 4% quota for Muslims when they were included in BC-E category by the then Congress government led by Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy but it is being implemented with the existing stay order in the Supreme Court. The current government intends to increase the same to 10% depriving the BCs of their rights as their quota gets reduced to 32%, he maintained. Mr. Kishan Reddy's contention is that 10% quota to Muslims benefits the Majlis Party and Congress leaders more. In this context, he referred to the GHMC elections where most of the BC reserved divisions were bagged by the Majlis Party in the last elections. The BJP leader said it was unbecoming of the Chief Minister to speak sarcastically about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's caste as 'converted caste' and has pointed out that inclusion of castes into SC/ST/BC has been a continuous process. Mr. Modi's caste was included by the then Congress governments based on the Mandal Commission report. The Congress has never made a BC as either PM or CM in its history plus did not bother to take up caste census or provide quota to BCs when in power. The Minister said the Congress government should follow the High Court order and conduct the local body polls within September and also implement the promised 42% quota for BCs even while 'genuine' BCs get the benefit.
